Yes, all things in moderation, however, it is truly ok to fall off the wagon as long as you pick yourself up & get back on again. I will also admit that I too indulge once in a while, BUT, that is not the NORM!! If you don't indulge & treat yourself once in a while, you will not know what it feels like to be normal ever again. It's okay!!!

I believe that when I indulge by eating too much of something that is not good for me, I typically respond by having some good days. When I think about it this is really backwards thinking because it sounds like my punishment for the behavior of indulging is to eat well. Well, now I am going to have to ponder this thinking for awhile!

I know that I have foods that I find difficult to limit portion sizes on, however, I believe this is more about my thinking. I don't believe any food can make me powerless over the choices I make. Maybe it is better to identify with the emotional attachment that I have to a particular food that influences the indulging behavior. I was born in in NY, but upon moving to Illinois I found there were certain foods that I could not obtain in my area of the world. I have lived here for 20 years and one day I walked into a store and there on the shelf was the brand of potato chips I grew up eating. In a minute the chips were in my grocery cart. You can bet those chips did not last a long time when I got them home.

For me, there is no food that I like eating (even like a lot) that I can not quite eating when I choose to, without being concerned about eating it day after day. However, I absolutely agree that I still have "trigger" foods. I might eat an entire large bag of potato chips (salt, calorie, fat, preservatives, etc. to the yingyang), so obviously my eating one chip "triggered" the urge for me to eat the whole bag. So not much moderation, right? However, it might be weeks or even months before I do it again. So, I would say this is an example of "triggering" that did no "triggering" harm. It all depends, I suppose, on what foods and meals I choose for the next several days, assuming I went over calorie maintenance with the chips.

Just an opinion, and no offense taken for all of you who disagree.

I can't tell if people are agreeing with my earlier posts, arguing with them, or ignoring them; but in all cases, I think it's great. It's nice having some threads on SparkPeople where people can share differing opinion.

I agree sometimes it is so difficult to just stop when there is so much left around. When I do purchase larger size bags of foods I find it helpful to get it home and make up portion size baggies. Then when when the urge strikes I am grabbing one serving size. It reduces the likelihood that I will end up eating a lot of calories mindlessly. It sounds like you found something that works for you. Good job!

I was passing out candy and instead of draining the bowl like I usually do. I told myself, Pick three of what you really love and you can have them when you are done passing out candy. And that worked. Where as I used to tell myself the Halloween Candy bowl was 'off limits' and so then I would eat one and then drain the bowl because I felt guilty.

Potato chips seem to be a trigger for me so if I really want them, I buy a single serving bag.

Made it to my maintenance weight of 125 pounds.

Even though I have reached goal. I still don't know everything about weight loss.

Adding to my previous post after reading the intervening responses to the topic of "All Things in Moderation," not only does a policy of not eating all things in moderation not work for me, it would make me deathly ill due to an inability to eat certain foods.

Liked a comment made of it being a matter "different strokes" for different people and that certain foods acted as triggers for some individuals. I believe that for me having trigger foods and maintaining my successful long term weight control journey would be massively undermined if I adopted an "all things in moderation approach" and somehow got the idea that I could eat my trigger foods in moderation.

Lol, I can't eat my trigger foods in moderation.

Doesn't mean I can't have other less than perfectly healthy foods in moderation, but trigger foods just aren't in the cards.

Also noticed a comment in this thread chastising posters for not understanding the meaning of "all things in moderation" as the OP stated it.

Personally I understand the topic but have my own opinion on it. I believe café threads allow folks to express their own opinion on topics without necessarily having to by rote answer the exact question or statement made in the original post. Just my take on that. Peace to all who think differently, different strokes and all that jazz! emoticon

To me that is what eating right is all about. Eating healthy is very important, but we also need to be able to enjoy the foods we crave once in a while.

Come on everyone! We all know that there is a big difference between not eating foods that you are allergic to and eating things in moderation!

I love cantaloupe. It's my favorite melon. Over the years I've developed a reaction to it that makes my lips swell up to Mick Jagger proportions. Of course I'm not going to eat any of it. Unless I need swollen lips for a costume!

I don't like hominy or squash, there is no moderation in the amount that eat, as I don't eat any.

The OP is talking about being able to eat the foods you like (or that don't make you sick) in MODERATION! Like a part of a "normal" diet, like skinny people do.

Geez!

I don't do "all" things in moderation, either. There's some things that are just not worthy of my eating them. For example, these:

I'm more like "whatever you truly love - with moderation" kind of person. If it is a good delicious food that I totally enjoy, I will find a way to work it in, in appropriate frequency/portion size. If it's crap... well. Pass!

I will say that I did used to eat those horrifyingly awful halloween toffees, even though I never liked them, just because they were there.

Goal 1 - break 200 (46 pounds lost)**DONE**
Goal 2 - leave obesity behind (BMI 29.9, at 185#) **DONE**
Goal 3 - BMI = Normal (154# or less)

I personally don't follow the all things in moderation approach as I have some food allergies/sensitives. I also believe some "foods" just aren't food at all and I prefer not to put them in my body, considering you are what you eat and all that.

That said if you normally eat a ton of candy at Halloween and this year you just ate a few pieces then that's a great big step in the right direction.

AMARANTHAQ: You bring up a good point. What works for some, does not work for others. Different yokes for different blokes, as I like to say. Or, different strokes for different folks as others might say.

For some people trying to eat in moderation certain "trigger" foods can cause binge eating or health issues. For others, not eating any of certain foods, can eventually lead to such a desire for them, that it triggers binge eating.

We all are trying to choose the best avenue of success. It's not always easy.

For me, all things in moderation just doesn't work. Because of health issues, there are things I don't eat because they make me ill.

I notice often on the boards at spark there are statements made disparaging people who eliminate things from their diets as if doing so is some sort of fad, but for many elimination of certain foods is mandated by a need to stay healthy.

Good job!

I agree that for many of us who want to continue to enjoy some treats even if they are considered relatively "unhealthy" that we can/should show moderation and allow ourselves to have them once in a while.

There are those SparkPeople who seem to have cut out all "junk" or most "crap" from their diets and who eat basically only healthy things. That's great, but it's not something that all of are going to do, either because it is too difficult or because, in my case, too undesirable.

I was able to have 2 pieces of candy instead of the 6 piece serving size. Just keeping with the theory that everything is acceptable.
