In those lucky cases, yes, I suppose it would be a short conversation :D.

But when different viewpoints are present and there is a high probability of it turning into a shouting match as the gravy boat gets passed around, well, you just hope a cooler head manages to change the topic before gravy ends up in a nice paste with the cranberry on the walls.

I would imagine that talking about politics when everyone at the table is of the same mind then it's probably a very short conversation.

Money is one of those things that shouldn't come up at Thanksgiving dinner either...but it does anyway. My family (grandparent especially) breaks *all* of those rules but what are you going to do at that point? emoticon

Here are Aristotle's thoughts on why people keep posting political threads.

"Hence it is evident that the state is a creation of nature, and that man is by nature a political animal."

Mark Twain said,"It is by the goodness of god that in our country we have those 3 unspeakably precious things: freedom of speech, freedom of conscience, and the prudence never to practice either of them."

My personal opinion on why people keep posting political threads is that they are "gluttons for punishment".

I agree about religion, politics and the great pumpkin. Nothing good ever comes out of discussing them.

I saw the thread about the government shut down. It was slanted in one direction, but then if someone came in with an opposing view. It would have quickly ended up in Spark Jail.

Are they?

I can't recall any political threads, other than the one about the government shutdown. I never clicked on that one--problem solved!

Excerpt from Wkipedia:
The Great Pumpkin was first mentioned by Linus in Peanuts in 1959, but the premise was reworked by Schulz many times throughout the run of the strip, and also inspired the 1966 animated television special It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown and had a brief mention in You're Not Elected, Charlie Brown. The best-known quote regarding Linus and the Great Pumpkin, originally from the comic strip but made famous by the TV special, is: "There are three things I have learned never to discuss with people: religion, politics, and the Great Pumpkin."[1]

Why do people post them in the Cafe? Probably just because they don't know they're not supposed to. Not everybody reads the community guidelines before jumping in...

I'm quite happy to NOT see them in the Cafe.

Yes I've seem some political threads go to cyber jail very fast. I was really interested in the one about the Affordable Care Act. I wanted to know people's opinions on it. We all do have to have health insurance so why not talk about it. I didn't think it was that political a topic. The older I get the more interested in politics I become.

a colleague of mine just recently said that he thinks about each issue individually and even though he's a registered republican he is unable to agree 100% with everything his party does. I was glad to hear him say that. It's always been friendly between he & I when discussing politics.

Depends on the type of people who you want to discuss politics with. If it's just people who are going to blindly quote sound bites without any real reason or reasoning, then that's no fun, IMO. It's just going to cause each side to dig deeper into their own positions and most likely will end in a shouting match/broken friendship/etc.

*If* you can find someone who has reasons behind what they're saying and can defend those reasons then that can be a lot of fun because you're getting exposure to a different way of thinking which may help you explore your own positions further and do the same for them as well. This group makes a very low percentage of my total circle of acquaintances so politics discussions don't happen that often.

Take a look at census data for the past 30 years or so. People have increasingly been choosing where they live based on political preferences so, unless something changes, we're just going to have echo chambers instead of interesting discussions.

I learned a while ago that political threads never stay long here in the cafe' which in my opinion now is A-Okay with me.

There are, however, political teams for people to discuss politics. The problem I see is that those teams attract their own kind with no opposition so where's the fun in that? LOL!
