I think we hear most about the ones who cross over the line.
It's unfortunate that they get surrounded by people experienced in manipulation, who don't really have the players best interest in mind...it's about the Game not the player. And sometimes publicity...good or bad...gets even more money into the sport.

Play with a person's ego long enough and they will believe they are above it all.

Who really can be used as a good role model from the world of entertainment or sports? There are some types who shouldn't be looked up to certainly. I always recall Charles Barkley saying to parents that sports figures shouldn't be looked to as role models and I totally agree. There are some really great athletes in various sports who could be considered role models though!

I think role models should be from your own family or community though. I've heard some say they want to be their own model~

"If a person wants to be a part of your life, they will make an obvious effort to do so. Think twice before reserving a space in your heart for people who do not make an effort to stay."

"Your happiness is up to you. Whatever happened in your life to make you who you are up until this point is irrelevant. It is your responsibility now to take control and change your life to be what you want it to be. Energy and persistence conquer all things. Make time, not excuses."

I don't think of athletes as role models, they are playing a game for really big money so it makes sense for them to be careful in what they do and say. Good role modeling comes from the heart, some players have it, some don't.

Athletes and celebrities are just people and so a few of them might be "good role models." But I think most celebrities are horrible role models, yet people look to them as if they are Gods with all the answers to everything.

AS Ladycjm said:

"I have never considered any celebrity a role model. The fact that they are able to carry a football or a tune does not mean that they are a good person."

It also does not mean they are highly intelligent, talented, or knowledgeable about anything except their area of fame (sport or music, acting, etc.) Yet movie stars, etc., seem to have a lot of political clout and are always offering their latest health book, diet plan, exercise video, line of fashion or designer perfume, or whatever. As if more reputable experts are not available with better products and advice than these people have to offer. All I can say is my role models are real people in my life and I know them in some way other than seeing them on TV or playing a sport.

I think some athletes are role models... my daughter really likes Jason Brown (figure skater), and Yuna Kim (figure skater) - both are generous kind people with a solid work ethic.

I tend more to have my daughter cheer the local hockey team vs an individual player- not for the game - but for all of the good the organization does for the community.

I cannot like football or encourage my kids to have anything to do with the sport.

I think that, as a general rule, celebrities are not good role models for children. Better role models, who live realistic, normal, lives can be found closer to home--parents, older siblings, grandparents, teachers, coaches, the nice family down the street that's caring for their elderly parents, etc.

Just as in any walk of life there are role models. Some players work with disabled children, celebrities work for the wounded soldiers. The acts that people do make them role models not the games they play. Some how we have gotten that turned around. I hate to say it but it is the parents job to get that turned back around.

I hope my child learns that everyone is an individual with strengths and weaknesses. I've tried to instill in him my personal belief that everyone has value.

Therefore, while I think it's okay for him to admire the talents of others, I hope he will strive to just be a good person, a hard worker, someone who treats people well. I don't really want him to look to any particular person to model since we all have our own issues.

I hope he remembers and values the same things I do and learns that celebrities and athletes are just people, the same as the man/woman behind the counter at the local grocery store.

you can ask the same question with Actors and actresses in mind. They are in the public eye. Kids look up to them. I never did.

I am sure some of them are good. I am sure many of them are friends across the table, just not on the field.

It's sort of a catch 22; these guys should not be role models just because they are very good at a game, but on the other hand, many pros realize they are now in a position to have a positive influence and will try to be role models. When you have guys like JJ Watt out there, too many people want or expect the rest of the players to be like that.

I don't have kids, but if I did I would like to think I would try to make known the difference between being a fan of someone's performance and looking up to an athlete as an idol.

They shouldn't be role models, but they are. I am sure there are good guys in the NFL. They are not all thugs.

Thing about idols is that they have clay feet. Think of all the parents that thought Miley Cyrus was the best thing since sliced bread.

I cannot understand the hero worship some people feel for athletes and movie stars.
I think there are many better role models...I don't follow American sport, but having ball sense does not make someone a person people should look up to.

They are famous athletes and excellent at what they do, but that does not make them all role models. Many are kicked out due to drugs and other illegal activities. The Houston Texans recently fired 3 for smoking weed at a hotel after a game. There are some though that go out of their way to inspire and help people. JJ Watt for example, and A. Johnson are my favorites.

Take it one day at a time. :)

No, I don't consider athletes role models. Every time the media put someone who supposedly is the boy/girl-next-door, it turns out they aren't. Athletes are like everyone else -- flawed, but with their good qualities as well. There may be a few who would qualify as role models, but I look at "real" people for role models, people who do for others without announcing to the world how wonderful they are for doing good; people who just try to live a decent life.

Aaron Hernandez of the Patriots was once considered a very successful and popular football player. Today, he's behind bars accused of murder. At first, he seemed like the boy next door who made good. Well, if you read the news reports, turns out his wonderful life wasn't so wonderful. The NFL may have covered up some of his bad behavior just beacuse he seemed like such a success.

Take baseball. Ty Cobb and Honus Wagner are considered giants of the game and heros off the field. Both were miserable human beings. Babe Ruth ? a womanizer and drunk, but yes, an amazing ball player.

There are some sports players who should be looked up to. Coach Dungee of the Colts is one name that comes to mind. Tom Brady has lived a pretty spotless life. There are lots of players who DO the right thing. Unfortunately, they are outnumbered by the players who don't.

Which is the problem with the media. We hear all about the bad stuff and not enough about the good stuff that some teams/players engage in.

And yes, Incognito has a reputation as a dirty player in the NFL. this is no choirboy.

You mention Crosby as a good role model .... I've heard plenty of people call Crosby a dirty player. I think athletes as role models is a train wreck and not smart.

Role models shouldn't be celebrities or athletes.

Look at Britney Spears - promised to remain a virgin and look what happened.
Justin Bieber - that kid is a mess.

Incognito is a bomb about to explode.
Vick is better today than he was years ago. But he's still judged based on his previous actions.

Look at the Flyers vs Caps game a week ago - the entire ice was fighting because the Flyers were losing.

Sports and competition brings out the worst in people. You're bound to see an athlete do something questionable at some time.

Right. For the most part the ones that get the attention are the ones getting in trouble. I'm sure there are good role models in the NFL but they don't get the attention so they don't "exist."

So **maybe** if more attention was given to GOOD folks, kids would choose different role models???

Given the most recent NFL embarrassment (Incognito hazing a fellow teammate) do you think folks still use NFL players as role models for kids?

Do or Would you?

Me? Not for a long time now. I think hockey players (Crosby, Stamkos, Quick to name a few...) are more noble and better role models rather than Thug-Nation NFL guys.

What do you think?
