We've driven way out of our way, too, to eat at Cracker Barrel, but the calorie counts are bad news. This morning, we drove 1/2 hour for fresh glazed donuts. Had the craving after starting this thread. We did overdo it a little but will make up for it this coming week.

I looked up naranjilla seeds and where to buy them. I saw them on Amazon for cheap and they ship from Hawaii (shouldn't be a problem), but there are many sources.

Candik, you made me laugh this morning. I never used to do this, but in planning our vacation for later this year, I have been researching all the good restaurants by where we will be, even going as far as looking at the list of restaurants from Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives as well places from The Best Thing I Ever Ate shows on Food Network. We've already picked a couple of famous BBQ places. It's certainly a plus when you are traveling to have good things to eat -- my problem is that I just need to eat them in moderation.

Alright, I admit it, I've crossed state lines for food! It's true, it's shameful, but I've done it! Once I went to Canada and planned the trip not so much to see Niagara Falls, but so I could detour to the Anchor Bar in Buffalo for wings. Once driving across country, I purposefully took a more northern route so I could get hot dogs in Chicago before swinging south for Skyline Chili. I've driven hours for good Q. (Not that chain stuff but the real off the smoker stuff!) I've even driven through 4 different states and added 15 hours to my trip just so I could have food from this little hole in the wall place in the middle of nowhere for the best bulgogi outside of Korea. I'm bad like that. Now, I'm a little wiser and a lot more saddle sore. If I have to have it, I go to my kitchen and do my best to recreate it. Except of course for the Q. For that, it's out to the yard. And yes, I've stayed up all day and all night to smoke a good brisket and some ribs on the low and slow.

We get back our mete as we measure....

We use to live about a block of so away from the best wings in the world. Recently we drove and hour each way, not counting road construction which added about a half hour each way....so I could get wings. My hubby loved their chilli but they changed their menu and no longer carry it....sure am glad they kept wings on the menu emoticon

Anarie, I didn't recognize you with the new flower! I am in Oregon, in the Willamette Valley. I have a huge terrace and this year a 400 square foot community garden plot. Tomatoes definitely grow here--mine are 6 feet tall and very hardy this summer.

Any ideas about where I might find naranjilla seeds in the US? I have friends in Ecuador who have tried to send me the fruit, but it never makes it through customs...not sure if seeds would be a problem or not...hmmmm.

I'm getting hungry! We also have driven across state lines into New Mexico to go to La Posta Restaurant in Mesilla for great Mexican food. It's a must if you ever have occasion to go that way. It's an all-day affair for us to drive there, eat and come home, but as many of you say, so worth it!

I, too, love ribs. I see so many good places that make them on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives.

If I am craving my favourite frozen yogurt at Baskin Robbins, I ride my bike there to buy a waffle cone with Maui Madness and then I ride back home. Total trip time is 10 miles which really isn't a lot but it helps relieve a bit of the guilty pleasure.

Azulvioleta, where are you in the Pacific Northwest, and do you have a patio or yard? Maracuja and naranjilla would both be pretty easy to grow. Naranjilla is a solanum, so it ought to grow anywhere tomatoes do, and I've seen passionflower in the Upper Midwest where it gets lots colder than most of the Pacific Northwest. (Did you know Seattle is actually the same hardiness zone as Central Texas?) It's probably too late for this year, but you could look into ordering seeds for next year.

As for the original question, I once rode my bicycle 20 miles in 100+ temperatures mainly to try a new bakery. I don't usually drive out of my way for *anything,* but when I'm planning a road trip I go to RoadFood.com and similar sites to make sure I don't end up eating at McDonalds in a town with other really good cheap options. If I have a choice of routes, all else being equal I'll take the one with the better food options, and I confess to having rushed or dawdled so I'll "happen" to hit a particular town at mealtime.

Well, lately I have been craving maracuya (the yellow passionfruit with orange seeds inside) but sadly I will not be going back to South America any time soon. I also crave a fruit called naranjilla, which only grows in the Amazon in Ecuador and Peru. It isn't very shelf stable, so it doesn't get exported at all.

I frequently go out of my way to pick wild mushrooms here in the Pacific Northwest...but they are worth it!

There was a tiny little shack in a tiny little town near a pretty little lake 3-1/2 hours away (7 hours round trip) from where I used to live ... and they made the *best* ribs.

Many times we drove there, grabbed a couple of take-out orders of ribs, went down to the beach to eat them, and then drove home.

It may seem like a bit of a ways to go, but you have to understand --- these were AMAZING ribs... (that it was a truly beautiful drive for most of the way didn't hurt, either)

we have some favorite places that are 'must go' when we are in the area - several in the place we've gone many times for vacation

there are a few places within an hour's drive that I'll hit IF I'm in the area at meal time

and LOTS of places that I just stay away from because I might lose control!

There's a couple in Ouray, Colorado that make the best glazed donuts that I've ever had every Saturday morning. I really don't eat donuts that often, but I told my husband the other day that we needed to plan a road trip to go up there from Arizona so I could get my fix.

To what extent have you gone to in order to get something you wanted really badly?
