So very true - I also never had weight around my belly, always my legs and tush. Now I have an 'apron" tummy.

I also feel my weight so much more since I have hit my 40's....I have been overweight since I was 14 years old, but never FELT so sluggish and rotten.

Oh well - on to the NEXT RIGHT THING! Leave the old decisions in the past and moving on.

Oh yeah, aging definetly changes your body. For me not so much the shape but stuff like cellulite & varicose veins. I've never been "thin," but the funny thing is when I was thinner 15-20 years ago I didn't have the confidence to wear clothes to compliment my body. Not that I'm super-confident now, but I am not as afraid to show off my curves & wear clothes that are way more flattering than the ones I wore 15-20 years ago! I wish I could go back in time & tell my younger self to not be so self-conscious. How does the saying go, "youth is wasted on the young?" :)

Our bodies constantly change. Pregnancy makes our rib cage expand and we can never reduce that. Menopause is a whole different animal. Our bottoms flatten out, jowls appear on the face (smiling fixes that for photos) and we are a little thicker. I weigh the same as I did before menopause (after taking off 40 pounds) but it is distributed differently.

Weight training for 20 years has kept my breasts firm and upright, same for my arms and back and posture. I can't burn fat the way I used to as aerobics are harder as we age, but walking has kept my legs toned, and with pilates and yoga, my butt is rounding a bit.

It's WORK - no doubt about it. Work that 20 and 30 year olds don't have to invest in time wise. The important thing is, I don't expect to look like a 30 year old - just a healthy, fit senior.

I got very bad about exercising. And so now even though I am about the same weight as I was when I was 35. My middle is thicker.

So I am going to get back into exercising and see if that helps.

I didn't look very good when I was in my 20's I was quite over weight and didn't have any fashion sense

Made it to my maintenance weight of 125 pounds.

Even though I have reached goal. I still don't know everything about weight loss.

Yep, after I hit my 40s, I noticed my middle got thicker. I never had midsection weight issues; most of my weight was in my rear and thighs, and now it's the opposite. My bust also increased in size after about age 45. I just got into a pair of jeans I wore in college, and while they fit, they are now tighter in the waist and looser in the legs. In my 20s and 30s, it was the opposite.

EOWYN2424,

I am in better shape now than when I was a teenager. I was an overweight teen, but not a morbidly obese one. My size 13 body was bigger than my skinny size 3-5 friends. And being a size 3 or 5 was the magic size when I was a teenager. If you were skinnier than size 3, you were called Olive Oil.

Well, I may have been an overweight teen, but I am now a physically FIT 49 year old woman. Last year, I completed a Spartan Sprint 5K obstacle course. I've run 5k off/on all year. In a week, I'm going to try my very first half marathon. Not bad for an OLD lady !!! LOL !

The point ? Growing older doesn't mean we lose our vitality. In fact, I get MORE compliments on my figure now, than I ever had in my entire life. Why ? Because I am fit. I am in better shape than woman half my age. They many be skinnier than me, but they can't do as many push ups.

When I decided I wanted to lose weight, it wasn't because I wanted to look better. That was a side bonus. If you read my Spark page, I wanted to lose weight because I wanted to be fitter and more active. Honestly, growing old and entering menopause is NOT the end of the world. It's merely the beginning of a brand new phase of our lives.

So, yes, I am going to encourage you to continue your exercise routine. Engage in some cardio, but also keep doing your strength training. I'm going to give all the woman reading this thread that advice. Don't give up strength training because you think you'll get bulky. that's a misconception. a good strength training program can add definition to your body, not make it bulky.

Of course your body changes as you age! That is normal.

Strangely, I think that I am more attractive now at 38 than I was in my 20s. I feel more attractive and think that I look better in pictures. I had a lot of undiagnosed health problems then which I've since discovered and been able to treat. It also took me a LONG time to figure out how to dress and to discover my own style since those were things that I did not learn from my mother. I think that I am more of an hourglass now than I was when I was younger, even when I was thinner.

However, I don't have any wrinkles or grey hair yet, so at some point I will reach a day when aging doesn't seem like such a good thing...but for now, I am fine with it!

Dances: salsa (standard/LA), casino, rueda de casino, cumbia Colombiana, bachata, mambo, cha-cha-chá, merengue, reggaetón.

Currently learning: Mexican cumbia, danzón, Cuban rumba

Dances to Learn in the future: flamenco, tango Argentino, samba, belly dancing, bhangra, ballroom rumba

Hi Susan,

I need to loose around 50 pounds or better...I know I will never look like I did in my 20's or 30's. But when you talk about the slow, I kind of know what you are talking about, I have had a surgery that I cannot even do Zumba or pick up anything over 25 pounds. I will always have to do low impact exercises. But Leslie Sansone is great. I wish you the best of luck. It does take so much longer when you cannot do what you once were able to do and you will get frustrated but don't let it make a quitter out of you. I know due to my setbacks I have a long road ahead, But the big picture is so much better than how I am now.

