I drive THROUGH Newark. I never go TO Newark. I'm afraid of Newark. I've heard they have great food there, but I'm terrified of it.

I know Pomegranates are in season. Not quite $0.99 at the grocery stores here yet ($1.67 is the lowest I've seen), but we do buy them in the box at Costco when they're there.

I'll have to check Trader Joe's and Whole Foods for purple potatoes. Thanks for the suggestion. I do have an Aldi nearby as well, so that could also be a good place to check out. Who knows? I might find some other good things there. I wanted to get parmesan and/or feta cheese for a one-pot pasta dish, and they seem to have good deals. I have been wanting to do an Aldi run lately.

I did get yucca once. I am pretty adventurous when it comes to trying produce. I'll try pretty much anything at least once- maybe even twice (except papaya. I got one once and it tasted like dirty feet).

I don't necessarily think it was an incentive to eat potatoes. Her kids love purple potatoes as it is (her older daughter loves purple in general). She is a food/lunch blogger, so she likes doing the fun bento lunches for her kids- food picks stuck in things, cookie cutters to cut sandwiches into fun shapes, etc. It was more of her way of making an old favorite new. This lunch happened to be a halloween themed lunch, so she had coffin-shaped sandwiches (on gluten free bread) and vampire potatoes (among other things).

I grew my own purple potatoes this summer. I often see them at Trader Joe's/Aldi and at health food stores. Sometimes my discount grocery store has them too in small mesh bags.

I guess what I don't understand is why anyone would need any ADDED incentive to eat potatoes. They are tasty and loaded with carbs just baked on their own! I've never had a problem getting kids to eat potatoes, even sans smiley faces.

Pomegranates are 99 cents right now...big, juicy, and in season!

Lissa, are you in New Jersey? You should be able to find fabulous Latin American produce (and ethnic foods) in the larger cities. I have had amazing Peruvian and Colombian food in Newark. There are TONS of people from the Andes in your state, so I bet that there are purple potatoes somewhere...and probably oca too, as well as malanga and yuca.

I grew up eating Zebra cakes, but I actually haven't eaten one since August (maybe September).

I would rather have a pomegranate. Unfortunately, a single pomegranate is often MORE expensive than a box of Little Debbie snack cakes.

I'm not anti-smiley potato though. I know someone (through Instagram) who doesn't eat the Smiley potatoes because of some of the ingredients (they have dye, gluten, and dairy sensitivities in the family). She made mashed purple potatoes (I've never seen a purple potato around here which bums me out immensely), and shaped them into smiley faces before baking. There's nothing wrong with that. It's a fun way of serving potatoes. (Hers were actual vampires for Halloween).

I'd do something like that for my own meals! Why not?

Lissa, it is pretty clear that you and I just live in ENTIRELY different worlds! I did google smiley potatoes...cute but kind of creepy. I've never seen a zebra cake...anywhere, ever. If I am going to have cake, it will be gourmet/homemade and not Little Debbie. Not that I have ever tried anything made by Little Debbie...but that sort of thing just looks flat and tasteless to me. I would rather have a pomegranate, or a pitaya...or even an apple!

Smiley potatoes are these french fry/tater tot things that are in the shape of a smiley face.

I do find it surprising that someone can go through life never hearing of a Zebra cake. They are EVERYWHERE. I can't avoid them!

I do shop at the farmer's market and the Asian market, and I STILL haven't heard of a lot of those things. My farmer's market has yardlong beans, but they just call them "long string beans." I'm sure I've seen more of these things- just not called by their actual name.

Ethnic markets have lots of interesting things. I shop at a Mexican grocery store as a matter of course and I often see several of these vegetables--pepinos and nopales for example. Asian grocery stores are great too--unfortunately the closest large one is an hour away from me. I also like to go to fruit stores, which are generally run by people from other countries, at least in my area.

I've seen things like romanesco and fiddleheads at organic groceries and farmers markets.

We are even Lissa--I had never heard of smiley potatoes (still not sure what those are) or Zebra cakes until you mentioned them. I've eaten a lot of chirimoya, but have never had a pop tart in my entire life. emoticon

I just tried a new fruit this weekend--quince. It is kind of like a cross between an apple and a pear. They are hard as a rock--you can't eat them fresh, they must be baked.

Very delicious--they are like the most delicious pear you can possibly imagine. The fruit smell great too--I left them on my kitchen counter for a week just because they smelled nice.

My grandmother used to talk about these all the time--I guess it is something that used to be more common that has fallen out of fashion.

I may see if I can get some more of these to make jelly or jam.

Yes, the variety of fruits in the world is absolutely astonishing. Many of my favorites from South America are not on this list, but they aren't available in the US either.

I found this quiz on a message board that I am a part of--most of the people who took it there scored something like 5-10...it really is quite difficult!

My score was so low I wont even say it. But it was fun and educating. I'm one of those people that will try just about anything. Wish there would be a tasting somewhere of exotic fruits and veggies. Its amazing to me what's common in one area is unknown in others.

Romanesco tastes more like cauliflower than broccoli. It's pretty good. An organic farmer that sells at my local farmers market grows it.

I got 23. I would have gotten a few others if they'd had the names in different languages, but I also just guessed randomly at others, so 22/23 is probably fair. My favorite was the Romanesco-- I've admired it in the fancy grocery but never bought it because of the price. One of my friends got seeds a while back, but they arrived too late to plant that spring and I never heard if she tried it in the fall or this spring. Even if it didn't taste good, it's just such a beautiful thing to picture growing in your garden!
