I have a pool but wouldn't know where to start on aerobics.

I've never done water aerobics--I swim laps. But, while I'm swimming, there's often a water aerobics class going on. They look like they are having a great time in those classes! There are people of all shapes, sizes and ages that take water aerobics and/or swim. So, there is really no reason to feel self-conscious. Just have fun!

You do not need to know anyone when you go to class as you will be so focussed on the exercises, you will not notice the hour fly by.

You will love it!

It's been a while for me as well, but I really enjoyed it. You get a great workout, but with a lot less pain. You will feel it the next day.

I am doing water exercises in my own pool, but I would love to be doing aerobics again. I think I will look for a local class.

Thanks for the idea. And I hope you enjoy.

it's been a LONG time, but I loved the classes when I took them.

I do remember one thing very well - do NOT stand on your toes! I had a really bad habit of not landing on a flat foot (as I would in a regular class), and my calves would be so sore that I couldn't walk without pain for days. Just keep reminding yourself (and your MIL) to put your entire foot on the bottom of the pool.

You are not the center of attention. Nobody cares how you look in a swimming suit. Just put the dang thing on and get in the water.

Honestly, when you are overweight, it is just as obvious in a swimming suit as it is with clothes on. It's probably not a secret to anybody that you know.

I started swimming again when I weighed 300 pounds. If I can do it at that weight, then you can do it at 214.

Dances: salsa (standard/LA), casino, rueda de casino, cumbia Colombiana, bachata, mambo, cha-cha-chá, merengue, reggaetón.

Currently learning: Mexican cumbia, danzón, Cuban rumba

Dances to Learn in the future: flamenco, tango Argentino, samba, belly dancing, bhangra, ballroom rumba

I was reading that water aerobics can burn up to 790 calories in an hour! That would be awesome!! I would love to burn that many calories every day!

I love it and I am hooked. I like both deep water and regular aerobics--it's such a good workout without sweating and so great for your joints and muscles!! I find that I enjoy more and get a better workout if I don't know anyone/or best friend. So give it a try for you have nothing to lose but flab.

I did my best today, tomorrow I will do even better.

WOW..I am envious of you. I did water aerobics and I loved it. It is a real good workout. Go with an open mind. I am sure that you will do fine. I would do it again in a heart beat if we had some one teaching it.

I think I did it in college. It was alright. My gym offers several water exercise options, including Aqua Zumba, which has been hugely popular.

It's been quite a few years since I did this, but I do recall enjoying it quite a bit. Firstly, once you're in the water, the water offers a lot more in the way of privacy/coverage than you get doing land-aerobics. Secondly, lower impact, so much easier on the knees, so much less bouncing of things you wish wouldn't bounce! Thirdly, you don't get all sticky-sweaty because - you're in the water! Keeps you nice and cool. And it was just kind of fun, bouncing and jumping and splashing around in the pool.

Yeah, I'd do it again, but, I don't have a community swimming pool anyplace close enough to me anymore.

I have decided to try water aerobics. I am going to sign up tomorrow and am a little apprehensive about it. I really hope I don't see anyone I know, other than my mother in law who I invited to join with me. I haven't put on a swimsuit for over a year!! I love being in the water and am hoping this will be an exercise I will actually stick to. Has anyone out there had any experience with this kind of workout???

I can't wait to try it!!
