A friend of mine had the same thing...it took a few years to get her medication right but when they did the weight just melted away.

Remember to take time to enjoy the journey!

I take .75 mg of that same pill...............and it helps you to get rid of the weight. Finally, you don't feel like a slug, for one thing. I get mine checked every 5 months or so, to be sure I have the right dose!

Plan for tomorrow, but enjoy the heck out of today.

Ok DO NOT BELIEVE "even if i do everything right and no matter what won't be able to lose weight.."

That is absolutely untrue!!!!!!!!!! I find it difficult to believe a physician would actually say this to you? I hope there was just a communication breakdown or misunderstanding because... honestly, if he actually said that? It makes me mad - it's absolute crap, and if you buy into this belief, you'll defeat yourself before you even get going!

I have the same condition as you - but worse - my daily dosage is 150mcg - AND I have lost 61 pounds since January, with really no more difficulty than any other person that has set out to lose weight. Losing weight is HARD - but it is hard for really everybody that has ever tried to lose weight! Certain medical conditions do throw us some extra challenges to rise to, sure, but hypothyroidism is not a life sentence of overweight.

There's plenty of examples on these boards other than me, of individuals with hypothyroidism that lose weight just fine. Not easily - but it is NEVER easy.

The medication DOES "work right" even if you have fibre, calcium, iron etc. in your diet (you can get enough of these things from the food you eat - no need for supplements) - the things is, all these things can affect how efficiently your medication is absorbed - thus the proscription to take on an empty stomach and not eat for a couple hours. It's nothing to worry about.

Goal 1 - break 200 (46 pounds lost)**DONE**
Goal 2 - leave obesity behind (BMI 29.9, at 185#) **DONE**
Goal 3 - BMI = Normal (154# or less)

Glad you like your new doc. My theory? Just eat right, move more and quit looking at the scale! The scale can be my worst enemy! I only weigh in once a month...

He explained that I have hyperthyroidism, and I will have to take hormone meds the rest of my life. He put me on levothyroxine 50mcg. I'm kinda concerned though. It says take 2 hours before bk with 8 oz of water. And I can't have any dietary fiber, magnesium, calcium, or iron supplements while on the medication, or it won't work right. He gave me an example that I could do everything right, eat good, exercise and no matter what I do I won't be able to lose weight because of my thyroid. I also asked about bypass surgery, he said I would be just over the requirements, or even turned down. He wanted me to get my thyroid under control 1st, and see if that helps before jumping to surgery. Which I understand, I wasn't asking for the bypass surgery, just asking about it.

I'm with you on the thyroid thing. I started meds last month and feeling much better. I also found out I was anemic which will cause weight gain. I've added iron to bring it back up and I'm doing so much better.

Best to you!

Don't worry about "low thyroid" being a barrier to your weight loss efforts. Yes, low thyroid function makes it easier to put on the weight and harder to lose it *when it is untreated.* But once you get your dosage worked out, it doesn't have that much impact at all.

emoticon on finding a decent doctor.Every time I've checked to see about breast reduction, the doctor would say "lose weight". I've had these big girls since I was eleven and under a 100 LBS.Several weeks ago I saw the weight loss doc at Kasier. and he said "have you thought about breast reduction surgery?"Whoo,I change from Blue Shield to Kasier and I get a doctor who is interested. So now I have been approved for both Gas By pass surgery plus breast reduction.YIPPEE!So I know your feelings about a doctor who really listens

Listening to my concerns and not making me feel rushed are two essentials for a doctor -- I will not go back to one if I feel like I'm being rushed out the door or that the doctor didn't listen to what I had to say. I love my GYN so much that I drive 2.5 hours for my annual visit because she's so good (and I usually make it a weekend with family). I'll put up with the quick-y treatment at the walk-in clinic for a cold, etc., but I refuse to put up with it for a physical.

I know it's easy to be frustrated when the scale doesn't move, but you have to give it time and figure out what works for you on your journey.

it's really frustrating when you try so very hard and feel like NOTHING is changing.

Keep those non-scale victories in mind - loser fitting clothes, feeling better, able to be more active, healthier heart rate/BP, losing inches, etc.

It's not easy finding a good doctor. So, I'm glad you've found one you really like.

And while having a low thyroid can make it a challenge for a person to lose weight, that isn't necessarily the reason you didn't lose this week.

While a safe weekly weight loss would be 1-2 pounds per week, there will be weeks you don't lose. There will even be weeks you gain ! And that doesn't mean you're doing anything wrong. this isn't the Biggest Loser. the weight doesn't magically drop off the minute we decide we need to lose. It really could take 6-8 weeks of healthy eating and regular exercis before a pereson sees a change in the scale. And that's perfectly normal.

So, don't beat yourself up because the scale isn't moving as fast as you'd like. The scale is only one way to measure success and it's not the best. Keep track of your inches. If you're losing inches, you're making a positive change. If you can walk up stairs without getting winded, that's a positive change. If your energy increases, that's a positive change. if your blood pressure decreases, that's a HUGE positive change.

Be patient with yourself and your body.

ok I just LOVE my new doctor, I have NEVER been to a doctor that cared as much as he does! He was so easy to talk to, It wasn't like talking to any doctor I have ever been to. It was like I was talking to a friend. After going to mental health serveries, and being passed around from doctor to doctor, and having my prescriptions changed every 2 months, I got fed up with it. I heard about him, so I went to him for the 1st time 2 weeks ago to try and get my bi-polar under control. I swear he is the best doctor I have EVER been to. 1st visit he spent an hour with just me. He prescribed me medication that I can already tell that it's helping me. He also did a work up with the lab. He told me today that I am borderline diabetic, and my thyroid is low. That explains why I have been trying to lose weight with no luck, when I got weighed today I am STILL at 268 :( :( I am not happy about this at all. Not even a pound, come on! But I have just started 2 weeks ago, and joined here a week ago, but not even 1 pound? My doc says it's because my thyroid being low, so I have to take meds for it! And he spent 45 mins with me today! Finally a doc that understands, THANK GOD!
