today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was, since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape. He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as:

- Knowing when to come in out of the rain;
- Why the early bird gets the worm;
- Life isn't always fair;
- And maybe it WAS my fault.

Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend more than you can earn) and reliable strategies (adults, not children, are in charge).

His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned but overbearing regulations
were set in place. Reports of a 6-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition.

Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job that they themselves had failed to do in disciplining their unruly children.

It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer
sun block or an aspirin to a student; but could not inform parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion.

Common Sense lost the will to live as the churches became businesses; and criminals received better treatment than their victims.

Common Sense took a beating when you couldn't defend yourself from a burglar in your own home and the burglar could sue you for assault.

Common Sense was preceded in death
-by his parents, Truth and Trust,
-by his wife, Discretion,
-by his daughter, Responsibility,
-and by his son, Reason.

He is survived by his 5 stepbrothers;
- I Know My Rights
- I Want It Now
- Someone Else Is To Blame
- I'm A Victim
- Pay me for Doing Nothing

Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone.

The Haircut

One day a florist went to a barber for a haircut. After the cut, he
asked about his bill, and the barber replied,

I cannot accept money from you, I'm doing community service this week.
The florist was pleased and left the shop.

when the barber went to open his shop the next morning, there was a
'thank you' card and a dozen roses waiting for him at his door.

Later, a cop comes in for a haircut, and when he tries to pay his bill,
the barber again replied, 'I cannot accept money from you , I'm doing

community service this week.' The cop was happy and left the shop.

The next morning when the barber went to open up, there was a 'thank
you' card and a dozen donuts waiting for him at his door.

Then a Congressman came in for a haircut, and when he went to pay his
bill, the barber again replied,

'I cannot accept money from you. I'm doing community service this week.'
The Congressman was very happy and left the shop.

The next morning, when the barber went to open up, there were a dozen
Congressmen lined up waiting for a free haircut.

And that, my friends, illustrates the fundamental difference between the
citizens of our country and the politicians who run it.

That little tantrum cost 24 billion dollars!!!!!!!!! Just imagine all the good that money would of done for the elderly, homeless, food banks, veterans AND EDUCATION, making schools safer.... just so disgusted and these people need to be voted out of their jobs. (Imagine costing your employer 24 billion dollars????? see how quickly you'd be fired).
There should be so many years they can serve and then they can't run again just like the President , because the same people get voted in......
I hope people let them know how they feel about this shut down when it comes to re-elections.

Starting to like the new me!
Waiting for my garden to come to life!

I am so thinking of all Sparkies in the US in these uncertain times.
My government has been defaulting on day to day payments for ages. No company wants a government contract because they seldom get paid.
A couple of years ago, the fat cats 'forgot' to pay the military.
(Big mistake in coop prone Africa)
Serious corruption, people in government openly stealing etc.

Life goes on despite all that. It is not the end of the world, just the end of an era.

Sending you calm, wisdom and courage!

Three surgeons are discussing who makes the best patients to operate on, the first surgeon said, "Electricians are the best, everything inside is color coded."

The second surgeon says, "No, I think librarians are, everything inside them is in alphabetical order."

The third surgeon quieted his colleagues both down when he said "You're both wrong, politicians are the easiest to operate on. There's no guts, no heart, no balls, no brains, and no spine, plus, the head and the ass are interchangeable."

KFitnessdude: you said: "Note: I would ask that my fellow registered democrats please refrain from name calling, this only enrages people."

I appreciate that comment SO MUCH! I'm actually a registered Republican but I know some Democrats who seem obsessed with name calling, and spending many hours a day just looking through the media and Internet to find something that a "Right winger" said, and then trying to paint most Repubicans as "crazy right wingers" or worse.

I am one who does not like to discuss politics much because in my experience, I have rarely had a "discussion." It usually boils down to polarized name calling, emotional outbursts, sometimes escalating into rage and hate. I may be a Republican but I don't automatically agree with everything that Republicans often support.I am willing to listen to anyone's opinion and their reasons for having that opinion. Sometimes, their reasons for holding an opinion seem pretty weak too, but I can still be polite and respectful when I listen to what someone has to say. And then other times, what the person says makes perfect sense and I do contemplate it and even may change my mind on some issues.

