Fish were great when I was in school and didn't have time or money for other pets. Our last fish just passed on a few months ago and we have ditched the aquarium, our cat is more fun.

I like the peacefulness of an aquarium... but I wouldn't call fish "pets."

I agree, the upkeep is a real PITA. Ours is marine, 125-gallon... full of the kind of fish you're not "supposed" to keep together (it's a "damnsel" tank - LOL). We've got all sorts of electronic stuff (?) set up on it, but still end up running water over and flooding the place sometimes.

A couple of the fish do have personalities, amazingly enough. Our Royal Gramma comes out and follows me around, turns his head and watches me... it's pretty cool. The others don't interact, other than to know that when I show up food is coming.

We've had freshwater aquariums, too. I love Clown Loaches and plecos. I knew some people with Oscars which were pretty personable. They get so big though... pretty soon you can only keep the one fish!

"Pets," to me are things you can hold and have personalities. I'm a cat person... but we've had dogs I've loved too. Fish are pretty, but they're not pets!

...the problem with people these days is
they've forgotten we're really just animals ...
(attributation forgotten)

Yes. We have a large aquarium in the house and a goldfish pond in the backyard. Some of our larger goldfish are tame and will eat out of your hand.

I like fish as pets but I am scared of them. My younger brother had them a few years back when he was still living at home and they were so cute and my dogs loved to watch them swim around. But cleaning the tank...No way.

Yes. We have 2 fish tanks in our house. A 55 gallon cichlid tank in the living room and a 10gallon goldfish tank in our daughter's bedroom

No. I had them for my son as his first pet. Cleaning the tank was a monthly chore for little satisfaction from watching them swim around.

I want something I can pet and cuddle and who greets me when I come home.

yes...we used to have a 50 gallon tank full of guppies...it was the coolest thing to watch them give birth until they started eating their babies... once they got big enough to survive it was therapeutic to watch them swim.

Had a saltwater tank about 20 years ago. Love the beauty of the fish and the calming peaceful feeling when watching them. Each breed of fish has a different personality and fun to get to know. Unfortunately they were hard to keep alive even though I had a professional company come in and take care of the tank. My favorite yellow tang got sick and his color changed and it was heart breaking to me when he died. I gave up on tanks. Maybe in the future I will get another tank.

I've kept a lot of fish tanks in my life, but I finally decided that regular cleaning of the tank was one job that I always dreaded doing. Maybe someday again when I don't have a million other things to do. Love fish though!

I wouldn't consider them as being a pet, but they are fascinating to watch. I agree about having to clean the tank. I don't like doing that. Dogs, cats, birds. They have individual personalities and are my idea of pets. I guess there are others, but those may be the most common pets.

When we go south, I love snorkelling and seeing (small) colourful fish. I like looking at fish tasks in pet stores. I can't see having them as my first pick of pet - that would be my cats.
