I couldn't give diddly about Paula Deen and whether everyone accepts her apologies or not. I"ve watched many of her shows...not because I would cook the way she does...it's much too sweet and buttery...but she has always been very entertaining.

The thing that bothers me is that if you had been the subject/object of mean and/or cruel words in your childhood, don't you think that the hurt would stay with you all your life? It's called bullying!! And that leaves emotional marks, just as if they were thrown at you like rocks.

This has all blown out of hand. How many times have you said something that you really didn't mean....... how many times do celeberities say things they didn't mean....... And I'm sure the people that made the decision to drop her have made bad comment choices too...This happens all the time. I think companies are afraid of being badly looked upon if they don't drop their endorsements because of negitive press lately. Reality is - EVERYONE SAYS SOMETHING STUPID at least once. She's still a good person and provides good services, so focus on the positive and learn from her's and other's mistakes and move on.

She made a mistake. My resentment is at the double standard. Why are women taken to task more then men? Why is it okay for CDs to have the n word in multiple songs and still be sold at Walmart, Kmart, Target etc.? Why can Alex Baldwin make homophobic remarks and not lose any business deals? I was never a big fan of hers ... recipes were too unhealthy and her TV style just did not appeal to me. That being said ... I resent the way the media has done such a hatchet job on her. Let's see rap artist lose some money over the n word in their music. Let's see them have stores refuse to sell their CDs. Oh, and before anyone starts screaming racist ... my family is racially diverse. So, before we stone Paula to death why not hold everyone to the same standard? I am fed up with the whole slavery arguement as an excuse for racist behavior displayed by minorities against whites excused away.

Give Paula Deen a break, accept her apology, move on ... or start holding everyone to the same standard being applied to her.

I don't think she is losing contracts for a word she said over 20 years ago but for other things in her deposition she said which was ignorant to say for a public figure. Companies she aligned with can't support someone who is constantly putting their foot in their mouth. I would have dropped her as well. If someone is giving you a million dollar contract they want you a little sharper.

When she said all jokes seem to be about blacks, Jews and rednecks, that shows me she hangs out with prejudice people because she is prejudice. She's made 60 million last year. I think she'll be O.K.

I know she said something completely wrong and rude! We all mess up at some time. The woman has apologized but that doesn't seem enough for some people. I bet most of us have done or said worse but we aren't in the public eye so the world doesn't get to see it.

You NEVER regret a workout!

They way that she is being treated for something she said over 20 years ago is crazy. I agree, we all have said or done things we sincerely regret. I guess there is no forgiveness in our society. You would think she had gone on live television and drown some puppies the way things are going for her. Maybe I don't know the whole story.

Is it wrong to fight time, to turn it back or push it forward? Time was never mine.

The stuff that is being reported about what Paula Deen said is from *her* deposition taken *under oath*--she was bound by law to tell the truth in this statement. So while it may or may not be a frivolous lawsuit, the statements that are ruining Paula Deen's career are her own. There's no 'allegedly' about it.

Here's her full deposition: www.cnn.com/interactive/2013/06/entertainm
ent/deen-deposition/
Read for yourself. The interesting bits start at about pg. 20.

The hypocrisy and double-standards in this country are completely out of control. Paul Deen gets vilified for something she said 30 years ago but yet Alec Baldwin can go on a rant on Twitter over something some reporter/blogger said; he can call this person all sorts of gay slurs and he gets a pass. And we all know it's not the first time he's done something like that. I choose to protest Alec Baldwin with my checkbook in that I will never ever apply for a Capitol One credit card, never watch his TV program or any movie he makes, nor will I ever buy anything else he's ever paid to peddle.

I know what the allegations are in the lawsuit in which Paul Deen was deposed, but that's all they are - allegations. The lawsuit is obviously still in the discovery phase; there's been no trial; there's been no verdict. For all we know this is a frivolous lawsuit by someone looking to cash in on Paula Deen and her company - it's happened before and it will happen again. But, to ruin a person's career and life over something that may or may not have happened and over something that was said decades ago - sorry, it's just not right, especially when many, many other people are given a pass for using the exact same word and the only difference is the color of their skin. Hypocrisy and double standard is all I can say!

