"A handful of friends/relatives will expect me to go into graphic details"

Just keep in mind - their expectation does not equal your obligation! You have the right to your privacy, and the right to choose NOT to discuss the graphic details. Personally, I'd bore them by repeating the basic-but-simple (and true) details.... I watch my portions, I don't eat junk, I exercise more. When pressed for details, just repeat.

And oh my gosh? They would haul out "before" shots on a tablet? Even if you asked them to please not do that? HOW RUDE AND INSENSITIVE.

Goal 1 - break 200 (46 pounds lost)**DONE**
Goal 2 - leave obesity behind (BMI 29.9, at 185#) **DONE**
Goal 3 - BMI = Normal (154# or less)

Congratulations on the great job you've done. emoticon

What you said in your last post seems a perfect thing to say: "I want to catch up on how things are with other friends and family I haven't seen for a while."

Thanks for the suggestions. Most of the time a simple "yes I have" or thank you works. A handful of friends/relatives will expect me to go into graphic details about how I lost. I know at least 3 that will even go as far to show pics (copied to their tablet) of us from several years ago-done before! I will recommend Spark and I lost the Old Fashioned Way with moderation and some exercise- and nothing else, I don't want long conversations about how I lost my weight. If I am singled out and asked in private I don't mind. I want to catch up on how things are with the other friends and family I haven't seen for a while.

Lots of good suggestions already. I always just say, I try to eat healthy. You know, watch the junk food and sugary stuff. And I get some exercise. If they're overweight themselves and seem really interested in further detail, I tell them about Sparkpeople.com and how it's all about just making small changes that really add up.

I'd have to agree with the pp about a plan for the holidays. I daresay there will be a few people who haven't seen you in a while, who will be amazed at how much you've lost-- and then will proceed to encourage you to eat "just a little bit" of something you normally wouldn't touch because "oh, you've lost so much weight, you can have some of this!"

First, congratulations! Very impressive!

Second, some people will ask, simply because they think they should; but they don't really want a detailed explanation. Others will ask because they are genuinely interested/curious, and then you have a green light to be honest and thorough with them.

Third, you also have in your thread title: "& the holidays." I initially lost 45 pounds, going from 215 to 170. But for four straight years I would gain between 8-12 pounds from late November (Thanksgiving) through February (Super Bowl). Each time I got my gained weight off fairly quickly. However this last year, I gained 15 pounds or more and then DIDN'T get it back off. I was maintaining my weight gain and still have found I only have taken a few pounds off since late February.

Here is my point. You have worked so hard and done such an admirable job. The holidays can be a real snare/trap for some of us to gain weight, some times a lot of weight back. So I encourage you to have a really good plan of attack for the holidays. I better have, or I will be back to square one.

Again, kudos! Very nicely done.

Congratulations!

Just tell them it was lost through moderation and exercise.

You might get some negative responses. Mostly people will just say oh and move on.

Congrats on your loss!
As for the comments, enjoy the compliments.
Answer the how with "I started eating a healthy diet, cut out junk food and fast food" and then segue into and "How are you? You look great!"

My response to "how did you do it?" was always, "I quit eating junk." Nobody really questions you after that, unless they really, sincerely want to know because they're fighting their own weight. But if someone really wants to know, they seek you out in private. Then I give more detail, that I used a computer system to count calories and other nutrients, and started exercising. Really, though, most people only ask because they feel like for some reason they're supposed to, and if you give a simple answer, they'll move on to gossip about whether your cousin is coloring her hair and how your other cousin can't hang on to his money.

You can talk as much OR AS LITTLE as you like. If you don't want to go into in-depth conversations, prepare yourself with some standard answers:

WOW you have lost weight!
-- Why yes I have, thanks for noticing!

How much did you lose?
-- oh, quite a lot actually!

How did you do it?
-- watching what I eat and moving more.

No really, how? What's your secret?
-- Really, that's how! I've been eating healthy, watching my portions, and exercising.

You can stop right there! Or you can carry on with more details IF YOU WISH. At your discretion.

I don't understand why you are not feeling confident about this. Why does talking about your weight loss make you so uncomfortable?

I'm going to have the same issue but some know that I've lost weight. My sister in law even called and said she had heard I was super skinny. Anyway the first question was did I have surgery? I said no, I was then asked how, I told her thru diet and exercise, the right way. And between me and you I cant wait to show off. Best of luck to you on your journey. Enjoy your victory. emoticon

Congrats! How great that you've lost weight!

If people complement you, just say thanks. If they ask how, just tell them you've done it the old fashioned way, through diet and exercise (or don't mention exercise if you haven't been). If they ask what diet, tell them moderation--eating mostly the same things, just less of them and healthier versions of your usual recipes.

Congrats again on your amazing progress so far!

Some of the guests visiting us this year haven't seen me for about a year and a half. I Never told them I was losing weight (in case I failed-again). Well a year and a half later I went from over 335 lbs to 230 lbs and the weight loss is now noticeable to people that haven't seen me for a while. I know this is So Stupid, but how do I handle the questions about how I lost it. I'm on No specfic plan. No weight loss surgery, or doctors directions. Only moderation and reworked some recipes into healthier versions. I Will tell them about Spark, but being a little on the quiet side, don't want the topics to be about my weight or go into great details about how I lost. or give any advice. I still have about 70 more lbs to lose. Any suggestions on what to say to them-I know there will be plenty of questions.
