I feel the key to eating out has a lot to do with intentionally choosing the healthier options on the menu and making adjustments such as replacing french fries with steamed veggies or side salads. Unfortunately, a lot of the time this means eating the same or very similiar entrees every time I eat out, such as chicken or fish. This is fine with me, because I like eating those things, but it does narrow down the options. I think a great alternative is sushi! Sometimes, I use these times as an opportunity to splurge a little bit and maybe get a burger. I love burgers and don't make them at home, so it works out for me. I'll still get a side other than french fries, though. I also try to refrain from eating pre-meal bread and apps, because that's a lot of unnecessary calories.

Eat n Park they have a smart menu where they include all the nutritional information right on the menu and chipotle because you can pick and choose what you want to include in your meal and they have tons of good options.
We eat at Chili's more often than I care to admit and they have quite a few options in the Lighter Choice Section. I usually also leave out the carb side dish and double up on the veggie to save even more calories.

Every restaurant today has low calorie options. You can also take a plate and make it lower calories by leaving off sauces, cheeses and eating one slice of sandwich bread instead of two. My favorite fast place to eat out is Chipotle Grill. I always have the salad with rice, chicken and veggies. I leave off many of the other options to save on calories. It is so tasty and I do use their salad dressing as it is a small amount. I also get a child size chips which have 7 in the bag.

Cracker Barrel Red Lobster (ask for the "Lighthouse" menu) Applebee's Village Inn has new items on its menu that are guaranteed under 500 calories
I think it really helps if you become familiar with calorie contents of basic food items, so that you can read menus wisely. If a place has a salad with some grilled meat, and you order it w/ dressing on the side (and avoid the croutons LOL) you can eat pretty healthily almost anywhere.
