I don't have any experience with the master cleanse. I do know a person that swears by it though. I respect that person's opinion and experience. But I do have to note that he doesn't consistently maintain a healthy weight. He loses weight and gains it back very easily. I know another person that fasts to cleanse. Same with him. He's a great guy and I respect his experience. But watching his weight go up and down turns me off to the practice he praises.

A cleanse is unnecessary unless you are having a colonoscopy

No one's being rude. :) I'm just a bit hater of the cleanse. Any antagonism you may have detected is towards that... not you.

Thanks for your input. No, I don't like sitting in the ER. I don't think my body is a toilet. Do you like being rude to an innocent person just inquiring about the MC? Chillax, Ajax.

DIDS70--

There are foods that are not helpful to weight loss but are not necessarily harmful to people without weight issues. I recently moved into a place where some relatives had been living, and they left most of their non-perishable foods because they didn't want to move them. I did the kitchen cleanse, and I donated things like canned chili, pudding mixes and canned milk, fruit in light syrup, applesauce, flavored oatmeal, and baking mixes. None of those things are unhealthy for everyone; they're just not things that *I* should be eating. (And I also gave away things that are perfectly healthy but I don't like-- these people had like 15 cans of sardines!-- and things that are perfectly healthy but that I tend to overeat, like whole-grain crackers.)

Absolutely not.

Your body isn't a toilet, and it can't be flushed. Detoxifying isn't something you're supposed to do twice a year like an oil change in your car. It's something your liver and body already do all the time, and it doesn't need your help. If you want to help it? Stop putting crap in your body it needs to detoxify.

People have landed themselves in the *hospital* because of this crap. The master cleanse is based on crap science, and doesn't work, and is absolutely dangerous. It can cause liver damage, fatigue, headaches, aches, and pains. Absolutely you'll get nutritional shortages. Do you LIKE sitting in the ER waiting room?

Skip it. There are no shortcuts. Just hard work.

I say SCAM. Like others have said the human body is miraculous in taking care of you. A cleanse is not all bad, but can be done by using common dietary items and liquids. Ask anyone who has had a colonoscopy and had to do a cleanse. It's a one day procedure with an enema or pills. Just eat and drink healthfully. Don't buy into that myth that meat is stuck n your colon for years either - total bunk.

If I want to "cleanse" I drink hot water and apple cider vinegar and eat very clean for a few days. No carbs, sugars or red or processed meats. No alcohol.

i agree for the most part that "cleanses" don't work. I only have one facetious question relating to the idea of Anarie-- I agree that "cleansing" your kitchen is an awesome idea. However you are putting what you consider unhealthy foods (unopened) in a box and giving them away. If it is unhealthy for you, wouldn't it also be unhealthy for anyone you are giving it to?
I tend to throw it all away opened or not. Though it may seem a waste, i don't want anyone else falling in the same trap I am in.

Drinking lemonade with cayenne is perfectly safe. Drinking ONLY lemonade without eating is dangerous. (The saltwater part is new to me and sounds like a VERY BAD idea-- drinking saltwater is the opposite of cleansing!)

As others have said, there's no need for a "cleanse." That's what your liver and kidneys do, and trying to force them is like putting a high-pressure tire pump in your mouth to try to force your lungs to do their job better-- you're much more likely to damage them than to help them.

The best "cleanse" is a kitchen cleanse. Just get a plastic garbage bag and a cardboard box. Take everything out of your fridge and pantry, and for each item ask yourself, "Will this make me healthier?" If the answer is no and the package is open or close to its expiry date, drop it in the bag. If the package is still sealed and the food is usable, put it in the cardboard box. When everything is sorted, drag the bag to the dumpster, wipe out the fridge and cupboards, put away the healthy food, and then take the cardboard box to the nearest food bank. On your way home, stop at the library and check out a "healthy cooking" cookbook or two, with great photos, pick one new recipe, and use the recipe as your shopping list for a quick stop at a good grocery store.

The only real way to "cleanse" is to stop putting unhealthy food into your body, and then give your body the fiber and antioxidants it needs as cleaning supplies. That means fruit, veggies, and whole grains. Then give it the building materials it needs to do any repairs-- lean meat or vegetarian protein like beans, lowfat dairy, and small amounts of healthy fats like nuts, avocados, or olive oil. That's it. If you feel the psychological need for the cleanse and you want to drink the Master Cleanse lemonade, it's not going to hurt you, but only healthy eating is going to actually cleanse you.

I have done it in the past, but only made it to day 4. I didn't do the salt water flush with it. I will say though I felt awesome after even just those few days. I had absolutely NO cravings after it was done and my body felt amazing. Fasting can help with a clear mind and focus too, so there are other reasons to cleanse. For me, I wanted to jump start a new lean meal plan and re-energize my body. I achieved what I wanted to do on it.

Cheers,

FitGlamGirl

Any "cleanse" is a "hoax" and unnecessary. Our bodies have multiple organs that do the very job "cleanses" claim to do. There is no scientific evidence to support the claims that any of these products/diets make about getting rid of toxins.

If you want to reduce the number of toxins in your body, eat clean and healthy, drink plenty of water... your organs will do the rest.

Anyone who says you need to "cleanse" twice a year are uneducated on the subject or are easily mislead by pseudoscience.

"Toning" is marketing muscles to women who are afraid if they pick up a barbell, they'll leave the gym looking like She-Hulk. It doesn't happen, what does happen is you get results. Lifting Barbie weights does nothing but waste time.

...is disgusting. This elixer is the worst. Anyone ever try this, is it safe or is it all a hoax? I read it can deteriorate lean muscle. 50% say its bad, the other half say we're supposed to cleanse twice a year. I don't know what to think of it anymore.

The salt water flush makes me nervous too, because that much sodium daily is kind've scarey.
