Why not find some pictures of average weight people to put on the fridge? We all need goals but they must be reasonable, otherwise they become too hard to achieve.

I think it's more motivating to look at pictures of friends who are thin, fit, and healthy. That way I know they're just regular people like me and don't spend all day with a personal trainer or airbrush their photos or whatever. That makes me feel like it's much more attainable than looking at models!

I have a picture of myself and my sister on my fridge because I heard this helps. It has been up there for 5 years now. I have lost about 45 # since the picture but when I look at it I feel depressed now that I think about it. I think I am going home and that it off. (Its kinda of worn now) I have magnets from trips and the ones I buy when they catch my eye plus grankids pictures ( photos and drawings) that's PLENTY !!

Motivation if it's a past pic of me when I was doing great and am doing great at the moment.

Depression if it's a past pic of me when I was doing great but am doing just awful in the eating and exercising departments now.

I'm doing great now and when I see a past pic of me, I'm like, "Oh, yeah, you will get that back!"

Confusing I know, but real.

A lot of these "tips" have been around since homer was a pup, I'm 68, and heard them all, tried most of them, that one about the photos helped nothing.............it's the same thing as someone NAGGING you all the time, it just makes you feel resentful. It might help someone who wants to lose a few lbs. to get into a wedding dress or some such "event", but it doesn't help with the long term motivation................cutesy sayings, once you read them, you don't pay attention to them anymore, etc. If you haven't got it way down in your own gut to eat less, nothing outside of yourself will help you every time you make a food choice.

Plan for tomorrow, but enjoy the heck out of today.

Those models in magazines don't even look like themselves in person. I grew up in Los Angeles and once went to a party where a very famous model was at. She looked quite different from her close up cover girl shot in the face. Her body was overly thin and did not look healthy. I would not want to look like her although she was a famous model.

I don't find another woman's body on my frig inspirational. It's her body and I am built differently than any other person as you are. I like to embrace my own body at normal weight. I keep inspirational quotes on my frig.

If we are talking about FAT pictures it is not motivational. I don't need a reminder every morning to start my day. My reminders are when I put on the clothes I will be wearing. If they fit tight I know the direction I am heading. If they feel loose I am motivated and in a better frame of mind. I would rather see my GOALS on the fridge.

I have pics all over my fridge. Mostly random family pics, some of me and the hubby, some of places we're been. The pics of myself are from 2 years ago...when i looked my best. It's the best i've ever looked and i felt so great about myself. I find those pictures to be motivating, because i am trying to get back to that weight. Every now and then, i do have a bad day and then those pictures make me a little sad. But, i'm on my way to getting back there...and that takes time....

I would never put pics up of models though. I think that would be counter-productive...and completely unrealistic. I know my body and i know i will never, ever look like a model. I would suggest putting pictures up of yourself, at a time when you felt your best, seeing those makes you realize you can look like that again.

I've been dieting off and on for around 55 yrs. now, that was one of those "tips" from back in the OLD days, never really worked for me. For one thing, after something is up on the fridge or even the wall, you fail to notice it, so it is useless by then, same as when you put up sentences that are supposed to motivate you, they all fade into nothingness. When I lost the most weight, it was because of some kind of EVENT in the future, knowing that something was coming up helped more than any photo, cutesy saying, celebrity photo, whatever. But in the end, I still wound up overeating again until the next "big thing", same as many of the rest of you. Just my opinion, folks. Just like nagging NEVER helps either........

Plan for tomorrow, but enjoy the heck out of today.

Well I don't put "weight" photos on the fridge. I do have lots of my grandkids in magnetic frames, meaningful magnets, one of my deceased brother who I occasionally "talk" to and even one nice one of my his busband and I. The assortment continues to grown and just seeing them daily makes me happy

I now have a message board with the words I am worth it. That , for me, works better than pictures. I really appreciate all the suggestions. This is a great place to learn and share. Pam

Try putting a picture of yourself when you were in better shape ip instead. I don't have one on my fridge, but I do look at old pics every once in a while and it keeps me motivated. I also have a pair of jeans neatly folded on my beside table that are a couple sizes too small, waiting patiently for me to wear them... :) On my refrigerator I have a stick-on chalkboard that has ten of my favorite motivational quotes on it, and a list of healthy snack ideas from what I have on hand.

Nope, I don't 'see' what is on the fridge after the first couple of days. So in my case it is ignored.

