I just graduated high school a few years ago, and I know at my high school we are only required to take one year of gym. In middle school we take it for a semester each year, and in elementary I believe we had gym twice a week, but it may have only been once.

I had to take gym class and I'm among those who hated it. You know if it was really just about physical education, doing some exercises for fitness and some kind of activity (with some personal choice included in the activities) it would have been fine.

Instead I remember being that unpopular kid who was always the last one chosen for the "team." And then when I goofed up (which was often because I had no self-confidence to even try when it came to competitive sports, plus I was overweight) the unfortunate kids with me stuck on their team became very angry, and I'd be even more unpopular the next time this routine was repeated.

I am happy to do a personal exercise routine, take walks, ride my treadmill or whatever as an adult. I do realize the importance of phyiscal activity. But you won't find me volunteering to play on a softball team, or even a single softball game at at a picnic or something. It reminds me of those days.

It's hard for me to fathom that with an obesity crisis in our world, especially with kids, gym classes would not be required. I totally get that not all kids can do them (for a variety of reasons) and I think the various TYPES of activity should be optional so kids can choose how they prefer to be active, but let's face it ... lack of activity is a large part of the crisis.

Killerjoe, PE was also my daily dose of bullying. And thank goodness for Chorus in the 7th and 8th grades that got me out of gym for half a year.

Made it to my maintenance weight of 125 pounds.

Even though I have reached goal. I still don't know everything about weight loss.

My kids have gym class every day at school. It's required by state law. Neither of them loves gym class, especially on running day (once a week) but I think it is good for them. And they get to do some fun units like roller skating and climbing.
Do any schools still do jump rope as a gym class activity? That was my favorite as a kid. I can still do a couple of tricks but forgot most of them.

You mean physical education, not the existence of a gymnasium space, right?

It seems like children here do have PE classes, at least through middle school. In high school, it seems to vary, but most kids go out for at least one competitive sport a year.

Am I the only person here who didn't hate PE in high school? I went to an international school, so we played neat games from around the world and a lot of soccer. I also lifted weights in the morning before school and did sports after school--volleyball, basketball and track...plus when I wasn't at practice I did lap swimming or helped to coach basketball for younger kids.

Dances: salsa (standard/LA), casino, rueda de casino, cumbia Colombiana, bachata, mambo, cha-cha-chá, merengue, reggaetón.

Currently learning: Mexican cumbia, danzón, Cuban rumba

Dances to Learn in the future: flamenco, tango Argentino, samba, belly dancing, bhangra, ballroom rumba

Yes but in elementary school k to 6, the teachers teach gym to the kids not gym teachers.

The school district in which I work is different for each building. The Elementary level (K-5) has gym (PE) once a week. At the Middle School level (6-8) the students are required to take half a year of health and the other half of gym (if they students are involved in sports they have Advanced PE for the whole year). At the high school level, stuents are required to earn one full credit of PE.

Each state dictates school requirements not the schools so if the state you live in does not have physical education as a requirement the school then has the choice of offering it or not just like band, chorus or art.

For me, gym was my time to get my daily dose of bullying, I hated gym class and would have my mom write lots of notes to have me excused.

My kids have gym 3 times a week and 1/2 hour recess everyday. That practice goes through 8th grade at our school.

I think they should bring it back to the schools! We had gym everyday! We also had physical fitness tests!

We also played outside and rode bikes and was active! WE made up our fun and didn't have the technology distraction that kids have today and the predators were pretty much non existent and you could play outside as a child.

The kids I nanny for had it 3 times a week in elementary school, but aren't required to have it in middle school. In high school they're required to take "personal fitness" a 1 semester class.
I was too physically disabled to participate in gym much as a kid, and got out of it in high school thanks to marching band. The state accepts marching band as a PE credit, which for me was awesome. I could march (just roll stepping) but even that wasn't always reliable since i had to drop out of parades if my knee collapsed.

I had an awake nightmare just now thinking about gym class....yuck.

But our schools here have received grants from our local hospital and several different foundations to pay for gym classes and teachers. So every kid gets an hour a day whether want it or not!

Flashing back to dodge ball....baseball.... need a valium...

If I hadn't had gym while I was in school it wouldn't have bothered me. Gym was the bane of my existence.

More than 20 years ago we only needed one gym credit for high school.

Made it to my maintenance weight of 125 pounds.

Even though I have reached goal. I still don't know everything about weight loss.
