I have a purse like Bluenose63 - wear it with me - and my hands are free to do things. Great when shopping. I'd never leave the car unlocked.

A woman once took my sister-in-law's purse out of our cart when we were grocery shopping. Just walked past and plucked it out. My SIL noticed her about 10 seconds later and actually chased her down an aisle and told her to give it back. She did, but I guess we were lucky she wasn't dangerous.

I'm amazed at how people shop in the supermarket.
Some put their person (frequently opened) in the child seat of their shopping cart
and walk halfway down the aisle to get something off a shelf.

The other issue is when someone is eating out
and hangs their handbag on the back of their chair...
not a good idea.

we have a client who works for the dept of corrections. His briefcase was stolen...from a patrol car...parked on DOC property...in broad daylight! They shattered a window.

maybe it's just me, but that seems pretty bold

With all the smash and grabs going on here in my city, it amazes me that I still see the valuables left out in the open, even in a LOCKED car. Just this morning, I was walking through a parking garage and walked by a car with a purse sitting on the passenger side front seat, unzipped with what appeared to be a wallet visible. How about putting a sign on your windshield saying "Hey, come and rob me!"

One of my relatives was a cop for many years, and his advice was always to make yourself the least attractive target, instead of the easiest and most obvious.

I have to wonder where the conscience went in these people?

I have a purse that slings across my body leaving my hands free! I had my purse stolen before and it sucked having to replace all my ID.

I am always aware while at the pump and I only unlock my passenger if I need to utilize it to put things or people into my vehicle. And no, my 2005 model year car doesn't autolock or unlock when I shift. I guess the lesson in these videos: Pay attention.

Anarie, they showed at least six different security videos from gas stations where the crimes happened, so I don't think it is all that uncommon, and with the news telling about it, I'm sure more thieves will get the idea as they need fast "drug" money. The fact that they DROVE away so fast made it impossible for anyone to chase them down, like someone taking a purse out of a grocery cart in a store. This happened in about 15 seconds.

@Anarie - I think most newer cars do auto-lock when you shift to DRIVE, but I'm still tooling around in a 1998. DH's truck doesn't automatically lock. The Focus (our newest vehicle - about 6 years old) does.

Along the same lines as the poster who mentioned the grocery store - I always buckle my (closed) purse with the child seat belt through the straps in case someone wants to try to snatch it out of the cart.

Offer them what they secretly want and they of course immediately become panic-stricken. ~ Jack Kerouac

Don't most car doors lock automatically nowadays? In order for your passenger door to be unlocked, you would have to unlock it on purpose. I can't imagine that this type of crime happens all that often-- it's a slow news day so they're coming up with "crime alert" stories that aren't really all that important, IMO.

also if you do have the passenger window open and are at a stoplight, always keep your purse on the floor. That way they have to bend in further and it will be easier to drive away. My stepmother was able to start rolling up the window and he was caught. she started driving away and then opened the window. he fell out on the side of the road.

I've seen several news stories on this lately. I ALWAYS keep the passenger door locked on my car. It's just a habit.

I cannot believe how many times I see women with their backs turned, purse open in the seat of a shopping cart. I tend to push the cart with my arms through my purse handles (makes it much easier to be mindful of stepping away from the cart for 'just a second' to grab something off the shelf)

It's always a good idea to keep your purse with you when not at home. Never put it down anywhere and walk away.

The news is featuring an article this morning on "Sliders", thieves who pull up along side your car at the gas pumps, slide out the door while you are pumping gas, and take your purse off the front seat of your car. Then get back in their car and speed away. Do LOCK your car door on the passenger side & keep your purse with you. Don't leave your purse in the car to go into the gas station even if no one is at the pump, they can drive up and take it in a few seconds.
