It looks like there are two kidney-related Spark teams. Go to the orange band at the top of the page and click on Community. Then choose SparkTeams and search for "kidney" and they should pop up.

Do you have a regular check-in with your primary doctor or a nephrologist to see how you are doing? While probably not strictly necessary, having a kidney function test every year (such as the kind done with 24-hour urine collection) might help you to keep from worrying too much about this. I think that these are fairly inexpensive tests, so even if you don't have great insurance, it might be worth doing annually just for your peace of mind.

The other thing to remember is that you can live a very good and reasonably healthy life for a long time even if your kidney function is under 50%. My mother only got very sick after she fell below 20%...she started having kidney problems as a child but didn't have huge overall health issues until her mid 60s. If you take care of yourself, exercise and eat a reasonably clean diet, one kidney can last you for a long time.

Hi Daniela.....Wow, just finding out you have one kidney must have been quite life altering for you!! I very much appreciate you responding to my message. It feels kinda lonesome having a solitary kidney. I am watching my weight, eating healthy, and hoping that I can keep this little guy happy until I am an old, old, OLD lady!! How is your health, and are you on any particular diet at this point? I recently found out that monitoring GFR and creatinine levels in a person with one kidney may be somewhat different from those with two kidneys.....I try to keep up with all of the latest information to keep my kidney healthy....Here's wishing you a HEALTHY kidney and a healthy life....please, stay in touch, okay?

Thank you so much for your reply.....it was very kind of you. It's so great to know that your dad is doing so well. My doctor told me to view my operation as "having donated a kidney", so that I can deal with having lost it for no reason. I'm doing that now. I don't have any other health issues, except I'm a chronic worrier and freak out, so I have to learn to live one day at a time. So glad that your dad was able to help your mom in such a meaningful way!! Please, keep in touch....and good luck to you on your weight loss journey!! emoticon

My father just donated a kidney to my mother in March. It was amazing to see how his remaining kidney stepped up to the plate and started working harder to compensate! His total kidney function is in the high 80s even with just one kidney. My mother, who now has three kidneys, went from about 16% function to being in the 60s and 70s.

Assuming you don't have other health issues, you could be just fine for the rest of your life with only one kidney as long as you avoid accidents.

Basically, my father has been told to watch his weight and follow a Mediterranean diet, but other than that, he should be able to live a normal life.

Hi. I am a Sparkpeople member, and I absolutely love it. I love having a place to go to be accountable for my weight and my health. It's up to ME to take care of ME, but it sure helps having others out there in the world who are on your same journey. I was wondering if anyone out there happens to be living with one kidney. I had my left kidney removed about 3 1/2 years ago, when the doctors mistakenly thought I had a tumor in it. Turns out it was a perfectly healthy kidney, which I am grateful for, but, at the same time, it sucked losing a perfectly healthy kidney emoticon I didn't notice any kidney groups in here, so I was just wondering. It would sure be nice to be able to talk to someone with a solitary kidney, to share health tips, eating tips, etc. with. Hoping I hear from someone.....LOVE SPARKPEOPLE!! emoticon