My body is worse now at age 58 - I looked real good in my 20's & 30's - even into my 40's - I had more energy then & did a lot more exercise. I am struggling to get even a half hour most days in for exercise & back in the day I could & would do 2 hours or more each day. I did a lot of step aerobics when I was younger & did so on a very high step. I have severe arthiritis now on my right side (hip & knee) mostly so some days the pain is unbearable. I have more belly fat now too which I do not like & wish it would go away.

I think if U keep up with exercise/good eating habits your whole life your body won't change too much. Some things are just going to happen like a little more belly fat or drooping thighs. Not everyone will get it because I know people who look real good for their age but U do have to work for it.

Don't sweat the small stuff!!!

I weigh 50 lbs more than I did when I was 20 years old. Even if I lose 50 pounds, I will not look exactly like I did when I was 20 years old though.

Some body changes are natural as we age.

I'm at baby steps right now trying to get the exercise thing going. I'm starting out slowly so I will maintain but I've been collecting exercise DVDs (Leslie Sansone, Denise Austin, Kathy Smith and a lot of instructors that I haven't heard of before. I have core, yoga, pilates, weight training and I'm in high hopes that I can lose the weight and get some sort of shape that is not all flab and all that loose skin that has to be removed surgically. I'm going to think positively that it can be done.

I'm 65 and was not heavy until after my (2) pregnancies in my 20s. Somewhere along the way I just let go and gained 200 pounds. I carry most of my weight at the top with a large stomach and a "front butt" (what everyone calls the weight in the lower stomach). As a result it is hard to stand for long periods of time and walk around a lot. So it has to be slow, but sure.

You body definitely changes with age. I agree, weight lifting really helps keep you younger longer. The best shape I ever was, was when I lifted heavily. I have let that go and now I have lost muscle mass, my skin droops and I have gained fat instead of muscle. I must find a way to get back to the weights!

As we age, we face big changes to our metabolism and our hormones. Estrogen is partly made by our fat cells. As we lose estrogen our bodies naturally reproduce more fat cells to substitute the loss. You'll find that fat may even distribute itself differently as you age. Your hips and thighs may get smaller, but your tummy gets bigger.

For me, when I was 20, I was the same size as I ma now. However my face was totally round, and I always looked "chubby". As I aged and lost the weight I gained after child bearing, I lost the fat in my face and neck. My face is now skinny. Go figure.

JENNILACY That is very encouraging. I've been struggling for a few years after all my kids and was wondering, can I ever get my shape back? Have to kick it into high gear! :)

My body has definitely physically changed since my early 20's. I used to be 35-25-35 at 110-115 lbs. Recently I got back down to 110 lbs and my measurements were 33-26-33. I'm not even that much older! 31 now. I'm thinking a good part of it had to do with pregnancy and the massive weight gain. I gained a good 60 lbs in my first pregnancy and a good 40 lbs in my second (after starting at a higher weight) to reach close to 180 lbs at the end of both. I'm 5'2, and I was ALL belly... my belly stretched to about a 50-60 inch circumference, no joke. I was nearly as wide as I was tall.

Thanks to strength training, I'm slowly rediscovering my old body shape. I'm 120 lbs now and my measurements are 34.5-26.5-35. I have a smaller waist than the first time I hit 120 lbs and larger, rounder bottom (I like that because it got so flat when I hit 110 lbs). I am now officially an hour glass shape rather than a rectangle, woot! My body fat % seems to be going down even though I've been basically maintaining my weight because I'm suddenly starting to see a 6 pack? Holy cow! I never thought it was possible for me.

IMO, losing lean muscle as we age has a massive effect on changes to our body as we get older. So hit those weights! I may not be able to undo the stretch marks and errmm, loose skin that came with weight gain/loss and pregnancy but I think in many ways my body is actually better than it was in my teens and twenties. I'm much more fit. I certainly didn't have the unveilings of a 6 pack then. My arms and legs are more shapely and my bottom is firmer. ;)

Usually it is a part of aging.

I don't actually take that much time to check everything about me out - I generally tend to look more outwardly than focus on me all the time.

Ladies, do you think that your body in general changes becoz you're older?

Like you would have been more attractive in your 20s as opposed to your 40s or 60s?

I've noticed that I had a better body when I was in my 20s, now I have little love handles and a tummy that I can't get rid of. I am only slightly heavier, but I've noticed that my body shape has changed, and has more problem spots.

Do you think this is becoz of natural aging or is something wrong with me and I should up the cardio and ST?
