I find that some people find it easier to try to change their lives "the quick and easy way" as it takes less time yet they don't realize that it won't work in the long run or that it is just a scam.

The thing is, any diet works for a while, especially one that makes you cut out a whole bunch of foods. You will lose weight because you reduce calories drastically-- until you figure out what you CAN eat. I remember when my mom went on super low carb. She said, "I can have all the butter I want, but I can't have anything to put it on!" But eventually she figured out how to make buttered cauliflower puree and realized she could eat bacon-lettuce rolls with mayonnaise, and the weight loss pretty much stopped. Last summer she did the same thing with gluten-free. That actually only worked for a few weeks, until she discovered almond flour. I made her/us some almond flour biscuits that were delicious, and then realized they had twice the calories of a regular biscuit. She loves researching recipes, so it doesn't take long for her to get back to her regular caloric intake or higher on a new "don't eat X" diet.

I used to do stuff like that too. Like the Mayo Clinic Diet that I found out has nothing to do with the Mayo Clinic.

Made it to my maintenance weight of 125 pounds.

Even though I have reached goal. I still don't know everything about weight loss.

"When it sounds too good to be true, it's too good to be true!" Some people are always looking for a short cut or a quick fix rather than putting out the effort to do it the best way for success for the long term goals.

I think it's more desperate and uninformed than 'dumb'. And there probably are at least a few people that get results with all those wacky diets.

even legitimate programs don't work for every person.

always remember you are unique, just like everybody else emoticon

I used to be "dumb" enough to think that I would lose weight really fast by trying various "dumb" diet plans too. Some of them worked, too, but not without suffering in some way or another (as you mentioned with your co-worker).

What's magical, is when you realize that the safest and most practical way to lose weight is just to eat less of a well balanced diet. No secret here. Just common sense.

I used to weigh over 100 lbs more than I do now and have taken it off in stages over the last 10 years. I really have been committed over the last 2 years, and my mentality has completely changed. People always ask me what I do, expecting some sort of pill or miracle diet. They're always disappointed in the old eat well and exercise response. Even very smart people that I know advocate supplement and all sorts of stuff that I'm sure wreck the body. I've even had some intelligent friends that aren't that overweight prescribed weight loss pills (?!) from their doctors.

There is a magic formula for weight loss and weight maintenance. Eat less. Move more.

I know what you mean. An otherwise smart woman on another forum got a little mad at me when she was bragging about results with the HCG diet. Of course I can't know every situation, but I told her flat out that the way to lose weight is by a sensible, balanced plan, not the HGC diet.

So I stopped engaging with her as she kept bragging to those that would listen. She seemed to be a natural online forum "leader" where she had followers that were fans and thought whatever she did had to be wonderful, because she was brilliant (and I do think she was very smart about some things). Of course in time the bragging stopped and whatever weight she lost came back. I actually think she hates me and is very jealous because my "plan" works. I once weighed over 200 lbs but have kept my weight close to 120 over the past 7 years.

I confess.... I believe in a magic formula {that works for me...when I stick to it}
Unlimited non-starchy veggies, lean protein (in reasonable quantities), healthy fats (in reasonable quantities)....severely limiting starches and sugars (with no more than 3 fruits a day).
I think a lifetime of over indulgence has given me a tendency toward insulin resistance.

It isn't a one size fits all world...but we need to find what fits us.

I blame the Bigges Loser, late night infomercials and the grocery store women's rags for convincing women that if they drastically cut their caloric intake and kill themselves in a gym, they too can wear a bikini in 30 days. You too could lose 10 inches in a week !

Most people don't want to accept the fact that "they didn't gain the weight overnight, it's not coming off overnight". Everyone wants instantaneous results with as little effort as possible. We all wanted that overnight miracle.

I was talking with a co-worker who was appalled at the profit oil companies make per year. I told him, if he could invent a pill that would help people lose weight with no side effects in a period of 30, 60 or 90 days, he's be richer than Bill Gates and Warren Buffet combined.

Well, there is no easy way to lose weight. I wish there were. Losing weight really is a lot of hard work. Does it get easier ? With time and practice, certain aspects do. But if we want to take the weight off and keep it off, we have to do some work whether it's logging food, getting regular exercise, watching our portions, etc. Being healthy requires some effort on our part.

The people that I work with are all very intelligent, well educated people. But some of them are as dumb as a box of hair when it comes to diet and nutrition!

One lady was telling me about this great diet that she has started. You eliminate certain foods for a week then get to add stuff in over the next 3 weeks then start over. You cut your calories down to 1200 a day and do certain vigorous work outs. She thinks this is a great plan. She also mentioned that she passed out during one of her workouts. She also tore a muscle in her back. The bruise was huge! She is also saying that she is grouchy and irritable around her family.

Then she says, But you don't need to worry about dieting as you always eat healthy and your so thin!

Another lady comes in with a new diet from her Doctor. This one is called the PAWS diet. You can eat all of the pecans, almonds, walnuts and apples you want. In fact, you are supposed to eat 1/2 apple and a "generous" serving of nuts with each meal and for snacks. At least 3 or 4 times a day. The small print says limit calories to 1200 a day. You also must eliminate certain foods from your diet and eat lots of the allowed foods.

So we did the math. Eating "generous" portions of nuts and apples 3 times a day would max out the calories. Now I realize that "generous" is an ambiguous term.. My generous would be a cup sized serving. So 3 cups of nuts and 3 apples and I'm done for the day.
She was rather surprised at the results.

Woman are the worst about this. We so desperately want to believe that there is magic formula to lose weight and be healthy. We want to believe that if we eat the right combinations of foods that we will lose weight. We lose any common sense and intelligence that we ever have had when someone dangles a new weight loss product in front of us.
