The need for short-term, realistic goals is an important lesson to learn. I started out about 5 and a half years ago with a goal of exercising 3 days per week, 20 minutes per day. Gradually over the years, I have increased that to a goal of 150 minutes per week (5 days per week, 30 minutes each time).

In reality, I usually exercise a little more than that ... but I don't want my goal to be a burden for me. I want it to be something that I can be sure to meet each week. Meeting it gives me a positive boost. If I were to set a much higher goal, it would be intimidating ... and I might not meet it all the time ... and it would become a source of stress for me. With a goal that I can meet each week, it's all positive.

I like the idea of having a short-term goal that is challenging, but attainable. I need that feeling of success, it keeps me motivated.

So I am reading "The Spark" ( the orange book) and I think I might of had an "Ah ha" moment!! I was reading about the Fast Break Goals and I read the you should make short term goals. I had previously set a goal that I would try to exercise 10 days in a row, but I have already failed at that. So anyway my moment.... it said that you should try to exercise 5 of the next 7 days. I don't know why but that seem to hit me like a ton of bricks!!! 10 days in a row has already not happened because that is way too long of a period for me. I am going to try 5 of 7 instead and see where that gets me. Wish me luck!! emoticon
