Not having to share a bathroom with a man is quite the plus! I just realized that it has been months since I've had to sniff around the bathroom to track down and clean up a bad smell.

If I ever get married, that might have to be contingent on having separate bathrooms. :)

There really are some great things about living alone:

Aside from when you are a certain (awkward, older) age? you may have little choice ...

Edana Isobel sums it up nicely:

5. There are no distractions when you need to get things done.

8. You can be as outrageous and emotional as you want to be without self-restraint.

15. When your coupled off friends tell you horror stories of living with their partners and tell you how lucky you are that you don’t have to deal with it you feel internally good about yourself.

It would be nice to have that someone special to share my life with but living alone doesn't been you can't live life to the fullest. My work was a big reason for not being able to find that someone special but that was a choice I made. I have daily activity with many people and that is something I treasure. It is much easier to find time to do those special things for yourself as well. emoticon

Did you make someone smile today?

AKACATE, perhaps look at it as a new chapter in your life rather than a failure.
It could even be an adventure!

I live alone because I am divorced and even though I would rather live by myself than live with the person I was married to….for me, the worst part of living alone is what it represents….a failure on my part.

I am married to a Ship's Officer who is gone for 3-4 months at a time. Even after 28 years
it doesn't get easier saying the goodbye at send off.

The first days are rough. I do miss having him home to take care of all the issues and problems that arise and I don't have to call for service calls on the house.

On the other hand, gives me time with my besties, I get to hog the bed, I don't have
to cook every night - even though he helps.

I feel I have the best of both worlds.

I am always so glad when he gets home!

The only thing I can think of other than worrying about someone breaking in at night (though I live in a good neighborhood, those things can happen and I do have a security system) is becoming very ill and not having someone in the house with me.

There is one good thing about living alone -- the house doesn't get messy (unless you are the messy one!) emoticon

This thread has made me realise that I have NEVER lived alone in all of my almost 40 years.
Home, Boarding School, Student Res, Shared a flat with friends, Shared a house with co workers, and shared a couple of houses with DH and kids.
Don't know if I could do it. I sometimes dream of a flat, like a little secret love nest just for me, where I could BE ALONE sometimes, or to go on holiday on my own.
But the reality of my life won't allow for that. And who knows, maybe I will hate it.
If you live alone, enjoy it! If you don't enjoy the company!

I am an extrovert. I enjoyed living alone in my teens and 20s (left home when I was 16) but I am not enjoying it now, at least not yet.

It IS nice not to have to clean up anybody else's messes though. I forgot how lovely that could be!

I look forward to my day of having my own place. I have lived with Jo Ann for almost 5 yrs. Soon I know I will be alone. I have delt with her nasty daughters and their families and at one point I had 3 cats and 4 boxer dogs. I am ready.

I've lived alone for about 25 years now, and I love it! Like HONEYLISSABEE, I am an introvert. I do have two cats though, so I don't really consider myself to be "alone".

I WISH I lived alone. It means I'll be able to buy all "safe" (no preservatives/fake coloring) food items. There won't be Kraft Mac and Cheese next to the Organic Annie's Whole Wheat stuff. No soda or takeout taking up room in the fridge.

I don't mind cooking for myself. I have times where I am lazy, but if I'm living by myself, I'd probably do some batch cooking. Make 2-3 servings at a time minimum of some things. It's pretty much what I do now.

I'm an introvert. Living alone would be a dream come true.

I like living alone. My condo is my sanctuary. I value the peace and freedom that living alone gives. I have friends for sharing things with ... and we have a good security system and close neighbors.

One thing I don't like is having to ask people to help for chores that take 2 people -- e.g taking my car into get fixed. I have to arrange a ride with a friend, etc. And moving furniture ...

I've only been living alone for a couple of months, but I miss having someone to take care of. This is completely stupid, but nonetheless how I feel.

I got very sick a couple of weeks after my move and it was kind of scary. I started feeling strange, got very dizzy and just felt awful for about a day. I am an aneurysm survivor, so something like this is legitimately worrisome for me--the blood vessels in my brain are held together with tiny clips and those could come off at any time. I could also develop another aneurysm. I don't like the idea of dying alone and not being found for a long time. I don't think about this often, but there are times when it bothers me a lot.

Sometimes when you achieve some goal or are very excited to share a moment or success and excitedly open your house door and....boom...you realize you are alone...you call your close friends...maybe they are busy or not picking up your call...all your enthusiasm dies down and a feeling creeps in...you are alone..i would like to share a poem

In the lanes and roads, In the grains of sand ,
In the cheers of crowds , or in the silence of woods..
Sometimes, moments fly away with Blue silences..
You’re not on ground..You’re not in Air…In short..You’re not in your Senses…
And deep with in..You realize…That you are just with yourself and unforgettable frozen moments… emoticon

You want me to do something... tell me I can't do it.

I enjoy living alone as the house looks the same way when I return than it did when I left. The only opinion I need is mine! You can be lonely with a group of people so if I need company, I go to a friend's house. Whenever i'd lie to have someone to hang with, I call a friend! It's makes you very sociable! emoticon

I enjoy living alone, like the privacy and ability to do what I want when I want. Yes getting sick is bad or it's bad when you just need an extra hand at something. My friends usually step up when I need help.

I treasure my sanctuary and safe haven.
I enjoy my independence, the freedom to do what I want, when I want.
I like the privacy. If I want company they're only a phone call or a car ride away.

The big negative is when you get really sick...and you really need help...
That can be scary.

