I was appalled when I saw that story yesterday. Who is this woman to judge? If she doesn't want to take part in giving kids treats, then simply don't turn your light on and be done with it. Going through the effort to write, copy and distribute this letter is just plain wrong.

I am all for parents taking responsibility for their children's weight problems, this women doesn't have a right to tell the children with her letter. It's Halloween - give them a treat.

You didn't gain it in a day, you won't lose it in a day.

I've seen that on another site & don't really have enough facts to know whether it is a true or false story. Sad if true that someone could do something that awful to children and parents.

I've been wondering if it does not fall into some legal category of intentionally inflicting emotional distress or something having to do with dispensing hate mail or ... well, something actionable legally or something the person could be cited for.

I think it's horrible that she would do that to a child.

Not like the parents need to be told their child is overweight. Just like when some people have the audacity to tell me I'm overweight. I already know that.
I say treats. Let the child experience what it means to be a child for Halloween. work on the weight issue the rest of the year.

I agree about giving out little favor bags - this would be a winning approach.

Better to have made little grab bags to give to the kids with crayons, books, toys, etc.

I would have received a letter, and I am a parent of a kid who would receive a letter. I encourage trick or treating because its a good walk. The candy, he can eat it for one night, and then it gets turned into the dentist, who gives cash. my kids are totally down with that plan.

What an insensitive, sanctimonious witch! She has no business shaming kids. I mean, really, what does she think she will accomplish? Nobody's parents want to hear from some stranger/neighbor how they should rear their children. If she's so concerned about the health of today's children, then either give out healthy candy alternatives or don't bother giving anything at all. Who is she to judge people based on size? Really? Children have enough trouble with peers; they don't need their issues further exacerbated by some judgmental wretch.

None of her business. If she doesn't want to give out sweets that's fine. She can go out for the evening or give out apples and oranges instead. But to make a judgment like that is inappropriate meddling. And what's she going to do when a group of kids come together with one obese child among them? Single out that one child and embarrass them in front of their friends? That would be so hurtful to the child and could lead to teasing and bullying from the friends as well.

Bad idea.

I would have been a child who would've received one of those letters. I probably could have read it, and would have been very, very upset. It would not have any way improved my health, but damaged my self esteem. I knew that I was fat, my parents knew that I was fat, and it was a lot more than Halloween candy that caused it.

If you don't like giving children candy, fine. Give out change, pretzel snacks, little party favor type toys, or nothing at all, but don't be a witch. Size is one of many factors of child health, so to single out the "fat kids" is terrible.

Absolutely cruel to give little kids letters like that. I hope she has reconsidered that idea.

If she is so concerned about kid's health, she could just give out something nice that isn't candy/food to EVERY child- or not pass out treats at all.

The wicked witch comes out at Halloween! She acts as though kids don't have feelings.

As I've always said, obesity in children is not from candy -- it's from inactivity, and why adults refuse to see that this is the case in today's world is curious to me. I, and all the kids I knew, ate candy like it was going out of style when I was young. There were very few cases of obesity. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see that video games, keeping kids in because of the danger of being abducted, more TV than we ever had, decreased PE in school, plus a myriad of other ideas and practices are what are contributing to childhood obesity.

Halloween is once a year, and it's up to parents to decide how much candy their children should be allowed to have -- not nosey buttinskies like this woman. I wouldn't take my child to her house.

I saw the same thing, and wondered if parents would be up in arms in that city. I mean seriously a letter home. While I applaud her caring, and she does sound like she cares there are better ways, like healthy snacks, and treats she does set herself up as judge and jury to all obese kids.

Saw this while on the treadmill this morning and all I could think was "God, I hope kids egg and TP the crap out of her house." Who is she to judge kids like this? Is she a medical professional or knowledgeable of these kids' medical history? I mean, seriously, how sanctimonious can you get?
