little bites.............how do you eat an elephant? one bite at a time.........

Matthew had the right idea........start with brainstorming......you dont have to finish in one sitting and once you have something to begin with it will go more easily.

for me i begin with an outline.......i break down what i want to say and support it with my research

it doesnt matter if you run slowly.........you are still running faster than someone on the couch!!!

I tell myself I'm going to end up doing it eventually, so I may as well start now! But it is hard, OP, good luck to you!

i look at what i need to achieve, and then i give myself a deadline, divide the work into those days until the deadline and see the amount of work that needs to be done each day.

i used to make one of those spider charts. where you brainstorm and then weed through to make paragraphs or topics throughout.
then make an outline
from there you just set aside time to research each point you will make and write one at a time.
at the end you blend it all together.
introduction and conclusion
bam. done.

I am the world worst (or is that best) procrastinator.

try treating it like a job. where you have to be there at such and such a time.

All the so called "secrets of success"will not work ... unless you do.

Sometimes it helps me to envision the end result. How will you will once you get the paper done? Accomplished? Relieved? Happy? What good will come out of you getting your paper done? Less Stress and frustration? Good luck!

You NEVER regret a workout!

For my law classes, it is really hard at times to get myself to read through an entire opinion or briefing a case. Sometimes it is just the time of day and other times I would rather do ANYTHING else than my homework. I think a lot of times, I am overthinking the assignment and trying to make it perfect right off the bat. Telling myself to just get it done without worrying about perfection has helped a lot. When I can sit down and work on something and just try to "get it done" I find I can work on it much easier and with less stress and anxiety than when I think my first draft needs to be perfect. Just tell yourself to get something down on paper, then you can go back over it. I often find that I do a better job when I go about it that way. Good luck! emoticon

It probably helps to find if there are times of day that work better for you. I'm not at Uni but I know if I want to do housework done I'll do much better in the morning but if I want to read or prepare (maybe for a talk at Church) afternoon or evening works fine for that. Gardening seems to work fine for me in an afternoon or evening as well. It may be just because I don't like housework and sometimes get overwhelmed by it as I'm also trying to declutter so I have to go at it in the mornings.
If you work at your best time it may help you to achieve more.

However, it sounds as if the whole subject matter of this assignment is overwhelming you - it's not a simple matter of getting down to the work, but you need help to understand it better. Would your tutor be understanding if you went and asked for help - now, not on the day the assignment's due in. It could be that, if they help you understand more what you're doing, they may also give you a few days' grace if they think you will be able to produce better work with a few extra days.

Planning ahead to spend time in an internet forum sounds like a really good way to procrastinate. ;)

Just do it. Once you get started, it tends to be a lot easier. Starting is the hardest part.

I'm in University and have the same problem you do. I find it helps to have a great place to study. Before I had my own house with a study room, I would often go to a quiet coffee shop to work on assignments.
Have something soothing and enjoyable while you work, such as a cup of tea or alight snack you love. It helps to feel that your work time is also your "me" time when you get your tea or fruit, etc.
Use rewards, like a night out, a hike or whatever else you enjoy to encourage you.
Also,a study buddy is so helpful. Find someone that lives close to you and who you can study with often.

I hope this helps you. Good luck!

I have to use rewards - 'if I devote 30 minutes to this, I can do __________'
it also helps to start FIRST THING on the tasks you least want to do.

I am having a horrible, horrible challenge overcoming my procrastination of my biochem of cancer paper. The class is way over my head, heavy going and my paper deadline is fast approaching.

Please help me. I'm going to go set a timer for 30 minutes, work on my reading and then check back.
