I think it keeps me motivated to get rid of them as soon as possible. It does stink to have to buy new ones though when you're still in the process. I try to buy on sale, or thrift to keep the cost of the in between wardrobe down. When I get to goal I will be a little more willing to spend extra on the new wardrobe. Luckily I still have some smaller clothes left from my last try at this. Just recently got back into my favorite scrub pants

I was cleaning out my closet and got rid of all my 16-18 clothing. I'm now in a size 10, and hoping to be in a size 8 soon. I will probably keep some of my size 10/12 clothes but the bigger stuff is gone forever.

I kept nearly all the clothes that became too small for me and I'm wearing most of them now. (Well, not at this moment - I'm only wearing one set of clothes now, and they're really tatty as I've been gardening.) As I become too small for my clothes I bag them up and take them to the charity shop as soon as I notice they're too big. I have enough of the slightly smaller sizes not to need to hang on to the larger stuff, and still have a few clothes to shrink into. I haven't had to buy many new clothes so I only buy things I really like - maybe next year I'll have shrunk out of everything and have to splurge out on lots of clothes.
I didn't have but one pair of size 16 pants. Gave them to a sibling when I bought a size 10 to replace them. But I still have the three pairs of 14s and nearly a dozen size 12s. I wear a 10 now and hope to be into a size 8 before year end. But in this warmer climate that I am living in now, looser clothing is easier to deal with. So I still wear the 12s mostly around the house. I wear the 10s when I have errands to do. Now that I have lost weight, tight fitting clothes don't appeal; to me. I remember squeezing into the size 12 and looking like a stuffed sausage. But I like wearing them. Now, just the opposite. When I try on 8s, I can squeeze into them, and I don't look like a stuffed sausage, but they don't feel loose enough to me to be comfortable yet. Weird how we change along our journey.

I've gone from a size 20 to a size 4. Then I went to a size 10 and am now back in a 4. I got rid of the larger sizes when I could afford to buy a smaller size.
I've decided to never again buy a larger size. If I start to out grow my clothes then it's time to refocus my diet and exercise. The last time I gained was because I quit working out. I've accepted that I HAVE to work out. I can't stop.
The refusing to go to a larger size is a promise to myself that I will continue to work out because I Want to be healthy.

Boy ... I can really relate to this thread. I struggled with the same issues for the first couple of years of my journey. It's been 6 years now, and I have only gotten rid of my largest clothes in the last year. Actually, I haven't gotten rid of them yet as they are sitting in bags waiting to go to the charity.
I originally lost 40 pounds ... then gained 35 back. Then I lost about 20 pounds ... and gained about 15 back. So I have needed some of those larger clothes.
But the last time I regained, I realized that I didn't like all those bigger clothes and had lots of clothes that I didn't wear even though they were the same size. So last winter, back down to a 40 pound lost ... I made the decision to get of the clothes that were 2 sizes too big. I would keep the things that are 1 size too big IF I like them enough to wear them again. Everything else would go. So I packed the bigger stuff away. (I haven't gotten around to donating them because of laziness -- not because I can't part with them.)

Since I've lost and gained a lot of weight in the past 45 yrs., I only got rid of the stuff that I didn't like anyway, and really only donated stuff lately because we moved. Can't afford to buy a whole new wardrobe, now, because we are retired and on fixed income. When I was young, I did the whole "new wardrobe" thing, but I was working then. Reality says to hold on to some of those clothes that one swear's to high heaven, they will "never need again"..........just sayin'.
Plan for tomorrow, but enjoy the heck out of today.

When I lost 40 pounds I knew or felt I would never go back to the old weight and some of the clothes no longer flattered my new figure so I donated them. A few things I loved I just had taken in. I lost 10 more pounds after that with 10 to go. Waiting to hit goal till I buy anything else. Have very little clothes in my closet as I didn't buy a lot at the 40 pound mark, just enough to feel good if I go out.

I haven't yet...well, not completely. I've saved a few "just in case" clothes. I have been down this road before, and while I don't want to repeat yet another yo-yo situation, that little voice in my head keeps telling to me to hang on to a few. I have ditched most of the bigger clothes, though. I donated them to Goodwill and the Salvation Army. I also gave away some to a few friends.

when the larger sized ones are literally falling off of me. I had a pair of pants that I had to roll the waist down to get them to stay on. My co-workers were laughing at me and then one day I didn't roll them down and guess what feel right down yep my pants...It was the sign that I needed to donate them.

No set time but I had been wearing clothes that were way too baggy so last weekend went through my drawers and closets and weeded out all the things that no longer fit and went through stuff that had previously been too small and restocked. Got a whole new wardrobe!

I got rid of my oversize clothes around the time of finishing my first year of college. Between walking a farther distance to each class and walking to and from the subway, I lost two pant sizes. Between the weight loss and having the same jeans since the 7th grade, I thought it would be a great way to spiff up the clothes in my closet.
Having lost 50lbs, I've gone down 4-5 sizes and while I can always find something casual to wear from things I already own, I need to get some new professional clothes. I've already consulted a tailor on resizing and it doesn't make sense cost/time wise to go that route with stuff I own now so I've decided to buy a few pieces to get me though the next couple of months. However, I find that I am having a difficult time letting go of the larger clothes. Yes, they are nice and I paid a pretty penny for them but it's more than that. I'm actually scared that I might need them again. This surprised me because I'm very type A and have never doubted that I can achieve anything I work toward. I know I will achieve my weight loss goals but this feeling of wanting to hold onto the clothes is indicative of a fear of failure. I've never really made sincere or concerted effort to lose weight before so there is no history of losing and regaining weight, however, I do see so many people, including sparkers, who have lost a lot of weight and regained all or a large portion of it back. I can't be the only one who has experienced this. Did you experience this? What made the difference and when did you finally let go of the larger clothes?
