No. So tired of Greedy Corporations forcing employees to work extended Hours giving up Their Holiday with family and friend in order for a few dollars per hr while the Corporation profits hugely.

Absolutely not. I am a very frugal girl, and I love a deal. However, time with my family is much more precious to me than anything materialistic, and a need to possess more STUFF. Christmas shouldn't be centered around gifts and Thanksgiving shouldn't be about shopping.

I don't shop at all that Friday so no way will I shop on Thanksgiving Day. And what the heck have we as a nation come to when Thanksgiving Day is now being referred to as 'Black Thursday' or 'Black Thanksgiving'? I find that thoroughly dismaying.

I shop at local stores for my needs and I purchase Christmas and birthday presents year round so I make a real effort to stay out of big box stores and malls from now until after the new year.

I went shopping on Black Friday once. That was enough. No one on my list needs something that could only be purchased on Black Friday so what is the point. I do like the post where people go out and walk the malls just to watch people. That actually sounds like fun, and a great way to get your walking in!

I would rather have a root canal than go out in those crowds. There is nothing I want so badly that it is worth it to fight the traffic and the rude people fighting for the discount TV.

I can't stand the thought of fighting large, unruly crowds on Black Friday, Thanksgiving or any other day just to save some money on Christmas presents. Plus, there's no guarantee the item you want will still be on the shelf by the time you get to it. I plan on doing almost all of my Christmas shopping online; you don't have to leave the house, you can compare prices and you can do it whatever time of day or night you want. emoticon

At the rate retail stores are going, soon Black Friday will be held in October!

A colleague of mine recently talked about how her and her mother go to the local mall and stroll around with coffee and watch the madness go on, she said they do their holiday shopping year round so they never are in a bind by this time.

I have NEVER shopped on "Black Friday". I don't want a deal so bad, that I'm willing to fight the crowds. Those people get crazy out there and I feel a lot safer shopping from my computer. But even if deals are offered on Thanksgiving, I will never shop on that day (not even online). That's my day with my family, shopping can wait!!!!

ETHELMERZ -- those were the days! Now -- like others have said, it's GREED. Our holidays have come from meaning something to families, to seeing which big box stores can make more than the others, and we hear about it on the news like it's something we are waiting to hear about!. I won't feed into that either, especially since particular big-box stores won't even pay a decent living to their employees or even offer them healthcare. Only a very few at the top of these places aren't suffering through our economy. They are just waiting to see what their bonuses will be after the holiday rush.

After witnessing this retailer/consumer practice for a few decades now, I feel it becomes more debasing, more disgusting with each passing year. It's an abomination, a massive spectacle of greed. This year both the retailers & the consumers can't start this madness soon enough and will begin it on Thanksgiving day - a major holiday for focus on our families, thanks and gratitude for all of our blessings. Once, about 15 years ago I did shop on Black Friday - but will not be a party to it ever again.

Back in the late 1960's, we girls that worked at the same place and had Friday off, would drive up to San Francisco, dressed up, hats and gloves, and go shopping, see the huge lit Christmas trees in some of the large department stores, have a nice luncheon and late dinner, and it was great, fun and pleasant. After the 1970's, they called that Friday "Black" and the fun was gone, pushing and shoving, pain in the butt, so never went again, no matter where I live or how "good" the sales are. Not worth it!! I don't feel bad about it, either.

Plan for tomorrow, but enjoy the heck out of today.

I used to love black Friday, but now that they are opening on Thanksgiving it has ruined it for me. I am not going shopping either day. I feel like they have rolled Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years into one holiday. It is disheartening. emoticon

Black Friday epitomizes everything that I despise about US culture. Materialism, consumerism, lack of manners, selfishness, greed, being in a rush, not caring about the environment, etc. All that stress and worry for television sets from China and ugly mass-produced jewelry.

I don't participate.

