This thread got me thinking about the money that you save when you don't eat that 3500 calories and lose a pound (just like the money people save when they don't smoke that cigarette). What is the savings per calorie that you don't eat? I'll bet you save at least $3-4 dollars in food costs for every pound you lose. Depending on what you don't eat, I'll bet it could even be significantly higher than that... I think you should pay yourself more!

Edited: Okay, I just did a quick search and it seems that (a few years ago) the least expensive foods may cost about 1/10 of a cent per calorie and costs only go up from there. So, you would save a significant amount more than $3-4 for each pound lost.

Hey if it works, why not! I used to put the money I would have paid to WW in a jar and followed the diet at home. You are right, it is always nice to have a little stash to treat ourselves when we reach a goal!

This sort of idea worked quite well for me at one point, with quitting smoking. I didn't "pay" myself exactly, instead i kept all the money i SAVED from not buying cigs, in a "reward jar." Boy did that reward jar add up fast. Makes me cringe to think how much of my $ literally went up in smoke.

I kind of wish I'd done the same thing with weight loss. One of the biggest changes I've made is stopping the fast-food-lunches... if i work out the difference in cost between my packed-lunch and the fast food lunch I would have bought, I bet i'm saving a net average of four or five bucks a day. 250 days in to my New Lifestyle, that saving adds up to.... omg round about a thousand bucks.

I'm rich!!!! lol


Goal 1 - break 200 (46 pounds lost)**DONE**
Goal 2 - leave obesity behind (BMI 29.9, at 185#) **DONE**
Goal 3 - BMI = Normal (154# or less)

I think I would pay myself for losing. If I gain that pound back and lose it, that doesn't qualify. It has to be a new pound lost

Made it to my maintenance weight of 125 pounds.

Even though I have reached goal. I still don't know everything about weight loss.

Not a bad idea, although I have to ask, what do you do when you gain a pound, then lose a pound again... give yourself a dollar for it twice? ;)

Who does not love having extra money, I have come up with a idea that will help all of us stay on track....Why not pay ourselves to loose weight. I love to shop for small little things for myself and I also love to treat myself to a nice dinner sometimes as well.
I have decided every time I loose a pound I am going to pay myself 2 dollars. That way with every five pounds i Loose I will have 10 dollars to do with what I want. I need to loose about 70 pounds so that is a total of 140 dollars I have to make for myself before spring next year. I think if we look at our goals as something that we can hold and have then it is easier to make ourselves want to reach them,
I hope this helps others and that we can all put our money where our jar is so to speak.
