I suspect you'll get a lot of differing viewpoints on this one! but that's good - you need to research the alternatives on your own, too.
I prefer whey protein. I'm not so keen on soy, since it's so full of anti-nutrients. I spend too much money on supplements to bind those nutrients up with soy and make them unavailable to my body. I avoid anything soy that's not fermented (doesn't matter what I *try* to avoid, we're still getting a load of soy in most foods anyway).
So, since I favor whey protein, the brand I like is Designer Whey™. The flavor is good, and although there are some with a wider variety, I'm perfectly happy with the ones I get from this brand. I usually mix mine with almond or coconut milk, or a combination thereof. The directions say water, but I prefer the slightly thicker consistency. I use more than the single scoop sometimes, too. Of course, you can use those alternate milks *with* water, too. Just depends on your tastes. I use these as meal replacements when I'm not using my Atkins shakes.
The flavors of DW™ I have right now are truly "flavors," but I believe they may also produce an unflavored version. I've seen recipes using unflavored whey (or other) protein powders.