I do resent being called a stupid moron because I question, disagree with, or try to present another side to an issue, different than what Democrats propose and support. But believe me, many times, if I even present a small indication that I think there could be another side to an issue, it has been implied that I am a stupid moron, if I was not outright called one.

But the bottom line is I truly believe most of the politicians in this country (of all parties) view their life as one big game and power is very important to them. It is all about winning, and not much about really doing what is right for this country. Unfortunately those best qualified with the highest morals and highest intellect usually have no interest in playing the game and they rarely run for office, and usually would not "play the game well" so even if they did run, they would not get elected.

Don't know why all our "government movers and shakers" do the things they do.. I really think it borders on criminal and don't know how our so-called leaders can live with themselves. There are only a handful of politicians who deliver on promises and can be trusted.

First of all - my heart goes out to all those employees depending on our "leaders" for their sustenance. It's criminal, IMO.

Second: I apologize in advance for my political naievete. I'm just an "average joe" also trying to get along inside a system which, for all intents and purposes, appears to be broken. I have opinions and wishes... and I'm sure there's plenty of defect in a lot of them, because I've simply never given politics any great proportion of my time. It never seemed like something I could affect to much of a degree. Perhaps I'd have been better served, or served better, if I had.

I agree with previous posters about punting these boobs at the next available opportunity. I don't care WHO they're running against. Maxine. Hobbes. Underdog! They've shown us what incredibly incompetent jobs they're capable of, and no amount of campaigning promising is going to overshadow the direct example they've provided us.

And here's the naive part of my response.
As a bit of background, I've always had "unpopular" or "ridiculous" notions, which garnered amusement or hostility, based upon the listener.
An example: I thought it would be pretty cool to have cars which could navigate by themselves. My concept was for magnetic strips (or some such) embedded in the roadways which a computer of some sort onboard the vehicle would read and translate, and interact with the rider/driver. I was pretty much laughed away at this. I do recognize that this particular method has plenty of impossible details. HOWEVER. This was in the days before GPS. We now have a *better* equivalent of "magnetic strips in the roads" in the form of GPS. Same idea. Different method. Was it so ridiculous?
Another example: I think it would be great to have true "autopilot." You don't have to be concerned with speed limits, one-way streets, collisions... the car calculates all those factors. I'm sure there are plenty of things wrong with this basic notion. But, as in the previous example, those details were worked out. The idea isn't faulty. Just its details. Any of this stuff should be overrideable - but available if you chose to just let the vehicle take you where you ask it to go, safely. I've already seen devices which will essentially park for you. How much further a stretch is this?

Okay, so back to my ridiculous notions about politics and government.
From my limited background, I'm under the impression that the words "by the people for the people" means that each individual was foreseen to have the political power and right to opinion and action over our daily rights and responsibilities, as conceived by our founding fathers. At the time, our ability to accomplish this was to assign a representative to speak for us in conclave. However, we now have a much more individual and less corruptible platform for that purpose.

Weren't computers supposed to make our lives easier?
Well, that's another whole topic.
However... every citizen has access to computers now. Maybe not in their homes. But there are computers in public places (such as libraries) which provide access to most anyone. And for those unable to get out, there is absentee balloting, which would still be available.
Why can't we jettison all the dead wood in the capitol and take our representation into our own hands?

There will *always* be a need for some segments of government.
There will be (probably) additional need for information-gatherers who would be legally bound to provide unbiased information for us to consider while we make our choices.
Why can't we vote as individuals on policies which affect our daily lives, and our global "persona"?
We will always need individuals to interact on our behalf with the rest of the world - it's expected, and I wouldn't feel confident that we, as individuals, could ever master the complexity of other cultures well enough to present ourselves credibly to the rest of the world.

