Gain --- if not counting calories, and working out daily, the scale moves upwards. Even if I eat healthy foods, it moves upwards...

I have historically gradually gained weight my entire life unless I count calories. I overeat by 200 calories/day unless I weigh and track food, there's something broken in my brain or my gastrointestinal tract that my body seeks 200 extra calories that it doesn't need, and always has since I was a very small child. I am generally unaware that I'm overeating because 200 calories is like an apple. So the only way for me to maintain is to weigh and track my food for the rest of my life and weigh myself every morning for the rest of my life. I don't eat a lot of food so it's hard to say what causes this.

Generally I maintain, I'll never go back to eating the way I used to. But gradually and slowly the pounds pile on, and I have to pull back and spark for a bit

I have not reached maintenance yet.

I do know that if I become complacent I start gaining. So maintenance will be a life long struggle

Made it to my maintenance weight of 125 pounds.

Even though I have reached goal. I still don't know everything about weight loss.

In the past, it would not be "slipping" back into old patterns for me. I would absolutely know I was overeating and know it would contribute to weight gain. The biggest lie I would tell myself while doing it is "I'll do better tomorrow." But the tomorrows would always become tomorrow and soon all the weight that was lost would be gained back. But when I finally made up my mind to lose weight and keep it off forever, I fully realized that this is about calories taken in vs. calories burned. I said this in my previous response but I will say it again. If you were losing maybe one pound a week when you were losing, you can only add back 500 a day, at most, and if you eat more than 500 more than you were eating on your weight loss plan, you will GAIN weight.

I think most of us that ever got the point we were seriously overweight, also need to face the fact we have lost much of our natural sensibility about how much is too much; therefore portion and calorie control needs to be a way of life for us, and it can not stop when we get to our goal weight. One bagel with cream cheese on it can have 500 calories! One piece of pie might have even more than that! I'm not saying that we can never have bagels or pie again, but if you really want to keep the weight off after losing it, you still have to "count" the bagel and pie and everything else to make sure you stay within your maintenance allotment.

Don't know what you are referring to...
that statement wasn't directed at any particular person

I hear some obese people who get stuck and frustrated say that they are going to accept themselves at that high weight and stop trying to lose...
The question I ask myself is....then what ???
Does someone with that frame of mind give up watching themselves???
Do they still monitor what they eat ... or do they just have whatever they want???
Do they still weigh themselves from time to time???
Do they exercise on a regular basis???

I'm sure it depends on the person...
some people have a healthy/active lifestyle even when they are obese.
The rest of us live with our INNER CHILD and we give into what it wants.
Personally...for someone like ME...if I'm not mindful and trying to watch...I GAIN.

For many many years, I was a yo yo dieter. I'd lose weight, then watch the weight creep back up. That was the past. For the last several years, my weight has been pretty stable. Does it go up a few pounds ? Sure, my weight fluctuates a little bit. However, for the most part, I have kept the weight off.

A person really does have to be diligent. A mistake that I made and I'm sure many other people made was this. I used to think that once I lost the weight, I could eat whatever I wanted because my metabolism changed. Isn't that what they all say ? Once you're thin you can eat whatever you want ?

Well, that is a total misconception. If you want to take the weight off and keep it off, you have to eat right and watch your portions. Does this mean you can never eat a cupcake again ? Of course not ! but, it does mean you have to be mindful of how many cupcakes you eat.

So, I've managed to break the cycle. My weight is finally stable. I hope I've found my happy weight.

Historically, I have gained after big losses, but I think (hope) this time that I will get it into my thick head that I cannot just "eat what I want" and maintain. I believe I will always have to track and exercise, and I'm finally OK with that. It has taken a while, though. I'm not at my goal yet, but when I get there, I am not going to change my mindset of eating healthy foods (with the occasional indulgences) and keeping fit by exercising.

I hope that you are not talking about me because I am NOT obese. I am nearly 6' tall with a very large frame size and quite muscular. I am less than 20 pounds overweight at this point based on the recommendations of my physicians. I have some major things going on with my life and health which have necessitated taking a breaking from the ultra-restrictive routine I need to be on if I want to lose weight. I will get back there when the circumstances of my life allow it.

Dances: salsa (standard/LA), casino, rueda de casino, cumbia Colombiana, bachata, mambo, cha-cha-chá, merengue, reggaetón.

Currently learning: Mexican cumbia, danzón, Cuban rumba

Dances to Learn in the future: flamenco, tango Argentino, samba, belly dancing, bhangra, ballroom rumba

I seem to be able to maintain for a time, and tben slowly slowly start to gain. I know the changes have to be for life, but old thinking dies extremely hard even when health is involved.

What I do about my weight expresses how I feel about myself and my relationship with my Lord right now.

I have been maintaining for several years. I follow the same plan I was following when losing but added about 400 calories to it since I was losing a pound or less a week. My weight varies some and I do have to watch it. I think sometimes in the summer when we go out to eat, I underestimate the number of calories and over a month or so, I might find I have to cut back those 400 calories per day to get it back offf.

But this whole topic is very important. So many who lose weight never really get into the mindset that the new way of eating is "forever." All too often they fool themselves into believing once they get it off, they will somehow magically keep it off. If you are a person who ate for the wrong reasons, and enjoyed eating more than you need for optimal health and weight, then you will go right back to doing that if you don't make a plan and commit to NEVER going back to doing that.

I know I' m going to get criticized for saying this...
but when someone who is obese says they aren't going to try losing anymore, I wonder what that means.
Because for me, not watching means gaining. ..And that scares me

Historically - gain.

I have a feeling that "maintenance" for me will be more a matter of "monitoring my gains and nipping them in the bud, when the gain is 5# and not 50...."

Goal 1 - break 200 (46 pounds lost)**DONE**
Goal 2 - leave obesity behind (BMI 29.9, at 185#) **DONE**
Goal 3 - BMI = Normal (154# or less)

I've not been trying very hard for the last six months or so due to some life challenges and medical issues. The scale only creeps up a little before I drop back down again. I've lost the same 5 pounds over and over again.

As long as you weigh yourself every day and track *most* of the time, things can't get too far out of hand. I'm a big believer in weighing every day because I find cold, hard facts reassuring. I can't bury my head in the sand if I am on the scale every morning.

I can gain if I don't pay attention. I think anyone who is maintaining a weight loss will invariably gain if their calorie levels begin to increase again.

I'm finally at the maintenance stage and it scares me! I have either been dieting or not caring about my diet my whole life.

This trying to figure out calories and exercise to stay where I am is a lot more complicated than I thought it would be.
I've been tracking calories and exercise, adjusted my settings here on Spark and it seems weird, like I can eat too many calories or need to exercise less. Intellectually that makes sense, Psychologically its a mess!

I know that, for me, even maintenance is going to be a lifelong struggle.
{...and I'm nowhere near there yet...}
I have to watch what I eat and I really have to watch the portions.
When I stop trying...even though I eat healthy...I find the scale creeping up.
