Thank you! You very nicely articulated what I don't like about WW that I hadn't been able to identify. Points are divorced from calories. How do you learn the calories of food if it's a point? How does that translate into life time skills for living in the real world?

I also agree with another poster who pointed out that healthy eating isn't really encouraged as long as you stay with in your points. When I tried WW, I could easily snack my way through 20 points and have no points left for a healthy dinner.

I did like that they gave back points for exercise! Meant emoticon I could snack more...

I have lost weight on WW, and it works great for many people. I have also lost weight and gotten toned by following the Body for Life program, which I love. I have done Atkins, the cabbage soup, South Beach, etc. I like Spark People because it incorporates the fitness and the nutrition. It is a lot more flexible than Body for Life, and offers so much more than diet and fitness. It offers friends!

You can lose weight on either program as long as you are dedicated to it. Personally, I like SP better because it is a much more supportive enviornment, user friendly and FREE!

I initially lost about 15 pounds on Weight Watchers, but then my loss slowed to a crawl (still had at least 25 more to go), where I would lose a pound a month or so. I got tired of paying money to lose that slowly. I think making fruits and vegetables free was a bad idea. Calories are still calories in the long run, and I ate too many of the "free" foods. I needed the hard numbers (calories) rather than the more imprecise points system. I think WW would be a good plan for maintenance, but not steady weight loss. Sometimes I wonder whether it was a marketing ploy to keep people paying longer. They are, in the end, a business. At least SP is free :D.

I won't use weight watchers as I think the frozen sweets they sell are full of junk and I will not support a company that promotes unhealthy eating for the sake of losing weight.

I tried WW for a short period of time right before I found SP, it did not work for me with the point system and it was online so there wasn't a support system that I found.. I only did it for 3 months but I didn't like the point system and I like counting calories much more.

I can do it!!

I am also doing WW and Sparkpeople, but haven't brought myself to ditch WW yet.

I've been on every diet known to man with WW about 5x and Spark is the one that worked for me. It's a lifestyle more than a diet.

I joined earlier in the week. Still finding my way around this site but so far I really like. I've been on various other sites, some free, some pay and this one is by far the most comprehensive with such a beautiful look and feel.

I've never liked the idea of food tracking, really doesn't appeal to me. But this site is making it easy and interesting to track nutrition. It's also very thrilling with automatically coordinate activity level to adjust the calorie intake.

I have a friend who is a devoted WW member. He lost a lot of weight, but his eating habits aren't healthy. I am shocked by some of the stuff he eats, and other stuff that he shuns, because of the whole "points" thing.

Since I'm not one to join "teams" that require me to show up every week and listen to motivational speeches given by other members, SP suits me just fine.

I've tired every diet plan there is, including about 5 times at WW. Besides the cost, Spark is better for me because it's a lifestyle, not just a diet.

I've done both. Many people get to and maintain a healthy weight on WW. But from **MY** experience, when you plateau WW doesn't offer much help. You can eat at the top of your range, eat at the bottom of your range, change your exercise and foods.

Spark on the other hand gives you SO much info. You can up your protein and lower your carbs. You can see that your sodium is too high, which is probably causing water weight.

you can use BOTH. There are WW teams on Spark.

I have done weight watchers numerous times over the years, always with great success when I actually work the program. However, since I have started using sparkpeople instead of WW I am very surprised at how much I love THIS program. I think the main difference that is good for me is that sparkpeople gives me real nutrition info and calorie counts, but WW uses a points system. The WW points system is very good, but it is somewhat divorced from reality. Seeing those calories add up during the day keeps me more grounded. Also, WW does not count points for fruits and most veggies which always tricked me into feeling like I could eat them with abandon, which is not good for weightloss (although much better to eat fruits/veggies than junk), and not good for learning self-control and realistic portion sizes.
What do you think?