If I give gifts at all, they are generally small and hand made. I am an artist, so I am able to create things for my friends and family that are personalized and meaningful.

I shopped on Black Friday once, and it was the last time I did it. I don't relish frenzied shopping/retail madness one bit. I think it's reprehensible that more and more stores are opening on Thanksgiving. Retail people (my dad worked in retail for years) get so little time off between Thanksgiving and Christmas, so wouldn't it be nice to actually let them have the holiday off? I refuse to do any shopping at stores that open on Thanksgiving.

My sister usually wants me to go with her, and she's the type to get pushed around, so I usually cave and go. All of my shopping except two items, one small and one I'll be buying online. I have zero incentive to go and hope to talk her out of it.

I am not going to go shopping on Thanksgiving Day. I think that is just crazy.

It is so sad that people are not going to be with their families for the sake of the almighty dollar

Friday is different. I love going Christmas shopping the day after Thanksgiving. I go with my dad and he loves it, he won't be around forever. Something about working retail many years and not having the luxury

the retailers are so afraid that they lose a week this year since Thanksgiving is so late. But the same amount of money is spent whether people have an extra week or not. One of the stores i worked at clocked it. One year the holiday was a week earlier and the next year the holiday was a week later. the store made basically the same amount of money.

Black Friday was never a day I went out unless I had to work. I shop a lot as it is and on BF, the other shoppers are taking my parking place and making the experience deplorable.

I will shop on Saturday though since it is small business saturday. I would rather support our little mom and pop shops than the large conglomerates.

actually i have found that the deals that you get during the rest of the season are better than those on BF.

As far as shopping on thanksgiving-- never in a million years.

I think the Thanksgiving shopping thing is RIDICULOUS. Honestly, it makes me so angry, and I feel so bad for the people who are stuck working on a holiday like that.

I have only shopped on Black Friday once, and it's not something I intend to do again. I really hate big crowds. Our family now goes on a kind of retreat the week of Thanksgiving, so we're not close to any stores anyway. Even the internet is sketchy out there. LOL. Somehow I've managed to get my gifts in spite of it . . .

Speaking as another person who worked many years in retail NO WAY, NO HOW am I shopping on Thanksgiving day. Not because it's going to be crowded, but because it's not fair to the people who are going to be stuck working that day. Why do we have to start shopping on Thanksgiving ? Or why do stores have to open at midnight or 4am for sales ? There is nothing I want that bad to get up that early for. Nope. I will wait til a respectable hour of the day to shop on Black Friday.

And yes, I do shop on Black Friday because I have gotten some really terrific deals, but I don't start shopping til around 9-10am. My body does need some time to digest all that turkey ! LOL !!!

Nah, I usually prefer to do my shopping from the comfort of my computer chair.

I've gone shopping on Black Friday before, but only once was it for something WE HAD TO HAVE (hubby wanted an HDTV and BJ's had them on sale.) I've gone with my in-laws and it's a lot of fun to people watch, but I don't feel like I'm going to miss out on a sale.

I am upset at the stores opening on Thanksgiving...Kmart is opening at 6am, and Walmart is opening at 6pm. My daughter works at Target and she may have to go into work on Thanksgiving evening.

One stumble does not a failure make.

Everything in moderation.

I like art and craft fairs like the Harvest festivals. I pick up "gifts" all year long that are different, and one of a kind for people I know I will be giving birthday gifts, Hanukkah, Xmas and also hostess gifts. I avoid malls at all costs during the holidays. I do like after Xmas sales for cute holiday gift bags and cards at 50% off.

I worked retail in my teenage years and early 20's. Honestly, some years it would have been nice to have to go to work to get out of the house. I would volunteer to work on Thanksgiving and Christmas at the nursing home in my 30's.
As far as shopping on Black Friday, I went out with my neighbor several years ago.. the guys stayed home and babysat all the kids. It was interesting to say the least. I did most of our shopping online last year over thanksgiving weekend. Though, my son wanted to know what it was like, so we took him to Target at midnight. He thought the people were hilarious.

