His childhood may explain his actions but it sure doesn't explain nor excuse it. I believe he deserves the punishment he got. I am glad he has no chance of parole and that justice was swiftly served for once.

So many people try an take a victim mentality based on their past. Personally, I say get over it and start making wise choices. (And I get that in some cases, this is easier said than done; some people have gone to hell and back but I so admire when they can take take extraordinarily bad situations and make it better.)

And now, I hope we never, ever hear of him again. I would love for the media to provide updates of the ladies within reason, of course. They certainly have a right to privacy as well but I certainly hope they recover and lead happy fulfilling lives. They may well be able to show that a horrible situation can be left in the past.

I think it is a coward's way of trying to justify an unjustifiable act. He deserves his place in jail and hell for that matter.

I know a couple people that had just awful upbringings / parents.
As one of them said: "I can choose to be like them or not like them. I choose to be not like them."
Both worked their tails off, pulled themselves up by their bootstraps and became loving parents and great members of society.

Shame on that Castro idiot. How dare he even try to justify his evil behavior.

There are plenty of people who have been victimized that don't commit these heinous crimes. I am so tired of this BS. We need to get tough with these animals and send a message!

No - - - that's "blame shifting." We are all accountable for our own actions.

No because everyone has some sort of sob story upbringing and yet we manage to become productive members of society.

I am just glad that his victims wont have to relive the horror of life with him in court. Although I am sure that it is always there with them

Made it to my maintenance weight of 125 pounds.

Even though I have reached goal. I still don't know everything about weight loss.

There are so many of us that are victimized as children, but it doesn't give you an excuse to victimize others. Get help and save the sob story. He got a thousand years...seems fair to me.

I was happy to see the sentencing and felt sorry for the judge who has to sit there and be "impartial" and "fair"...and, if he has any sensitivity at all in his heart, probably would have liked to throw the book at the man!!

I would say nobody on either legal team was impressed by the abuse excuse. His minimum sentence will be life plus 1000 years, and the judge could actually make it more than that. For various reasons it would have been hard to actually prove murder beyond the shadow of a doubt, which is the standard for capital murder. It would be awful for those women to go through a trial and see him acquitted on any charge, even if he still ended up with the same sentence. This way there's NO chance of him ever getting out, but there's also no chance of anyone having to hear a jury say not guilty even once.

I am sorry for anyone who has a very bad childhood. That is still no excuse for harming others. Many people I know with a bad beginnings, sought therapy and even promised to not repeat these bad things on their children. Everyone is responsible for their own actions. I have 0 sympathy for this man who robbed these women of so much of their life.

He refused to accept responsibility by saying " I plead guilty according to the terms of the deal". That is not saying I did wrong. I'm happy the women won't have to testify.

He alone is responsible for his actions and there are no mitigating circumstances for torturing women. Many people have horrible childhoods and don't rape and torture women.

he plead guilty & will never see life outside prison walls again. His victims will not have to relive their nightmare in the courtroom setting (although I'm sure it's never out of their minds).

as far as his childhood, I can't say it any better than Anne Frank did:
"How true Daddy's words were when he said: all children must look after their own upbringing. Parents can only give good advice or put them on the right paths, but the final forming of a person's character lies in their own hands."

What is your opinion of Ariel Castro's guilty plea for his role in kidnapping the three women in Cleveland? Do you think him saying he was victimized as a child should be considered in this case?
