The need for short-term, realistic goals is an important lesson to learn. I started out about 5 and a half years ago with a goal of exercising 3 days per week, 20 minutes per day. Gradually over the years, I have increased that to a goal of 150 minutes per week (5 days per week, 30 minutes each time).
In reality, I usually exercise a little more than that ... but I don't want my goal to be a burden for me. I want it to be something that I can be sure to meet each week. Meeting it gives me a positive boost. If I were to set a much higher goal, it would be intimidating ... and I might not meet it all the time ... and it would become a source of stress for me. With a goal that I can meet each week, it's all positive.