I'm not dreaming that we would ever or *should* ever take over completely in place of government. But I think there are plenty of places where we could do so, and (I believe) should do so. I don't think we need the vast numbers of "important people" milling around in high places who succumb to lobbies and their own interests in place of their responsibility to the average citizen. Isn't that what we were supposed to be about? What happened to that? They're doing a pretty fine job of making sure their lives are well arranged.
How come we still have homeless, and needy children, education that makes us laughing stock in the rest of the world, and our basic needs are going wanting while we send bazillions of dollars supporting other countries first? (I do believe in aid to those who aid us - so long as we "aid" ourselves strong *first*).

When I (rarely) voice this opinion, it's invariably met with a veritable string of things which could/will go wrong with it, or are already wrong with its conception.
"Someone could hack the information and make our electronic votes invalid or skewed."
Yes. That might happen. I live in FL... seems to me we've already had some "issues" along those general lines. Failsafes would certainly be a necessary part of a development of this sort.
"Information provided for us to review in making decisions could be biased to sway our voting."
Ummm..... can we say, "lobbies"? Those lobbiers might find it a bit pricey to provide "financial incentive" to each person in the country, rather than campaign donations and exorbitantly expensive meals or vacations to a small group of lawmakers. hmmmm And, if information was provided ONLY from legally approved sites, with citations, with appropriate restrictions to those posting it, we're certainly no worse off than we already are. We can always read the plethora of opinion out there - we're already doing that. But the "official line" would be something delineated by strict legal parameters. Punishable, etc.
"People aren't intelligent or well-educated enough to make decisions."
Well... good information will help. Lack of education is no excuse, in any case. L-E-A-R-N. When your life and wellbeing is at stake, perhaps you're a bit more likely to attempt to learn. mm? And then, there are those who don't learn or don't care already. That's simply not likely to change. Some people might though. More people might than are currently "in the flow" with political issues now. It could be an improvement in this point in case.

Well. These are just my wild and uninformed notions. Seems not much worse than what we've already got, IMO... and maybe better. Could be better, let's say. But what do I know.

...the problem with people these days is
they've forgotten we're really just animals ...
(attributation forgotten)

We did not create the web of life; we are but a strand in it.

On topic of shut down: I think it was a big waste of time and resources to do it. What we learned now is that it is possible to interfere with government from within itself, great, but did we need to actually do that to prove we could that? Well done those were responsible for the shut down.

As for the elephant topic in the room:
This pretty much sums up the mentality this nation is heading towards; in my co-worker's words, "I'm okay with the Affordable Care Act but I think that Obamacare has got to go."

*facepalm*

Saddened that these public officials don't put the public first. I have just gotten a personal glimpse into how government works, and it's ugly. It's all about maintaining power by whatever means necessary. And don't be deceived. This is the negative side of our human character on display, and BOTH sides of the aisle, Republican and Democrat are equally guilty. I've seen how they can be self centered, self absorbed - clinging to power by kissing up to those who can keep them in power.

This is why nothing gets done. This is why we have a shutdown.

I'm a Canadian and we get most of our TV channels from the states, so I get to see a lot of the press coverage. I'd have a very hard time voting for people who would let this happen to their country.

I'm not American and I don't know all the details, maybe there is actually a reason they can't make things work?

My personal opinion is that it is a pile of politicians grandstanding and posturing to get themselves importance and press coverage.

It's hardly a "vacation" for the furloughed employees. When you have a vacation, you choose when it starts and know when it will end. Furloughed employees have to be ready to report on time to their next shift as soon as the appropriations bill is finally signed, or within four hours, whichever is later. If you work in a National Park that's 260 miles from the nearest airport, movie theater, or shopping mall, you can't do much in the way of vacationing.

Not to mention that the work doesn't stop piling up just because people aren't there to do it. There's going to be a huge backlog that *has* to be done, so some people are looking at double hours for months. Some jobs, like noxious plant or insect eradication, road maintenance, flood control, water treatment, etc, get much more difficult to do if they're not performed regularly. Some work, like disease research on animals with short lifespans, will be totally lost and take years to replace. This is going to delay a lot of answers on possible treatments for cancer, Alzheimer's, diabetes, and all sorts of rare genetic diseases.