For me it is the cooking. I just cannot master the art of cooking for one. I ALWAYS make too much and end up eating the same thing for days on end. I've tried freezing portions for later but by the time I'm in the mood for it again it ends up tasting horrible out of the freezer!

For the most part, I don't mind being alone.

Sometimes it is annoying, when I can't fix something by myself.

Also, it would be nice to have someone to talk to about things that I am concerned about.

in a perfect world, we'd have homes in the same neighborhood (walking distance, or even next door to each other). DH & I could spend time together, but easily be able to have our own space without infringing on each other.

until the health dept came to condemn DH's home as a bio hazard...

Lately I have found living alone lonely. But I have been in long-term relationships and I know that there is a give and take there too so I am not sure what the solution is.

well, when I lived (semi) alone it was both a blessing and I curse that I was solely responsible for all decisions both big and small! Now I am married and sometimes it is a struggle to give up that decision making to share with someone else! Especially when I had learned to be a real penny pincher because I had to be. Now he is the main bread winner and that is nice but sometimes makes me feel as though my voice isn't as loud! lol

I've lived alone for the most part for 7 years. I don't mind it, as I'm a bit of a loner, have a very social job and have a good friend who lives down the street from me. Yes, I do tend to eat the same thing day after day, but for the most part, I like what I cook, so it's not an issue. (I grew up eating the same thing, more or less, for lunch most weeks, so I guess that I'm used to it.) I'm also pretty handy (and so is my dad), so I rarely worry about repairs, etc. though I'm pretty capable of defending myself and do live in a condo with neighbors close by. If I had a house with a yard, I'd probably get a big, sloppy mutt to have around, but I work too long of hours and have too little space for one now.

On the whole I prefer to live alone as I've had lodgers who haven't always been easy. There are times when it would be nice to have someone to share a meal with or to help in the garden but I'm happy as things are.

I've lived alone for about 30 years and really like it. I find I eat healthier at home alone than under other conditions. I've learned to make stuff for one.

I like not having to get dressed on a day off ... not having to comb my hair ... etc. I like that it doesn't matter if I am a bit messy, or choose to stay up real late reading, or whatever ... I like that freedom and would probably resent having to alter my lifestyle to suit another.

On the down side, I feel awkward with contracters/service providers around -- but not really frightened as I live in a condo. If something happened to me, someone would hear me scream. I don't think I would feel as safe if I lived alone in a single-family home. I prefer having close neighbors who are there and readily accessible in an emergency. (I live in a nice building that is a "community" of sorts.) ... but I can close the door and have my privacy.

I like living alone because I am introverted and like quiet. When I had roommates I always had to deal with everyone else being loud, and wanting to talk all of the time. I am perfectly content sitting in silence. I also like being able to watch whatever I want to watch on tv; reading a book without anyone bothering me; and being able to do craft projects without interruptions.

I dont like living alone on days when I am having pretty bad, emotional days. I want to be comforted and there is no one there (except my dog) when I get home. I also dont like to cook for myself - I do batch cook on the weekends - but I get bored of the same thing over and over and am much more inclined to grab take out rather than cook something new!

I really like cooking for myself, now I just need to master cooking extra and freezing in portion sized containers. One of the best things about living alone is not having to please other people with what I want to eat, and when!

I am me. I am who I'm meant to be.
I am my past, present and who I want to be.
I'm not anyone, I am all three.
I'm a work in progress, a destiny.
I am who I choose to be
I am me.

The repairs that need to be done....like when the smoke alarm started "chirping" which meant that before the day was through it would be hollering at me...and of course, in Florida the ceilings are 16' high!! Not me!! Had to scurry around to get a handyman that could show up in the same day. These guys are busy!!

definitely finding motivation to cook for myself - however on the positive side, I can eat whatever I want, no matter how strange it may be. If I feel like eating leftover pasta all week - so bit it since I am the only one dining.

I love living alone. If something is missing, I know who to blame for leaving it in the wrong spot. I tend to eat the same things day in and day out until I get sick of them so cooking is a breeze - I make enough for four meals and only have to cook once or twice a week. I do miss having help cleaning up after cooking, but on the flip side, if the sink is full of dirty dishes it's my own fault!

I've lived on my own for over 25 years now; though I don't consider myself "alone" because I live with two cats. I honestly cannot think of a down side. I am an introvert, so I would not do well sharing my space with another person.

My problem is I cook too much and have to eat the same stuff 4 days in a roll. (even after freezing half in meals). Another thing is worring if I have a sudden health condition no one would find me. " I've fallen and I can't get up !!" HA-HA emoticon

re: not cooking - when I lived alone, I would go for weeks eating oatmeal for either breakfast or dinner, and grits for the other meal. Because I didn't want to cook, and because I didn't want to go to the grocery.

I can totally relate to being uncomfortable with workers in your home. It is very scary. If you have a neighbor that you trust, see if they will come over for a visit. Or maybe you could call somebody. Or arrange for several friends/family members to call you during that window of time.

for me, the worst thing was hearing noises at night. Or when my dog would stare at something behind me, or stare up at top of the stairs.
that's another thing - if I was downstairs, there were always noises upstairs. When I was upstairs, I would hear noises downstairs.

there are LOTS of good things about living alone though. You can do whatever YOU want. You only have yourself to clean up after. Nobody is going to drink the last of the milk or use the last roll of TP without telling you. Nobody steals the covers on a cold night. You can enjoy some quiet time - no TV, no phone, no music, no talking. You can start a project - and actually finish it without being interrupted. Nobody is going to ask 'how many times have you seen that movie?' when you watch one of your favorite flicks for the 100th time.