I would think it's better if you either put up pictures of someone you would realistically like to look like or a picture of yourself at a weight you would be happy with because you would know that you could get there rather than the unreal expectation of getting to be model thin. I think pictures can definitely be motivating, just like finding a special outfit that you hang up so you are reminded of why you do what you do, but unrealistic ones would definitely be depressing and demotivating.

Lay aside life-harming heaviness and entertain a cheerful disposition.

Depressed. I have a Before photo handy, but not pasted on the fridge. Every now and then when I need a boost of motivation, I look at the pic of my backside. But to see it every day, multiple times - waaaay depressing.

"Shame and guilt are not healthy or productive."

False motivation, as well, is not so good.

File that under #unrealisticexpectations ...

Even a picture of you down at your goal weight in, say, 2009 is not usually recommended ... because change is constant and could blow your expectations totally out of the water ...

So, file that one under #everydayisdayone ....

I will never look like a model, and I am fine with that. My motivation is making gains at the gym, lifting heavier weights, running faster or longer, feeling better. I won't but up anything at home that shames me or guilts me. Shame and guilt are not healthy or productive.

It's been known that by trying to look like one of those skinny models (which many of their pictures are airbrushed) is setting yourself up for disappointment and failure. It's even been known to cause teen girls to become anorexic. Look around you when you are at the mall or a party next time and count the number people who are THAT thin.....probably, you won't see too many.

Try to set real expectations for yourself. If pictures of other people aren't inspiring to you, try writing a message to yourself as a reminder of what your plans are and putting it on the fridge instead. Write your weight down and post it on the fridge. Try other forms of motivation like reading other's stories, making a motivational collage (instructions on SP), making and/or figuring out your calories the day before, include exercise every day, etc. Everyone is different. What may work for one, may not work for another -- try different things for motivation and find what is right for you.

Keep coming back to the message boards -- there's a whole lot of folks here who are willing to give support and encouragement! Keep going. You'll get there.

I don't have any pics on my fridge - but I do have one of those unflattering shots of myself hanging in the cupboard where the carbs are. I do have some photos of some women who are in great physical shape working out in my work out room - because I have the same muscles they do (you can just see theirs)! They inspire me...

Personally, I find pictures of me when I was at my goal weight motivating. Or the one I have when I was at my absolute fattest! It helps me know where I want to get back to and what I am avoiding. Most of those pictures in magazines are so airbrushed and photo shopped I can hardly believe they can call them pictures of "real" people.

I can see if you put up pictures of yourself. These are models that I don't know and never did. I am glad it motivates some of you but not me. I find words and motivational posters a good motivation though. On my screen saver I have the words " I am worth it."
To me that is very motivating. those words lift me up and when I want to overeat it is staring me right in the face LOL.
I have pictures of my grandchildren on the fridge and I like that because when I think of them I want to live a longer healthier life. Now that is motivation.

I think it is motivating to have pictures of anything or anyone a person finds inspiring or uplifting on the fridge or wall or wherever. I wouldn't put up anything that depressed me.

To answer the question...motivation. But. The picture on my fridge is a head shot of me at a time of my life where 2 years prior I had gone through something devastating but was on the other side of it. The picture says to me..."I got through that...I can do anything". I also have two other places in our home that I use as motivational spaces. One's on the bathroom mirror with different images, words, and phases. One of the pictures is of me just after a workout back in 2002. I do want to look like that again. The picture is to remind me of the lifestyle I had then (regular exercise, portioned clean eating).
The other space is a pin up board with mainly phases on it. There's a picture of a model on a bathroom scale. My goal is not to look like her...it's to be comfortable with whatever number the scale says or do what it takes to reach that level of comfort.

If this practice makes you feel horrible, by all means don't do it. But if you're choosing to do it, pick images that create a spark and fan the flame.

Thanks for Listenin'

I had read that if you put models, from catalogs or magazines on your fridge it would give you motivation. So I cut out 5 of the most beautiful, thin models I could find. I looked at them every day getting food out of the fridge and it depressed me. I knew that even if I lost weight I would never have that perfect body, hair and teeth. so I tore them down and through them away. that was a few years ago.
Since then I have learned a few things. Hey whats wrong with me? I am working on it and my body is getting there but I don't need a bunch of skinny models staring at me.
It just seemed to bring me down instead of boost my confidence in myself.
The same with putting my picture of the me that I was, to remind me to eat right. It only made me eat more because I figured what's the use.
Now I am older and more level headed. I have taken tools and articles from spark and elsewhere and learned a lot. I also learned I don't want to be perfect. I want to be me but a newer, thinner, healthier version.
so before you go posting and wanting to look like those thin models, imagine what their life must be like...in front of cameras and eating carrots all day.
