This was a health inspector that was telling you the filthiest place in the fast food business and it showed micky d's, you could tell it was that franchise even though they tried to blur things out.
I find Dr Oz has some good information at times, they can't just say fast food places are filthy like that, we all know what we see when we go in them an can only imagine what the kitchens look like, they showed the health inspector actually taking samples of the fountains... it was really gross

I worked with a guy who quit his job as assistant manager at a KFC because the manager told him to soak some out of date raw chicken in a mixture of bleach and water. When he refused, he was told he could do as he was told or leave...so he left. Keep in mind, stories like that are more about the individual manager and location, not usually indicative of the entire chain.

I've worked in several chain restaurants, but my only 'fast food' experience was Del Taco. Clean, clean, clean, clean. Which is why cheapo places like Taco Bell just about put Del Taco out of business. Del Taco cannot compete at the price level, but the quality is excellent! I still eat at Del Taco when I'm lucky enough to find one (there are only 3 in GA). Everything they serve is made in the store - chips are made fresh every day. "Refried beans" are made by cooking dried pintos in a pressure cooker and mashing them with an industrial mixer. The only thing they do not make on site is the salsa.

Ever read the label on ice cream? Many many brands contain propylene glycol (amongst other chemicals) in them. There are too many other good REAL foods in the world, I don't need to be eating anti-freeze!

The few times I caught the Dr. Oz show I was not impressed.

I should truly be dead by now because I eat at McDonald's once or twice a week (with no intent to stop). At home I drink a cup or two of coffee and a can or two of that poison (oh I mean diet soda) every day. I don't really read the ingredients of packaged foods much other than to see how many calories per serving and to get a general idea what nutrients, vitamins, etc. are in it.

But I am 54, take no medications at all (which my doctor says is RARE for someone my age). I don't have any issues, no high blood pressure, and I'm at normal healthy weight. How can this be? I know I probably sound like a smoker who defends it because his Grandpa and smoked four packs a day his whole life, and is well into his 90's (the exception not the rule) but no, I really believe that it is pointless to worry about every little thing they put in our food to preserve or enhance the taste, or whatever. I actually make lower fat choices at McDonald's. Few will defend the fast food industry but I applaud them in a few areas, such as providing nutrition in formation, and offering options such as salads, low fat dressings, grilled chicken, etc. Now McD's even offers Eggwhite McMuffins. Most who go there still choose the most unhlealthy options but I appreciate they have what I consider healthier, lower calorie options. I especially love the 170 calorie vanilla ice cream cone for 49 cents! (I should add that I don't smoke and very rarely drink alcohol as I do think those contribute far more to bad health than the preservatives mentioned in typical packaged or fast foods)

Dr. Oz...... enuff said. If it makes for good entertainment and will keep his viewers glued over the next commercial break...

He's about as trust worthy as a source of health information as the National Enquirer is a reliable source of world events.

Okay, I haven't eaten at McDonalds in five or six years and don't intend to, and I don't think anyone else should... But be fair. Dr. Oz is your source of information? Really?

Yes, there may very well be propylene glycol in tiny amounts in various types of food. It's on the ingredient list for Dr. Pepper, and it's pretty common in frozen foods. So? It's not harmful. The only suspected death from propylene glycol was a woman who drank two gallons of it to commit suicide, and it's not entirely clear that the propylene glycol is what did it. They don't know the lethal dose for humans because no one else has ever died from it, but in rats it's 30g per kilo. That's about the same as the lethal dose from sucrose-- table sugar. There's also salt on the fries, and just a tablespoon or two of that will kill you. The sugar and salt in a hamburger bun are much closer to dangerous amounts than the "antifreeze" on the lettuce.

As for the drink dispensers, they're going to be much cleaner at a place like McDonald's than at an independent restaurant or, god forbid, a convenience store. McDonald's has them on their cleaning checklist, and the franchise owner can lose the business if the checklist isn't followed. At your neighborhood restaurant, they get cleaned if and when somebody thinks of it or a customer complains. If your local TV news gives health inspectors' reports, notice how often they report "pink mold in the drink dispenser," and look where it's happeneing. Major chain restaurants almost never get that violation.

I'm not saying anyone should eat at McDonalds-- but skip it because it's fatty, low-quality food, not because Oz wants to scare you into thinking it's dangerous and other places are safe.

Guess Mickey D's didn't send Mehmet his little envelope, huh?

They also said that ice machines that give out ice from the top are dirty because it is a moist place and it holds mold.... and your right Azul they also said that a lot of the things hold 17 ingredients that would shock you.
That milkshakes and french fries have beef flavoring in them yuck! I mean not that I thought fast food eating was ever healthy, but I never thought it was quite that disgusting either....
Just another reason why eating home and cooking your own food is so much better....

The sweet tea at Mc Donald's they do not always clean the holding canister, it will have a bitter taste, there is a thick layer of sludge in the bottom when some of the places do not clean it out!!!!!

Of course the 7-day-old fries look fine--they contain very few natural ingredients and are composed mostly of chemicals. You would think that they would include potatoes, oil and salt...but no, McDonald's fries, for example, have SEVENTEEN ingredients.

Lots of fast-food fries even contain dairy and soy--a bad allergy risk for people who assume that the fries contain, you know, potatoes.

Fast food places around here all have ice machines that dispense out the top and there's no chance of contamination, and all self serve on the ice and drinks. As for chemicals, nothing would surprise me!

Also why I've gone to cooking from scratch mostly. Some groceries do not allow that type of thing ... i.e., Trader Joe's does not stock any food that contains GMOs, they don't do preservatives, etc. Fast food places ... pretty much a thing of the past for me ...

Yes, propylene glycol is in many fast food and packaged food items. You will find this in products like muffin mixes. A little supposedly won't hurt you, but people who eat a lot of junk could potentially be consuming quite a bit. Yes, too much propylene glycol will kill you.

One of the many reasons why I raise a lot of my own food and cook from scratch...

I just saw something on the Dr. Oz show that really grossed me out they put a small concentration of antifreeze in a lot of the foods, even lettuce! I guess it's some kind of preservative but omg that is gross!
They also said that the dirtiest part of your meal is the fountain drink and ice as a lot don't get cleaned well and instead of using the ice scoop they go in with the cup and their hands hit the ice and someone gave Hep A to hundreds of customers that way. No more diet soda's from the fast food place unless in a bottle and just when you think your picking a good choice with the chicken? noooooooooooooooooooooope, they are adding extra butter or oil to it for it to stay moist and those grilled chicken sandwiches might have chemicals to make that grilled look.
We barely go to fast food places I'd rather cook myself, but sometimes you have to when your out of town and now I'm thinking twice about what I order.
They showed 7 day old fries near new fries and you couldn't tell the difference!
Next time we have to go we'll be getting our drinks elsewhere , no lettuce, no fries and no grilled chicken.....

Starting to like the new me!
Waiting for my garden to come to life!
