No, I don't think that it's a boy thing. My two boys never had an issue with this especially when they were younger.

Now my youngest Son would not go in his High School bathroom he said that they were nasty and that students do a lot of stupid things in the bathrooms. He told me once that he was not the only one he knew of that would wait until they got home for #2. When he was in High School he was not bashful.

I suspect that like a lot of people who are just grossed out by public restrooms that this may be the case in your Sons reluctance to go #2, he either goes or doesn't, he's the one who has to deal with it right?

I don't think it is a "boy" thing... I raised 2 boys and I really didn't know if they used public restrooms or not. Myself don't use them,

Not a boy thing, lots of people are strange about using public bathrooms. I really don't get it--that is what the bathroom exists for. Everybody does the same things in there.

I don't know what the answer is, but it's important that he get over this, otherwise it is going to limit his life in a major way. He is going to need to poop if he goes to college, travels abroad, etc.

It's never bothered me one way or the other, but dh will avoid public places if at all possible.

I neverrrr use public restrooms unless it's extremely necessary.... but I thought it was... normal emoticon
I don't think it's a big issue... and, if he's 11 I don't think there's much you can do to convince him of using public toilets so I'd say it is better... not to worry about it...

I use to be like this OMG I was so afraid of being heard even to make number 1 I use to wait for no one to be in the restroom. I know the trick of putting toilet paper down, I think you hit a certain age where you just say I don't care what people think of me ..... or if they hear something... sometimes I'll wait for someone to use the hand dryer that usually lasts a while some people just don't like using the toilets cause they think it's dirty which I use to plaster the seat with paper..
He'll grow out of it , I know my hubby and son have no problem using a public restroom... I don't think it's a guy thing, because there are many girls like that I know I was one

This is not that unusual of a issue. My suggestion is to help him establish a routine where he "goes" at the same time everyday while he is at home. This will prevent him needing to limit activities or having to worry about getting home in time!

I have three boys and two of them can only go at home or at their grandmother's house. The other will go anywhere. I am also only able to go at home or at work. I need "one-seater" rest rooms as opposed to a line of stalls. emoticon

I forgot to mention that my son is 11 years old. I know that he accidentally got locked in a bathroom at school 3 years ago. He always take a book in the bathroom at home for something to do while waiting

He will not talk about it, so that is why I asked the Spark Community

Thanks for your response though as I now know it is not just a "boy thing"

I don't think it's a "boy"-thing. My son and husband have no problems pooping in a public restroom. I've personally, never been too comfortable about using restrooms... particularly when I was younger. I'd get "stage fright" if anyone else was in the washroom with me and not just for number 2's.

For the most part, fears can be age-appropriate in children and more often times they outgrow it. Just continue to expose him to public restrooms (not like there's much of a choice!) Keep things calm. Keep providing him with coping mechanisms and he should outgrow it. What is he afraid of, have you asked him what makes him fearful?

Maybe you could bring along a distracting toy or book to help relax him enough to go. I had to use books with my SD during potty training. It really helped!

Hi there

Probably not the greatest question but I want to know if this is a "boy thing" or what. My son will not poop in any public restroom including school. I just don't get it as I told him all the tricks of putting the paper on the water first; humming, coughing, continual flushing etc.

I am flummoxed by this (can you tell I have been waiting to use this word in a sentence) and I find sometimes it precludes him from taking part in certain activities.

I would appreciate any advice, comments.

Thanks
