I lost weight with Atkins - and put it all back on. I tried a low GI diet before anyone had heard of it. That actually worked quite well but I didn't maintain it. The only thing that has really worked for me is Spark People - plus I get weighed at the surgery every month so that keeps me accountable. With SP I've lost weight more slowly (deliberately) because this time it's coming off for ever.
Many many years ago I tried Atkins and lost 60 pounds only to gain it back, so I have never tried another diet. I just eat right and exercise and I have lost 67 pounds and have been in maintenance for about 4 years with my current weight. However, I do want to lose about 15 pounds, but currently am not working on it.

What I call "diet" is simply what I choose to eat. I have never tried a so-called special "diet" such as Adkins, Paleo, Vegetarian, High-Protein, etc. My "diet" consists of 85% healthy foods: legumes, nuts and seeds, fruits, vegetables, lean meats and fish, whole grains, low-fat dairy, etc.

I don't really believe in "diets". The thought of dieting all my life actually makes me feel really depressed.
I want to maintain my weight through a combination of healthy eating and plenty of exercise but I'm not going to be a martyr either. If its a birthday, Christmas etc yeah I'm going to have whats on offer food wise and I'm not going to feel guilty about it but I will be sensible about it. I can have one slice of cake, not three. But I want to have a positive outlook to my life and not feel like I am missing out, I think its important to be able to live your life and enjoy it.
I can see myself doing something like Atkins for life because I am starch sensitive. I would just allow myself unlimited non-starchy veggies and use beans as my starch preference. I would also watch the saturated fats and stick to lean protein. Common sense can make most of these diets work.

On that thread, members were asked what different diets they have tried. My question is how many of you have lost weight and kept it off for years, or are in maintenence right now, who did it with something like Atkins, a grapefruit diet, HCG diet, or some other restrictive plan, or anything that someone might consider an extreme plan.
As I said in the other post, Weight Watchers or just counting calories and trying to make sure my diet is fairly balanced with variety including meat, dairy, fruits and veggies, and carbs is really the only method I have used as an adult, and it works for me. I have maintained my loss of over 80 pounds for many years. I am not putting down any method anybody else tries, but I would like us to share experiences about what has REALLY WORKED over the long term as information that might be helpful to members who are still hoping to lose weight and keep it off.