I used to work retail and NEVER SHOP ON BLACK FRIDAY! It's not worth the crowds and the insanity. I have scaled back my holiday shopping now that my kids are grown anyway. They each get one special gift that I usually buy online, and then I choose more sane times to hit the stores for smaller gifts, books and stocking stuffers.

I have zero stress about holiday shopping.

Huge family person and anything that intrudes on family time gets vetoed by me. Black Friday is fine for those who care, but Thursday is family day!

I also am a huge internet shopper yet the deals aren't the same here in Canada for stores such as Target, Walmart, Best Buy, Future Shop etc. I wish they were but alas not for us Canuks!

I'm a big-time internet shopper as well -- much easier, except I think the UPS guy gets tired of me during the holidays.

MOM2ACAT -- I am so sorry to hear of your diagnosis. I can see why you would want to make things much easier, and I admire that you are surging forward with holiday plans. My best wishes and prayers are with you.

I'm not a big shopper on any day of the year most especially on black Friday. I've already gotten my Christmas shopping done unless I see something extra cute during my regular foray. I always make sure to shop during the week and don't even like the weekend crowds at the grocery store. I feel sorry for those who have to work on the holidays.

I use to work in retail, and I only had to work during the early morning hours on that day a couple of times; that's a day that requires a lot patience, but I managed to keep a smile on my face while helping customers the best I could. Most of the years I worked in retail, I worked 2nd shift that day, coming in at 2 or 3pm; there was usually a big mess to clean up, (I worked in the clothing department my last few years) but by that time of the day, the store was fairly quiet.

I had to quit working in 2008 because of health problems related to incurable cancer. Since then, I have stayed home on that day. I do not shopping among big crowds. I do most of my shopping online because it's easier for me with my health issues, it's hard for me to be on my feet for long periods of time because of the bone pain from my cancer.

My name is Shari; I have been a Sparker since July 2006, and living with Stage IV breast cancer since 2007.

People think they are going to get a fantasy deal on the item of their dreams. Some people go crazy pushing and shoving...acting like animals. I don't do stores for the holidays...I prefer getting my bargains online.

I agree with that - the employees have families too and shouldn't have to be stuck in a store all day with crazy customers when they could be spending time with their families.

Just another example of over-commercialization of retail.... and I'm from Canada, our Thanksgiving was last month, but there's tons of Canadians who cross the border to shop in the US especially for Black Friday... many book hotels to stay for a couple of days so they can bring back more goods duty-free as a result. It's been going on for years.

I myself do not participate in that. I don't have many people to shop for, so there's no point in driving an hour to the border then going shopping... just doesn't make sense for me.

I have never shopped on Black Friday. I don't think the deals are that great and the crowds are not something I want to deal with. I think that the stores should be ashamed for trying to turn Thanksgiving into a shopping day. It's not necessary for them to be open like that. I think it's greedy and it certainly isn't considerate of their employees. Their employees should be able to spend that day with their families. People who go out to shop on Thanksgiving...should be home with their families IMO.

Many stores are having Black Friday on Thanksgiving now. Are the ads and media making you anxious about this? Will you go shopping on Thanksgiving? Do you feel like you will miss the best deals if you don't go on Thanksgiving?

For me -- I never shop on Thanksgiving nor on Black Friday. The thought of the frenzy makes my skin crawl. I hate having to dodge the people walking in the other direction and the baby carriages. I also don't like malls anymore because of the occasional crazies that wreak havoc in them. Also, mall prices always seem to be such good deals until you see the overload of goods selling for 1/2 the pre-holiday price in January.

I do have one thing that I like to do on Black Friday -- one of the mega stores gives out free cookbooks on that day, so I usually show up when they open to claim mine. Then it's home to relaxation.

Your thoughts or take on Black Friday or now Black Thanksgiving?
