Alcohol's empty calories, and those of us who have to watch our weight often can't afford to squander them in this way. Plus, alcohol for many is an appetite stimulant. I've found that to be true for myself, so I just avoid it altogether.

I suspect people's mileage may vary, though.

No it's not.

There is no single "question" given by AA. For that matter, there IS no test. If you google, you can find some questionnaires that help those who aren't sure, but you show up at an AA meeting, no one "tests" you or gives you a minimum number of drinks before you're allowed in.

Now, here's one that you can find on the AA page itself.

Notice what is not on there. "If you can have one and can stop."

The only requirement for membership in AA is a desire to stop drinking. Period.

This is going to sound corny but when I was in school, and took the subway, I remember seeing this advertisement on the train. It said "If You Are Thinking You Really Need a Drink Right Now, Then You Need Help", and it was a public service announcement for a hotline number. It just always stuck in my head.

I think some people can use alcohol responsibly - even to relieve stress - and some people can't without getting addicted. We are all different. There are many sites on the internet that can help you figure out if you are an alcoholic or have a problem or potential problem with alcohol.

That said, I assume you joined SP to lose weight, and alcohol will not help you do that! I would try no alcohol for a few weeks at least and see how you feel. EXERCISE is a wonderful stress reliever and will help you reach your SP goals. Alcohol will not!

Nope I don't want alcohol to deal with stress...or any other stuff to put in my body to deal with stress... I want to feel all my anxieties and deal with them head on.. I like natural solutions for my problems... exercise first... then again ... until I can handle what has been thrown my way. Why throw a cover over it?

I completely agree with DRAGONCHILDE. Completely agree. 100%.

Sounds like you are on the way to developing a dependency on alcohol to deal with stress. Alcoholism is about dependency. Wanting it very easily turns into needing it/being dependent on it. It's a super, super slippery slope and I think that you are definitely in danger of sliding down.

Alcoholism is NOT determined by the number of drinks you have, when you drink, or any such nonsense. There's absolutely no way one person can say "If you have one and can stop, you're not an alcoholic."

Because frankly, that's bull. I know plenty of alcoholics who never touch a drop during the day, or sometimes don't even drink more than a couple times a week. There's a spectrum of alcoholics, and alcoholism is not defined by driving drunk or getting into a stupor.

Alcoholism is a dependency. There's so much more to it than that. If you find that you *need* alcohol, frankly, you're already on the way to being an alcoholic. Do you abuse alcohol? Maybe not yet. But that doesn't mean you aren't an alcoholic, or not going to be one if you don't get help.

You need to figure out why it is you need a mind-altering *drug* to deal with the stress of daily living.

No alcoholic in the world go started out because he grabbed a 12 pack and drank himself into oblivion. It almost always starts with needing to "relax" or "destress" or because "I deserve one."

When your life is destroyed by addiction? You'll learn not to be so flippant about "haha it's *just* a drink it's practically medicine." You learn the realities of the disease. Cancer doesn't start with tumors hanging off your body, and alcoholism doesn't start with week-long benders and blind drunkenness.

Our society glorifies it to the point of insanity, and frankly I'm sick of it. If you want the "heart healthy" benefits of wine, drink some grape juice. Same benefit, without the need to stress your liver and alter your state of mind.

I would always have told you that my husband wasn't "that bad" -- after all, he only had a drink or two while cooking (marinate the steak, marinate the cook, haha). Or a margarita with dinner.

I know now that's not true. Alcoholism isn't about amount. It's dependency. And it sounds to me like you're developing a dependency. If your friends are concerned enough to say something, if YOU are concerned enough to ask, that tells me there's something more than just enjoying a good beer now and again going on here.

Do you want to stop the problem before it does destroy your life? Or are you going to let a few random strangers tell you how many drinks are "okay", what times of day it's "okay" and let yourself keep sliding down that slippery slope?

There is nothing wrong with having a glass or two of wine in the evening to unwind. I think it can even be beneficial for the brain. Unfortunately it causes me to heavily snack so I try not to do more than one night a week. That's the goal anyway.

If you are drinking during the day when you feel stressed by an incident then that is the beginning of alcoholism.

Humans have used alcohol to relieve stress for a very long time. We think that originally it was used by shamans or a priest class to gain insight...but like all consciousness changing substances, the masses soon started enjoying it for less spiritual reasons.

Don't worry about it. Both of my parents were alcoholics, attended meetings, and raised me to think that the demon liquor would destroy my life if I so much as touched it to my lips.

They were wrong.

Like all things (sugar, chocolate, french fries, etc.) moderation is key. There are well known health benefits to drinking a glass or two of red wine with dinner. So, my advice would be, enjoy a bit of wine, or a good quality local beer. Don't just drink the first thing you can grab off the shelf. Learn about what makes one wine good and another...well...not so good. It'll help you enjoy it more and be less prone to just drinking to get your drunk on.

My doctor says 2 drinks a day is okay. I ask him about any health concern I have. Ask your doctor and she what he/she says. They may have a better alternative if exercise doesn't work.

That's a hard question, really. I hate the taste of alcoholic drinks, even the smell bothers me, BUT I gain comfort from chocolate, so perhaps I'm a chocoholic. Exercise doesn't change a thing, I use the exercise bike for several hrs. every day, I still need a regulated dose of chocolate every day.

Plan for tomorrow, but enjoy the heck out of today.

True, according to some studies, many people seem to have a genetic disposition to drink alcoholic beverages. However, other studies show almost as many other people have poor coping skills and can become alcoholics.

Obviously, if a person stopped at one alcoholic drink, or stopped at 2 cigarettes a day, or stopped at one piece of chocolate cake, etc, it's doubtful that health issues would surface.

I would suggest, again, that drinking alcoholic beverages as a stress-reducer may not be a good choice. However, if a person can stop at 1-2 glasses of wine or 1-2 beers, some studies indicate that drinking alcoholic beverages can actually be healthful.

Having a drink and alcoholism are two different things. Most alcoholics have a genetic disposition to the disease. If you can stop at one you are not an alcoholic.

To relieve stress. Hot bath and a good book (mental escape). Alcohol can create more stress. I'm not a drinker (at all). Spouse was - then pancreatitis (barely survived). So in my book - alcohol is not worth it.

Definitely, using alcohol as a stress-reliever can lead to alcoholism. So the debate of lifestyle (choosing to drink) and disease (alcoholism) enters in. If a person chooses to drink alcohol or overeat or do illegal drugs or gamble, etc. to relieve stress, a very dangerous journey may commence.

I like drinking beer, but seldom use it as a stress reliever. Since I know drinking beer too much, too often is a very unhealthy habit, I follow moderation. But in the past on a few occasions I have drunk beer or wine to relieve stress -- and it never solved any problems. They were still there.

I strongly recommend you find a better outlet for stress relief. Bicycling, playing tennis, volunteering at the church, helping at homeless shelters, volunteering at school, joining additional on-line groups, reading good books, etc, etc.

I wouldn't know because I am not really familiar with alcoholism. I don't know what to say to that.

I don't really drink because I already know that if I like something I have a bad habit of overdoing it. So I stay away from alcohol and other controlled substances.