Frankly, I think the House didn't read the law that controls shutdowns. In fact, I know they didn't, because it specifically forbids piecemeal funding like they proposed. The executive branch has no choice but to comply with that law; it's literally the manual for shutdowns. The law was written specifically to make a shutdown painful, and amended in 1982 to make it much, much more painful. Remember who was president in 1982?

We are not on the brink of Divine judgment, we are in the middle of it... ... What does this look like: "Therefore God gave them over..." (Rom :24) This is where God removes restraint. This is God sentencing a people. The wrath of abandonment... the cycle of human history. When he turns people over judicially to his wrath. Sin is the reason and sin is the result. When God gives people over the first thing that happens is a sexual revolution. (Rom 1:24). When this dominates a society we know that the wrath of God is at work" - John MacArthur

The irritating thing to me is that many of us are lower-to-middle income; yet, we (including me) elect people who, for the most part, are rich, often quite rich. Plus, all of the congressmen/women and senators are guaranteed a pension for life if they have served a minimum of five years. The bottom line is that the government shut-down does not financially hurt the people who are doing the shutting down. Even those congressmen/women and senators who say they will not take their salaries are rich enough it would have no meaningful effect on them. Well, what can we do about it? Hunker down and hope there is enough pressure put on the hold-outs from voters to get their attention, I guess.

Sppppshhhhhhhh. Obama- HA! That's a prime example of what happens when the uniformed vote. T'was the democrats that said they would have to pass the bill [healthcare act] in order to know what was in it. Really?! That's some fine logic!

As for most of the republicans- a bunch of cowardly weenies.

Those are my thoughts on the Government Shutdown.

Democracy only works when the people who lose an election are willing to accept the will of the majority. That's part of the whole concept of the "loyal opposition" -- who may disagree with a particular issue, but remain loyal to system of government.

Obama was elected POTUS not just once, but twice. Compromises were made when the healthcare legislation was passed. And the most controversial aspects of that legislation was upheld by the US Supreme Court. It's time for the opposition to be loyal and support the will of the people, even though they disagree with it.

Where I live we have kids that can't get to school because the bus can't run on a road owned by the government that's on National Park property and folks that can't visit their loved ones graves because they too are in the National Park. This shutdown has gone to far.

I am pleased that some feel like talking about this. I think one problem we face in the USA today is that too many people think we should not talk about politics. I guess it is because they do not have the confidence that they can discuss these matters without hurting people's feelings, or becoming too passionate and unpleasant.

I think we all need to talk about politics. This democracy is an experiment, after all, and if we all turn our backs on being political it will fail. And then, what's the alternative? Dictatorships, oligarchies? Criminals? the Mafia? Who will rule if the people refuse to care?

On the government shut-down: I agree it is a small minority of representatives who believe they have to take a stand, and stick to it. Unfortunately, in a democracy when there has been a vote, and your side has lost in that vote, you need to stand down. The President was re-elected and the whole health care program was greatly debated during the electioneering. The American Voters have spoken.

On a personal note, and not very important in the grand scheme of things: I am awaiting an Income Tax refund, which I will not get until the government goes back to work. Oh, poor me - ha ha ha

It's not the whole bunch of them. It's some of them, a minority who wants everything their way, and exactly their way (including things that have already been compromised on a lot--they have already had their compromises). These people (this minority of politicians who has shut down our government) will never be happy with any compromise and will continue to use dirty politics and hurt Americans as long as they are in office. They know they are hurting people and they don't care. They are doing it on purpose to try to get their way (they will hurt people to try and make the rest, the majority, cave to what they want). Just my 2 cents.

I think we should vote the whole bunch out of office during the next election. This has gone on much too long, and needs to stop. The politicians are getting paid, but not those that help keep them in office. Since the government has shut down they shouldn't be getting paid either until they clean this mess up.

Any thoughts out there?
