whether it's illness, injury, or aging, or a desk job with a long commute, there are always obstacles that can alter our lifestyles and increase our chances of gaining weight. Life is full of changes and requires us to adjust and adapt to our new circumstance. If someone can't continue exercising at a certain level, then they will need to adjust their eating choices accordingly. And they say that what you eat and portion size, has even more of an impact than the amount of exercise someone gets. But almost everyone can do something to help themselves.

I've been able to maintain my goal weight, but it's harder now than it was when first reached that 6 years ago. I have damage in my left hip from breast cancer that spread to the bone a few years ago, making any kind of exercise that requires a lot of standing or walking impossible. I also deal with fatigue from chemo; I am on chemo long term because my cancer is stage IV.
I also have gastroparesis which was caused when I had radiation to my spine, and it damaged some of the nerves in my stomach. A lot of the "healthy" foods that normal people can eat, such as anything with a lot of fiber, whole grains, raw fruits, most veggies, beans and nuts, I cannot eat any more.
Still, I have found ways to work around those issues. I try to eat as healthfully as I can, and exercise as much as I can, not so much in hopes of prolonging my life, but to make the life I have left, (hopefully many years yet) the best quality it can be. I take it day by day, and just do the best I can each day.

I gained weight when I was put on insulin. It's not the insulin itself that is the problem but the fact that your body is now using the sugars as fuel like it's suppose to instead of sticking to your blood cells and being excreted in your urine. It's a real struggle cutting back just to stay the same. And I agree that the comment about illness has 0 calories was extremely insensitive.; until you walk a mile in my shoes....

I have rheumatoid arthritis and most of the medications for it have weight loss as a potential side effect. It also does make it harder to exercise. For me, not being able to exercise makes it very difficult for me to be motivated to eat right.
"Illness has 0 calories" is an ignorant and unkind statement. Please do not judge others when you have not experienced their lives.
Well, I think my PCOS has definitely been a factor in my life-long weight struggles. More recently, though, I had to have surgery and was laid up for 6 weeks and I gained almost 10 lbs. It is frustrating when we can't exercise, at all. But, most of my gain was from simply eating too much - boredom lead to all day grazing.

I gained weight through depression and at the time I had Autoimmune Liver Disease but didn't know. I gained over 50 pounds.
TO this day exercise is hard because I battle Fatigue and pain. However I managed to lose 23 pounds so far and went from a size 18 to a 14 in one month. I'm at a plateau but hope to get over it this time around.
I say push through it because I told myself that unless i'm dying, I'm not giving up. However we are not like normal healthy people so work at your own pace and take as many breaks as needed. Watch your diet mostly. That's where you need to be strict.

My transition into obesity first came from a desk job in a stressful environment. I was able to change that by hitting the gym 5 times a week and walking during my lunch hour.
My biggest problem cam when I injured my back and had spinal surgery. My activity level dropped dramatically. Ten years later I fell on black ice and required knee surgery. I've since learned to modify what I do and get back to a level that gets my heart pumping. Where there is a will there is a way.

Fenwaygirl18...I completely understand what you're saying. I have fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, hypothyroid, osteoarthritis & a few other minor things. There are days when I may WANT to exercise but it physically just isn't possible. I have also learned not to overdo it on the days that I can exercise. I started putting on weight with the first medication I was given for fibro 14 yrs ago. I've had it for 22 yes but took long time for diagnosis. On top of the health issues themselves causing weight gain so many meds do too. I had never weighed more than 110 lbs. we just have to do the best we can with our situation & strive to be as healthy as we can. We can do it but it's slow going & sometimes get so discouraged but can't give up.

I've had weight fluctuations over the years thanks to different medications, with some it didn't seem to matter what I ate or how much exercise I got in, weight still piled on. After having 5 steroid injections in my back over a 14 month time, with spine surgery and 8 weeks of extremely limited mobility I gained way more weight than I'm comfortable with. However, I'm now at the point where I'm looking forward hopefully since I've started Pilates and seen an amazing transformation - less pain, 20lb weight loss, more stamina, and more abilities everyday.
I put on more than 10kgs bcoz of Prednisolone! It was a godsend not to have to take it anymore! Within 1 month, I lost about 12kgs to moment I stopped taking it! I'm so thankful that I don't have to take it anymore!
I gained 80 pounds when my pituitary failed starting in 2008--I have pan-hypopituitarism. I put on a few pounds after my brain aneurysm (2004) because I was just too tired to do much in the two years it took to recover from several brain surgeries.
I also have primary hypothyroidism, Hashimoto's disease, PCOS and metabolic syndrome.
Actually, fibro is the least of my challenges. I have had a couple of days in the last few months when I couldn't move much at all, but generally if I stay active, the fibro doesn't give me much trouble unless I completely overdo things (more than 4 hours exercise/day) or am under a lot of stress.
I've gained 10 lbs, 3 separate times due to illness and medication adjustments, but have taken all the weight off in a matter of months. Don't let it get you down. Where there's a will, there's a way! Good luck to you!

Well, while I don't have chronic illness (mild arthritis, but not enough to really affect day-to-day living) weight loss/gain isn't about exercise. Exercise makes the process easier, but it's about your diet, not the exercise, when it comes to losing weight.
Even if you have trouble exercising, a healthy, reduced-calorie diet of whole foods is about the best thing you can do for weight loss, as well as your systemic issues.
You won't hear the "push through the pain" advice here, anyway; we don't subscribe to that, even for people who aren't dealing with chronic health issues!

Heather Writer, mother, wife, and breadwinner. I love to run, but running doesn't love me, so I'm switching to my low-impact bike.
I have chronic lyme and fibromyalgia and this is what has put the weight on me, it's the exercising that is the biggest problem.... and don't say push through the pain cause unless you have it you have no idea how bad it is and the exhaustion you feel... When you live with everyday pain you feel hopeless at times because it's not cause you don't want to exercise it's because your body won't let you... What illness has caused the scale numbers to go up for you?
