Kricket, I'd never heard of that as a field, but it actually sounds fascinating! And I bet there are great employment prospects in both public and private sectors. How cool!

I am back at school, working on my Masters in Infrastructure Protection and International Security. It is challenging and keeps my brain going and sometimes gets in the way of workouts, but I am doing it and enjoying it.

I would get my doctorate in working with kids with autism or I would get a degree in speech/language.

I would love to be a full time student now ! But, nope, have to work for a living. lol.

If I had the opportunity, I would go back to get another degree. In what ? not sure. For pure joy, I'd major in art. If I wanted to change career, I'd major in biology so that I could work in the biotech industry.

I have 2 Degrees, one in The Liberal Arts and one in Pharmacy. However, I think if I could go back I would go for Accounting~

I would not do one thing differently. I took my first college class just a couple months before my 30th birthday. I had three young kids at the time, and this was before the days of "online" education.

I earned my BS in 1994 and became a teacher. I earned my Masters in 2001 and then a couple of years after that I got started teaching college, online. In 2010, I earned a Ph.D. at age 51. I don't want any more degrees. I love to learn but money does matter.

I started back three years ago and have one more year left to get my Bachelors in Accounting with a minor in Human Resources. Hopefully the degree with help over-ride my medical issues to get me a new job and away from the one I have now.
Other than that, the education is stimulating.

I'm a perpetual student, return to college for various reasons every 5-10 years on average, but not sure I'm ever going to do it again.

If I do, I have a hankering to become a registered dietician.

Mary - come over here and work in the NHS. Our nurses are not well paid, but they are respected and universally loved. Many taxi drivers offer free rides to nurses, and there are other perks too.

If I returned to study now, I think it would be Maths or Physics

Wow, MaryJ, so sad to hear your perspective. We had a terminally ill daughter and absolutely loved her nurses at Boston Children's hospital, where we spent 5 years basically living in the room with her. The nursing and support staff were the way we all survived and they were marvelous. We still send them cards and gifts even though our daughter has passed on. They just had an event for parent who are missing their kids on Sunday.

I am considering taking some additional classes in Project Management, because I end up managing projects and would like a more structured way to track activity, costs and schedules. A lot of engineering firms have project managers, but it would be good to have a deeper understanding on the client side. It would make me better at my current job. Which I like and hope I can continue doing it.

MaryJ-- why say "if I were younger?" If you were younger, you wouldn't have the experience and the empathy to be good at it. If you went now, you would still have 6-8 years of practice before you were even eligible to retire, and 20+ years if you loved it and decided you didn't want to retire. Think of how many people you could help in 8 years.

That's the way I think of further education-- it doesn't matter if you're old-ish; you're still probably going to spend more time in the field than the average "traditional age" college student will. It's pretty rare nowadays for anyone to work a whole lifetime in one job. With age comes wisdom, about the world and most importantly, about yourself. People who go back to school when they're older are often far better students than the "kids," because

a) they know what they want and why they want it
b) their time is more valuable so they spend it wisely, and they also value their instructors' time
c) they don't have to learn how to be a grown-up human being at the same time they're learning calculus. They already know about showing up on time, not spending the weekend drinking themselves into a stupor, and how to deal with their best friend getting mad at them. They can focus on answering "What is the sine of X?" because they're not sitting there with half their mind occupied by "Do you think he likes me? Is my hair cute? Should I get a tattoo or would that make people think I'm slutty? Why did Brynna and Mariela go to the mall without me?"

If I had the money, I think I would go back to school for a degree in geology, because it's something I really want to learn. I avoided the sciences in college because I had let people convince me that I wasn't as good at science as I was at humanities. Now I'm old enough to say, "Yeah, that's true. But so what? Just because I'm better at A, that doesn't mean I can't be really good at B." And having credentials in science would let me take almost any position that opens up in either of my two current careers. I would do it out of intellectual curiosity (and because I like pretty rocks), but it would have practical, monetary value as well.

I don't intend to retire until I'm physically incapable of working, and I figure I've got at least 30 years, maybe as much as 40. That's definitely worth 4 years of study. Unfortunately, I have to do a lot better in the income department for a few years before I can afford the tuition and time off.

I did get the opportunity and I did go back to school. I graduated with an associates degree in nursing at age 49, took my state boards at 50, got a bachelor's in nursing at 53. Now I get to work crappy hours, work holidays, work every other weekend, not get a break, not get a lunch. What I did not realize is if you have 6 patients (sometimes I have more) that are in the hospital it allows 10 minutes per hour with each and they are seriously ill. Patients and family members complain if their RN takes a break. For some reason they believe we do nothing. I did this because I knew my position as a medical transcription was being outsourced and I did not want a sit down job again. Now I am counting the years until I can retire and sit down and I am only 55 with 10 more years of this. If I was younger I would go to law school and be a legal advocate for nurses - because everyone wants to blame the nurse.

So, if someone paid my bills and tuition, I would be a forever student. I would love to study art and music and philosophy.
