was I a thread killer on this by talking about KJ's legs? Sorry I didn't mean to. So here's bumping it back up to page one. The thread is about Artificial Intelligence not legs!

LOL@Karen: I didn't see this reply until after I changed my profile pic. I changed it because of another thread about pictures of us at our heaviest and though this current one isn't my heaviest it IS, by far, my worst pic ever.

@AMARANTHAQ: The discussion on this thread is good and I didn't say it went off-topic, you said you didn't understand the question so I re-posted it. No harm done.

As for artificial intelligence I can see how a computer program can get even more sophisticated than they already are but I shudder to think that computers would have "freewill", we would be meaningless to them and then eliminated. Of course, that's just my opinion, LOL!

Hmmm, threads on a social media site such as spark do tend to either be in the category of having someone start a thread and an interesting discussion grows up around the original topic, with everyone giving their opinion and input. Or, there are numerous threads lending themselves to yes/no answers to questions such as did we walk today. (I did.)

The best threads on the café seem to me to be of that first type. There doesn't seem to be a spark rule that we must give a yes or no answer to every question posed, as if it were a "did you walk today" kind of question and it doesn't seem to me, personally, that those engender very interesting discussions.

It is just somewhat unwelcoming lol to feel one's opinions on a discussion thread are irritating someone because one is not giving a yes or no answer to the OP that the OP accepts. I've noticed a pattern of that recently on the café. It is somewhat divisive in my opinion.

Anyhow to the yes or no question of do we think man will ever develop AI, I've personally answered it with my opinion that IT ALREADY EXISTS!

So the question is moot, in my opinion. I don't have a yes or no.

Not trying to upset anyone or be argumentative, just my two cents for today. Peace and joy to all.

AI has been around as a concept since 1955.

@Sheryl, liked your description of the systemic nature of what AI actually is as it exists in realty.

Somewhat confused by the thread in general, but an interesting discussion.

@Sheryl: Oh yeah, I "get it" and I suppose I should've said I wasn't exactly thinking about machines in human form, lol! A.I. (scienfictionally speaking) can be in any form. As for the unexpected results; program failure is ALWAYS a possibility.

It isn't so much about 'free will'....it's more about 'unexpected results'.
People keep thinking in terms of A.I. looking like a machine in an android package, but the A.I. may be the connection of several systems communicating with each other and a decision making central server computer being the 'brain'. You can have machine mobility via drones. You have security cameras as eyes. You have internet as the ears and eyes and face of the machine. The interface connections form the nervous system of the artificial intelligence...

I always thought the Terminator movies were some of the scariest because it could eventually come true and the machines could take over. They are so advanced and doing more each day so I do believe that AI will be a reality one day in the not too distant future.

here is a what if

currently they have a computer that can recognize objects in any picture (previously unseen) at a more accurate and faster rate than humans. They can also identify words. Given the combination of the 2, it isn't a stretch to put both together to identify terrorist activities. And with security cameras in public areas it easy to track and make law enforcement aware. Perhaps even secure an area if necessary. The problem is that even with a simple scenario like that ...what happens to the innocent bystanders in the immediate vicinity; will their safety be considered a primary issue or will the apprehension of the perpetrator to protect the general public be the primary priority? we don't deal with terrorists ...what happens?

I'm betting in some way, shape or form A.I. will come about. It may not be exactly how TV and the movies envision it, but it is in some way possible.

There are people a lot smarter than me, so it wouldn't surprise me if that eventually happened.

I would be worried because these beings would not have a conscience (is that the right word) or a soul.

Made it to my maintenance weight of 125 pounds.

Even though I have reached goal. I still don't know everything about weight loss.

the other issue with A.I. is that as we get more and more into communicating thru technology versus human interaction, some people relate to their technology as if it were animate. The more technology develops robots that mimic human emotions the more people will relate to machines as if they were living objects. check out this video on YouTube

It's already here.
I fear the standards of values they may end up programming into a system. Sort of like an excerpt of the film 'I, ROBOT' where Will Smith's character was saved by a robot while a child in another car was left to drown because the odds were for better success in saving Smith's character.

100 years ago, if I had walked up to a person on the street and told them that in 1969 a man would walk on the moon or that in 2013 we could fly from NYC to London in 4 hours on the Concorde, they'd say we were insane. In 1913, no one "flew" over the Altantic and now, it's something we do on a routine basis.

Will their ever be a machine that is smarter than humans ? Maybe not today, but I suspect it's a lot closer than you'd think. There are cars in development that will drive themselves. Machines already do a lot of thinking for us. It's just a matter of time before they can think for themselves.

then... it's all about defeating Skynet !! LOL !!!!

I can't imagine how A.I. would ever be developed but I can see faster computers that can do remarkable calculations and feats but never of their own doings (thought).
