PLINTHESS,
I agree with you! I am in my 40's and I also have to get up in the middle of the night to use the restroom. I don't want to wake up my husband so I shuffle over there in the dark. I'd rather not have to lift the lid and make noise.

I usually leave the lid up because I live in a very hot climate and mildew builds up. I am an avid bathroom cleaner so my bowl is usually sparkling. I also like it up in others' houses so I don't have to touch it to lift it up in case those people don't like cleaning as much as I do.

My toothbrush is kept far from our toilet. We have a separate little room for our toilet that has a door.

You are quite right, it should be down. But I bet you are quite young, aren't you? At my age I need to get up 2 or 3 times in the night for a pee. I try not to wake up too much, so I shuffle to the loo, sit down, stand up, flush and shuffle back. I do not need any extra activity like lids up and down - and I don't share this loo with anyone - so why not? I would be interested to hear your answer to this when you're 70!

Closing the lid is not going to keep fecal coliform from getting on your toothbrush. This is why toothbrushes should be stored in a drawer or cabinet.

You know what will definitely get fecal coliform on your hands? TOUCHING THE TOILET.

For the first part: If I have company coming over I shut the lid. My kitties don't play in the water so that's not an issue around my home. But, it isn't the most pleasant thing for people to look at and I don't mind it but I don't want to make other people look at the toilet bowl if they don't have to.

For the second part: I ALWAYS return the toilet to how I found it. I don't want to be rude after all.

I like to have it closed and I'll tell you why, I watched a show on germs and after you flush the toilet little tiny gases that you can't really see come up from the toilet they can carry fecal matter and urine , imagine a lot of people have their tooth brushes in a tooth brush holder those fecal gases are coming out and landing on your tooth brush on everything in your bathroom and they said these gases can last up to 20 minutes or so after flushing. It can land on everything in your bathroom, hairbrush, Q tips , you name it!
They actually had how much germs it spreads after a flushing and it was gross and disgusting! Before that I use to leave the lid up, but next time you flush if you really look you can see something coming up from your toilet, pay attention.
If I'm at someone's house I leave the seat as I found it.

Our toilet lid is usually up in my house. I actually prefer it down (mainly so things don't fall in the toilet) but it just doesn't happen all the time. It doesn't really irritate me if others don't close it. Our animals don't play in the toilet.

I honestly don't know if I leave the toilet lid exactly as I found it in other people's homes all the time. I probably do. Most people seem to have the lid up and I don't think I would close it if it was up.

Lol, I thought only my kitties were fascinated with the toilets!
I also leave the toilet closed to keep the dogs and cats out and because I don't want "toilet" spray all over the bathroom.

I used to live in a very humid area where mold and mildew could grow on anything. Then I had to leave the lid up because even with bleach tabs in the tank mildew would grow.(I once found mildew growing on glass in the shape of my baby's handprint!)

As I guest, I leave it as I found it!

I leave mine up for the same reason as MISSSVJS. Mildew developes in just a few days. It gets worse in the summer. I used to put it down when I had pets. When visiting I follow the house rules.

Recent studies have definitely shown that one should have the toilet lid closed when flushing.

However, in my bathroom the lid is usually up; but in my wife's bathroom the lid is usually down.

{What I don't do is leave BOTH the lid and the seat up. I once sat into the toilet when I didn't check for that and that was the last time I made that mistake. LOL!}

I leave it up. To me it's not really an issue. Except when I was having chemo - they told me to put it down before flushing then, just in case chemicals escaped!

However .. they do say that you shouldn't have your toothbrush within 6 feet of the toilet if you flush it with the lid up!!

gotta leave it down for two reasons: 1. the kitties need to climb up on the toilet to get to the sink (most important) and 2. it's bad feng shui to leave a toilet seat up, drains the energy of the house.

I agree it looks nicer to put it down, but in my experience (at least where I live with high humidity) when we leave it down mildew has a tendency to want to grow under the rim even though I clean it every week, but if we leave it up that doesn't happen. Just an observation!

I close the lid AND the bathroom door. I've always had dogs, so closing the toilet lid has been a habit for years.

I started closing the door because I wanted to keep an eye on the dogs when they were younger, and now it's just a habit.

I don't know any reason to leave the toilet lid up. The only time I don't close the lid is when it's a public restroom and there is no lid!

Most of the people I know leave their toilet lids up. I don't understand why. Do you leave yours up? Why or why not?

I shut mine for a couple of reasons:
1) The kitties play in the toilet when the lid is left up. That's just wrong and gross and it's a source of potential infection, not only for the pets, but for people too. The kitties go around the house after playing in the toilet, with wet little paws, walking on stuff. Not okay. I don't want coliform bacteria spread around my house.
2) It looks better. Who wants to look into the toilet bowl? Whether it's clean or not it's still where you go to the bathroom and who wants to see that?

My family refuses to shut their toilet lids. Absolutely refuses. My sister insists that it needs to be up so it's easier to use. I don't get it. What's so hard about opening a lid?
emoticon

Finally, when you go to someone's house, do you return the toilet seat to the configuration that it was in before you used the facilities? No one (with the exception of one friend who also keeps hers shut at home so her pets don't play in he toilet) who comes to my house does. Anytime I have guests over, I have to constantly keep shutting the toilet lid. It seems like the first thing that people do when they enter my house...use the bathroom and leave the lid up.

Why? emoticon
