Maybe you need to make exercise an everyday habit. Only exercising 3-4 days a week seems like too much downtime. It is too easy to get distracted when it isn't something that you do automatically.
I only do very intense exercise 3-4 days a week, but other days I do things that are lower impact, like swimming a mile, going out to dance or going for a long walk. One rest day a week is fine, especially if you are tired or not feeling well--but taking half the week is too much in my criteria.
