I don't shop the farmer's market because they don't have anything that's grown locally!!

I didn't make it to the market this morning, but last Sunday I got beets, 2 varieties of heirloom tomatoes, squash, figs, fresh goat cheese and a bottle of peach balsamic vinegar.

Oh how I miss our Farmer's Markets this time of year! I live in the Winter Vegetable Capital of the World, but that does me little good through the long hot summer. I have to settle for grocery store produce and an occasional outing to the Oriental market.

Besides the typical veggies, I love picking fresh green chiles and jalepenos at one of our local farms. At another farmer's market, we have a gal that grows all kinds of sprouts. She cuts them for you when you buy them and charges by the bag size (sandwich bag, quart bag or gallon bag). They are so delicious! She runs out fast, so you have to get there early. Also, at the same market, there is another lady who sells fresh mesquite flour tortillas that are delicious.

I live in one of the best agricultural areas in the world. So, our farmers' markets are filled with beautiful fruits, veggies, and herbs.

Of course, we also have our share of delicious homemade goods sold there. There's an elderly couple that sells their pickles and jellies there. I cannot resist their spicy sweet pickles. AND there's a family that sells baked goods...My husband always buys their oatmeal cookies (to my chagrin).

Because of the heat wave, I've noticed a shortage of decent heads of lettuce whenever I go to the farmers markets. One week, I was really bummed that there was no lettuce. However, I was talking to one of the vendors and I asked them about a Japanese veggie they had called mizuna. They said it could be used in a salad in place of lettuce. So, I decided to give it a try.

And it wasn't bad. I liked the flavor. As others have said, it's always fun to try new fruits or veggies you see at the farmer's stands. Today, I treated myself to a bag of cherries. they're conventional, but I do love fresh cherries.

one of the fun things about farmer markets is being brave enough to
try veggies you've never had.
chayote, patty pan squash, fiddlehead greens, tomatillos

We have fruit! I live in a heavily agricultural "orchard" area - right now it is cherries, cherries and more cherries (omg how I love cherries) and also apricots, and just over the last few days the first of the peach signs are going up at the farm-gates. Raspberries off my own bushes, and blueberries from a local guy that converted a few acres into a berry field. I also hit up the local Friday night farm market for some kale, the biggest-reddest radishes I've ever seen, peppers and cucumbers and zuchinni.

Gonna be living large with fresh-produce luxury this weekend!

Today was my usual trip to the local farmers market. My favorite organic stand was not there this week. I passed up the maple bacon flavored popcorn, and the friend mini doughnuts. My finds were herbs for a $1 ( i got a basil, a dill and a chive), some shiny eggplant, a huge cabbage for $2, some heirloom tomatoes and some broccoli for tonight's dinner.

What's growing local where you live?
