I think a bit of fat is good if not important, we need protection for all those vital organs. don't stress it too much.

I have had a this roll all my life even when I was really fit. I have lost a lot with exercise but the last few inches won't go.

It maybe just loose skin where the fat was or am I kidding myself!!!

Never compare yourself to another woman. Don't do that to yourself. It totally under minds your confidence. There is only one you and from your pic you are beautiful. And I am betting Julianne Hough, is thinking someone else looks better than her. emoticon

And yes it's normal. emoticon

Even when I was 18 years old and had a BMI of 18.6 (the lower end of normal is 18.5), I could pinch an inch (maybe even a little more) on my tummy. It is completely normal.

Yes it is normal and in order to decrease the tummy it is a combination of a lot of factors as per DRAGONCHILDE post

I will say this: if I sit up straighter & suck it in I can't pinch as much. It bothers me to have the roll of fat, for me it is an indicator that I've put extra weight on. It also reminds me to sit up straight.

i live in the land of olympic athletes, cross-fit and surfing. there are women who have washboard stomachs.......but there are far more of us than there are of them. some are genetically blessed with those bodies and some starve and as people before me have pointed out most models are airbrushed. i have decided to be the healthiest, happiest me that i can be and make that my normal.

it doesnt matter if you run slowly.........you are still running faster than someone on the couch!!!

You can get to where you can't pinch an inch of fat. But that would be if you have an extremely low bmi. I'm talking really really low and that takes more discipline and determination than most of people (men or women) have. Men get there more easily just because they're designed a little different. We women tend to carry a slightly higher bmi because we nurture children. Our bodies need that "buffer" to ensure the health of children we bear or we nurse.

Also keep in mind, not all you pinch is fat. Some of it could be skin too. Check this article:

I always look at magazines, TV shows, models, etc...and feel the same way! It becomes depressing if you don't stop yourself and get a grip on reality! These women literally work on their bodies ALL DAY! It is their career. We unfortunately have lives that do not allow us to focus on ourselves ALL DAY long. We have families, children, bills to pay, full time jobs, careers, errands to run, and a million other things to take care of without a staff or personal assistant.
Add that to photoshop and you have the perfect storm of a body that sells magazines and movies!!!

What is this? Hint of a "double chin"? Bikini string cutting into her hip? She looks AMAZING and yet... you could pick her apart, couldn't you? Should she lose sleep at night worrying about how "flabby" she looked? Fear that she isn't "normal" enough because this particular camera angle and split-second in time didn't highlight her washboard abs?

No, she shouldn't. And neither should you.

So you think Julienne Hough is "normal" despite the fact that she's literally one in a million?

PS. I bet she can still pinch a skin layer at her sides. It's kind of necessary. If we were soooo tight across the middle that we couldn't pinch *anything*, we'd never be able to bend or sit.

And here's another example.

As one of the comments points out, "her real body is to die for, so why are they making her into something even SHE can't be?" Good question.

Pinch that inch and don't worry about it. We are humans made of flesh, not barbie dolls made of plastic. You are supposed to be able to pinch. Handfuls, no. Pinch, yes. Unavoidable. Natural. Normal.

I'm talking about Julienne Hough in her cardio ballroom and just dance DVDs.

You can literally see her ab muscles when she dances!

I know you can touch up photoshop pics but this is an entire DVD or rather 2!

Take a look at the picture on the right. Can't pinch an inch on this young beauty, right??

WRONG. Take a look at how she (a thin, fit, healthy young girl) ACTUALLY looks, before photoshop, in the picture on the left. Slim but I bet she could "pinch" her tummy, right? It's NOT washboard (until photoshop happens).

In other words... being able to "pinch" your tummy is - NORMAL.

It is completely normal. For woman to have belly fat. It protects their uterus and other organs

Fitness models have to go on insane cutting diets before their photo shoots. I read a blog on this site where one of the trainers was striving for this. She could only do it for six weeks. That is how long it was considered healthy.

With your kidney issues I would recommend speaking with your doctor before you try any diet.

Even those fitness models don't have abs like that.

Seriously, they have to work out hard, right before a shoot, to manipulate their bodies to look that way.

Only a very small percentage of women have the genetic ability to even look like that. It's more of a function of very low body fat percentage than anything, and even you saw them around when they're not oiled up and tensing for a shoot, you wouldn't see those kinds of abs most likely.

Pilates and mass quantities of cardio won't do it. Low body fat percentage, (perhaps too low for your body) a certain genetic combination, and real strength training will.

I think this is completely normal. Very few women have no fat on their stomach. I like KKKAREN's suggestion that you focus more on how you feel than how you look. I know it's hard to do in the society we live in, but it's very good advice!

I think you should start focusing on weather you feel good rather than if you look good. Doing so might turn things around for you. Remember those models are only a fraction of a percentage of the total women of the world.

It is normal, even thin women have it.

I think especially as women it's very hard to not have a little bit of a tummy. It can be done but it takes a LOT of work.

I can pinch like an inch or two on my tummy, I'm sure you know what I'm talking about. That roll of fat that you can pinch on your tummy.

My question is : Is it normal to have this or should we all strive for absolutely tight, flat abs?

Am I the only one with this problem? I've seen lot's of fitness models and fitness instructors with perfect washboard, flat abs? But do these people have a season, like they do stuff to get in shape before the shoot and then have less than perfect abs later.

Can someone enlighten me on this bcoz currently, I'm doing cardio like crazy in addition to doing Pilates to get that physique but I'm not even close!
