I personally am a fan of naps. If not on vaca, I take them on Sundays.

I am lucky that I can take cat naps, 30-45 minutes, and I can still get to sleep at night.

I find this particularly useful when visiting with family since they seem to want to get up early and go go go all day.

It seems to take the "edge" off.

I don't find them helpful - I usually wake up more tired than before and then have trouble going to sleep at night.

Lay aside life-harming heaviness and entertain a cheerful disposition.

I'm one that can't nap even for 20 min. If I did I would never fall asleep at bed time. Even without napping it takes me at least 2 hours to fall asleep. So no napping for me!

I only nap when I didn't sleep much the previous night. My naps are usually anywhere between 2 to 4 hours. I know that's bad but once I fall asleep, I will stay asleep. I just can't keep my naps to 20 minutes, I just can't!!

I think naps could be healthy if someone is very overtired & needs one.
But, if you're falling asleep often during the day - could be health issues, like sleep apnea or heart problems.

I don't understand how people take 10 or 20 minute naps...it takes me HOURS to fall asleep in the first place. How do you get to sleep and get back up so quickly?

I think they are healthy if they are really naps and not staying in bed most of the day. I don't set out, ever, to take a nap, but they happen totally unplanned. I will sit down to read and before I know it an hour has passed and I have napped most of that time. I just feel that it is my body getting what it needs.

Yes, especially for those of us with autoimmune or other chronic health conditions. Our energy stores are limited; naps are a way of recharging.

Yes, it gives your body a chance to reboot. Studys show a quick cat nap is very beneficial.

I'm blessed to be able to take a short (about 30 minutes) nap almost everyday. It makes my afternoon go much smoother with more energy. Even with the nap, I have no trouble getting my 8 hours of sleep a night sometimes 9.

I don't think I would use the word unhealthy in regards to napping. I think it depends on the person and their situation if a nap will have more positive or negative effects.

If you have ongoing sleep problems, napping may not help things improve.

I think there are times when it's necessary. I've had a few operations over the last 4 years and after each one I needed to nap every afternoon for a month or so. It's part of the healing. I may need to nap this afternoon because. for some bizarre reason I'm wide awake at 4.15 am so came downstairs for a drink. But napping isn't normal for me. It's a sign that something isn't quite right.

Having said that, I'm mostly retired, generally get my 8 hours sleep so I shouldn't need to nap in normal circumstances.

I would always lay down with my kids at nap time until the fell asleep. I would doze off a little and I had so much more energy on the days I got my little nap in.

I think if you need a short nap you should take one.For most people a 20 minute nap is an opportunity to distress and recharge.

If it disrupts your sleep then don't nap.
I nap if I didn't sleep well or if I have a headache (along with a big glass of water and a couple of aspirin).
I used to nap during my lunch break when I worked nights as it was the only way to survive.

Good sleep hygiene (according to some physicians I know at least) means getting up each morning at the same time and going to bed at night at the same time each day. They also believe that naps are bad.
That being said, I try not to nap during the day because I know that it will disrupt my night's sleep. Sometimes naps are necessary though. If medications cause drowsiness, or a bad night's sleep is causing issues, by all means take a nap. However, I would probably try not to make a habit of it (unless that is your habit and it doesn't disrupt your regular sleeping patterns).

Try a glass of water; maybe you're really dehydrated. If you truly need a rest, a short 15 min nap may rejuvenate you, but not if it robs you of a good night's sleep or done out of boredom.

Depends on the person. If it doesnt disrupt your evening sleep.

Personally whether I nap or not, my night sleep is not effected

depends on the person

for me, naps are great. I can take a 10 minute power nap at lunch time and be good for the rest of the day.

I tried the 'only sleep at night, no matter what' route and it didn't work for me. I rarely sleep more than 6 hours a night. Many times it's only 4 or 5. After a couple of weeks of those 4 hour nights, if I don't grab a nap when I can I'm in a daze.

I think naps are healthy when your body tells you it is tired or aches then I take a nap. Each person is different, some may not need a nap... most days I don't but the days I do heavy cleaning or a lot of errands etc. my body says stop rest me.

My dad used to come home from work, recline in his chair and take 20 power naps. It revitalized him. Now I can't do that, I end up sleeping for a couple of hours. So I do not nap.

No, they are not. Napping is very bad sleep hygiene.

I have a sleep disorder and am absolutely not allowed to nap. I've taken a nap maybe once in the last 3 years.

Yes I think naps are a great way to recharge your batteries yet you have to keep them around 30 minutes. I call those short naps or "snaps". I have read where some US companies provide nap rooms for their employees over the lunch hour to take some downtime to recharge their batteries with short naps like a siesta.
