I totally agree with LOVE4KITTIES! I can handle the ads on my puter, but what really gets me is when I'm on my smart phone . . . they block SP content and it's become a real hassle to get to where I want to be on the site. I'm also concerned about what the ads are tracking on my phone. It's highly invasive! I'm going to look into an ad blocker the way was mentioned. I didn't know I could do that!

Blessings,
Nancy

@AlbertJon -- LOL! I'd check the ad out closer, too, if a good looking stud were on my screen, but this character I refer to is just plain YUK (with bigger caps than I can type here)! And tuning that ad out is very hard to do -- the BELLY IS IN YOUR FACE big!

About a month or two ago, the ads got really bad. They started popping up all over and I was having to close them to look at content. They also started flashing, had scrolling content and started moving around and changing all the time. It was really annoying, to the point where I wasn't enjoying SP anymore. It also really felt invasive. I'm okay with polite ads (the ones that don't flash, don't cover content, don't pop up so you have to close them and ones where I don't feel like every single thing I enter is being tracked and I'm being targeted specifically), but these ads had really crossed the line in multiple ways. I know that the ads keep SP free, but it had just become too much and I installed an ad blocker.

I don't get ads on my desk top but I do get ads on my tablet. And they are usually the ones that say Rachel Ray used this one diet trick and she has a flat tummy. Well anyone can take a look at RR and tell that she is just as fluffy as she ever was and a flat tummy she doesn't have.

Thankfully I know how to take a screen shot on my tablet.

Made it to my maintenance weight of 125 pounds.

Even though I have reached goal. I still don't know everything about weight loss.

Well, if ad-blockers become so commonplace that companies decide it doesn't pay to advertise on free sites, the sites may not be free. On the other hand, those ads that are in little windows that scroll across the screen can be annoying, although it does not take long to X out of them. Audio ads are the most irritating sometimes, but I quickly hit the mute key on my keyboard.

I am really good at just plain tuning out most ads -- but if an attractive lady is in a bikini, for some reason, I check to see what is being advertised. LOL!

Focus. Put blinders on and you will miss the ads. Don't reward them by clicking on them.

I know that the ads are geared to what you have previously looked at on the internet, but I can't imagine or ever remember searching for anything that may have brought that lousy ad up -- yesterday, he showed up on both sides of the page at the same eye level. I just gave up and turned SP off. As for ad blockers, I am aware that they exist, however as another poster said, sometimes I do like to look at things. I did search recently for a particular sports team t-shirt and purchased a couple of them. Later in the week, I started seeing ads for the same sports team on SP, and I happened to see another t-shirt on the ad that I clicked on in order to buy it too.

Thanks for your input all!

I had ad blocking software but removed it as there are ads on other sites I might like to see.

I was getting the beachball guy and found it totally disgusting. Hope mentioning it here doesn't make it start up again.

I don't mind the ads on Spark per se, just that they move a lot and cover the content a lot lol.

I do know the ads keep the site free, it is just that there are a lot of them and other than the ad blocking software, there is no way to buy an opt out.

I would gladly pay a premium to use the site ad free, which is what some sites do.

"I think SparkPeople could do a little better in choosing more tasteful ads."

SparkPeople doesn't choose the ads. Web sites aren't like print media; they don't sell ad space directly to a company that then submits ads for its products. They sell space to a subscription service that then sells to other companies. The subscription service includes programs that look at each site user's internet history and tries to place ads that are related to other things that user has looked at. For example, a few years ago I was planning a road trip and looked at sites for motels along the route, and for at least a year afterwards I was getting Red Roof Inn ads on SparkPeople, on CNN, on Martha Stewart.com, and on any other commercial site I went to. SparkPeople never saw those ads; they never even knew that Red Roof Inn was advertising here. (And I'm sorry if you all start getting bombarded with cheap motel ads because I typed that motel's name in something you're reading!)

You get a different set of ads from anyone else. It's all based on what you read and do on the internet. Some ads go to lots of people, but there are others that only you will see. The only way SparkPeople can even find out what you're seeing is if you report it. Even then, they can't do anything about it if it's just ugly or annoying; if it's blatantly offensive or if the product is fraudulent or inappropriate, they can tell the subscription service to ban that advertiser from the site.

If the ad is for a reputable product, your best bet really is to contact the advertiser directly and tell them you hate the ad and have stopped buying the product because of it. If enough people are offended by an ad, they'll stop using it, and if a certain type of reader is offended by it, they'll make the subscription service change the algorithm that chooses who gets it. A good company doesn't want to PAY to lose customers!

I don't get ads. I use ad-blocking software. There are no banners at the tops or sides of my pages, no pop-ups, no visuals that clash with the design of the page. Sometimes I feel a little guilty because sites like SP and the small-business blogs I visit don't get ad revenue, but most of the time I'm just really happy not to have things flashing all over the screen, so I can actually SEE what the site itself provides. There is free ad-blocking software available for most browsers.

So many websites that U go on do the same thing - one ad after another. It can get annoying but it seems to be the normal thing nowadays.

No, the ad with the fellow with the huge, red stomach does not bother me. In fact, it encourages me, if anything, to not have a fat belly. Maybe it is a man-thing, but I find that photo/ad inspirational in terms of reminding me to generally eat healthy.

I guess most of us have ads on/in Net sites, TV, Radio, magazines, etc. that we like or don't like.

Thanks Coach Jen. I don't deny any advertiser to put what they want in their ads, however, seeing the gross ones on a daily basis and on every page, makes it not too pleasant to get on SP, in my opinion. Appreciate the info.

Yes, that huge belly is disgusting but not near as bad as the ads that all of the sudden appear and take over the screen. Also, the ads that appear in the articles really gets to me but I will suffer through it as the system is still free to us.

I just hope that they are making enough money to do a major upgrade to the entire program.

If you see ads you feel shouldn't be on the site, you can send an email with the details to adreport@sparkpeople.com and they can look into it from there.

Thanks!

I know I am rehashing this subject again, but does anyone else get that ad with the guy that has a reddened beach ball stomach? I am so tired of looking at disgusting and gross ads. The others don't bother me, but the gross ones seem to be there forever and often, and they are ones that your eyes are just drawn to. I think SparkPeople could do a little better in choosing more tasteful ads. And I am a member who has clicked on the ads for personal interest and to keep SP a free site.
