My husband and I were just told by our reproductive dr that YES IVF was indeed our only option....My OBGYN told us that in December 2012 and we wanted to get a second opinion about it...I have struggled with weight issues for years and have lost 50 pounds total sine 2009...Im going for another 65 pound loss and hope things work out in our favor and IVF isn't needed.....I have blocked tubes due to scar tissue and there is no way to fix that....my RE won't do surgery because he says it's far to risky and it will only cause more problems in the long run....adhesions would just start to form again once he did the surgery....so HE said IVF is your only option....we don't have the $12,000 to spend on it and frankly don't want to go thru that grueling process...when u aren't guaranteed to conceive on the first try....
I wish we could afford it...but we can't....it's just something we aren't able to do....we are hoping and praying we conceive naturally :)
Best wishes to those of you that are on similar journeys.....its not an easy road, it's expensive, frustrated, heartbreaking and emotionally draining

Don't lose hope. The doctors told my husband and I that we would never have children. After twelve years of marriage, I gave birth to a beautiful baby girl who is now 25 years old and married. Trust in God, He is all powerful!!!!!

Nope, sorry. But I suggest getting some as much exercise in the bedroom as possible on the off-chance you kill two birds with one stone and save yourself a butt-load of money.

Good luck. :)

Thank you so much for the messages!! I'm going to reply to everyone's comments quickly.

I know that it will benefit my baby and myself if I'm at a healthy weight when I fall pregnant, so I am motivated to give our IVF baby the best possible chance. Health all the way!

I have increased my fruit and veg intake a lot and have cut way way back on starches and carbs. It's very early days, but it seems to be working. I'm also eating regularly, meals and snacks. That always works for me and helps keep my metabolism burning all day long.

I used to have a personal trainer years ago and I learnt so much from him. I can't afford to hire one again now unfortunately, but I do use his lessons and I know a lot about how to train. Our fertility doc has referred us to another doctor who specialises in helping fertility challenged women lose weight fast before IVF. We are seeing her on 26 July. Apparently there are daily / weekly injections involved, but from what I've heard it's VERY successful. We don't know how much it COSTS though..... That will determine if we can afford to go this route or whether I have to battle it out without meds.

My husband is very much on board with the health and fitness plan. He has set himself a goal of losing 20lbs, since he knows that a healthier man means healthier sperm and a better chance of a successful IVF. He also wants to support me, so he eats what I eat and works out with me. He is wonderful and I am very lucky to have him with me during this challenging time.

I am 100% focussed on losing this weight and have put the actual IVF treatment / process in the back of my mind for now. I'm taking the weight loss one day at a time. As long as I eat right and exercise TODAY, that's all that counts. And tomorrow, I do it again. I WANT to be healthy for my baby and I WANT a successful IVF treatment FIRST TIME. So I'll do whatever I can to get there.

I have PCOS and know my best chance for getting pregnant is losing weight too. I've done 5 rounds of clomid and been trying for 19 months. Even though I want nothing more than a baby, it's still hard to use that as motivation. Because then if I fail, I'm also failing my future babies. :( It's been hard, but I've tried to separate the two goals in my mind (getting pregnant and losing weight) and just focus on one at a time. Best of luck to you!

SparkPeople has a sister site for exactly this type of support-- health and fitness before and during pregnancy.

Also, the father's health matters, too. Many male fertility issues are linked to obesity. If he's obese (and particularly if he's extremely obese), he should be losing weight right along with you, and even if he isn't obese, he should be following a healthy diet and exercise routine. If your doctors haven't talked about this, you might want to keep looking to see if you can find someone who really thinks of it as a *couple's* issue.

Would you maybe consider hiring a nutritionist and a personal trainer to set up a program for you? That is what my best friend (who is like my sister) is doing. She didn't lose the weight the first time they did IVF, and while two embryos were transferred successfully, they both ended up ectopic and they had to terminate. They can only afford to try one more time, so she's hiring the trainer and the nutritionist to help her both figure out a plan, and to keep her accountable. She's older than you, 41, so your chances are much better than hers are. She is also doing acupuncture treatments as recommended by her doctor.

And, I know it's hard to do, but you just have to stay positive. She's been amazing throughout all of this about staying positive... heck I have a harder time with it than she does! I would also see if there's any local IVF support groups, so you can bond with some women in your area who have been there. My friend has one and said it's been a huge help for her.

Good luck!

I've never been in your situation but I would suggest you focus on your desire to have a healthy child as the motivation to help you cope with the stress and commitment you are going to need during this time. Perhaps consider aiming for 6 veggie servings a day with fruit as your sweet and cut way back on starch carbs as much as possible. It isn't just a matter of losing weight...it's a matter of being at your best optimal health.

best wishes to you both

I was told on Friday 21 June 2013 that the best chance my husband and I have of having a baby of our own, is IVF. I'm 35 and he has poor quality sperm, so the doctor said that any other treatments would just be a waste of my time and our money. It was really awful to hear, but we've made peace with it and now have to work towards IVF and a baby as our ultimate goal.

However, I have to lose 40lbs before the doctor will even DO the IVF procedure, since he wants me to be as healthy as possible before we try to fal pregnant. I have to do this by end 2013, so the pressure's really on.

I was wondering whether any other ladies have had to do deadline-based weight loss for IVF? Any advice on how to cope with the pressure and worry of failure? What was your most successful strategy towards success? AND how many times did you try IVF before you were pregnant? We can only afford to do it ONCE, even with financial assistance from my in-laws!