Ask Michael Vick, Tiger Woods, those who apologized and still, got dropped! When you're in the media, you all set an example and have a following. Some people, no matter what they do, it's okay! She has a history of this. They know and are groomed, that everyone is listening! I can say it and it won't mean anything, let a famous personality say it, and it's like, unforgivable. It'll blow over and she'll make a come back! They all do! emoticon

Tempest in a teapot. Yes, it was wrong. Yes, she apologized. As someone else pointed out, most rapper lyrics are far worse than the language she used (INCLUDING the "n" word!); it seems very hypocritical to allow one group of people to use that word and another group is not allowed.

Do I use racial epithets? No. Am I prejudiced? To be honest, probably, but I try to live beyond it and rise above it. There are CHARACTER TYPES that bother me far worse than racial or ethnic types. What's inside counts far more than what's on the outside.

Actually, I'm a little surprised; my teenage children read some news reports and some fictional stories that were popular when I was a teenager. I had to explain some ethnic slurs to them: "Wop", "Dago", "Kike", "Kraut", "Frog", "Honky", "Spic", and "Mick" were among them. The "n" word wasn't the only one used back then, and isn't the only word that is still around. It would be wonderful if the only place these words are found are in old dictionaries. I was actually happy that my children did NOT know those words.

I think racism is very wrong, however, the attempt to "make an example" out of Paula Deen for something that happened 30 years ago is ridiculous and pathetic.

Paula I am praying for you. Looks like there are a lot of people who hide behind big company policies while covering up their own little lies about using the N word. It hasn't been that long sense a whole generation used that word. Back then it was the term used. I don't agree with using any word to hurt anyone, but get real. Paula did not kill someone. It was 30 years ago! Really! It is used in rap music every day and in movies, etc. But......that's ok?! I am SOOOOOOOO sick of the race card being used when it benefits only ONE race. When we all except each other as equals and stop using race as a way to control everything from who can use certain words and who can not. When we realize that NO one has the right to control our right to FREEDOM of speech. We may not like certain words, but it does not give us the right to take from the English language or history or decide who can or can not use it. I say get real and focus on building up instead of destroying. We are all human beings and we must learn to love each other no matter our difference, race, etc.

I have made many, many mistakes in my life.....but "if you choose the behavior, you choose the consequence." The consequence might not seem "fair" and "everyone else" may also be offenders, but never the less, I have owned my mistakes and been ready to own the consequences and not point fingers. Then, I cleaned up my act, cleaned my own side of the street, and moved on to better living. I'm all the better for learning and growing and not blaming others or feeling like a victim.

I hope Paula stops talking, takes personal and private inventory, and then moves on to better living.

I try to hold fast to the truth that a full and thankful heart cannot entertain great conceits. When brimming with gratitude, one's heartbeat must surely result in outgoing love, the finest emotion that we can ever know. AS BILL SEES IT

I feel bad for her I just hope with this huge loss of companies pulling out from her she doesn't do something drastic, I mean when someone loses as much as she has they could jump a bridge and I'd hate to see that happen to her.
She's always upbeat and fun, I don't condone her use of words but we all make mistakes I think they've taken this waaaaaaaaaaaaaay to far. I agree with the one writer who said Walmart and Target sell music that says worse demeaning content towards women and also the N word and they think nothing of selling those cd's, a lot of the music is violent, but I don't see them not selling them.....
It doesn't matter if you like the woman or not this is really so unfair!

@ 2bdynamic I don't live in a glass house so I can't cast a stone at her maybe you can, but I know I've made mistakes in my life so I can't judge her. She made a mistake that doesn't mean that she should lose her whole lively hood for it.
I think they are making a huge circus out of this, what she said was wrong she apologized and as good Catholics or whatever your religion maybe we should accept her apology and move on.
I know I have said the word, because growing up we didn't have many African Americans living in my town and I was walking home with a boy that was African American and an old man in the neighborhood called him that name, I didn't know what it meant but I could see the boy was upset. I went home and asked my parents what a N...... was and they told me.
So have I said the word yes as a child not knowing what it was and another time when we were watching a show with my son who was small at the time and he asked what it was and I explained to him that is a very disrespectful thing to say.
We've all sinned in some way shape or form in our lifetime, we've all made mistakes it's apart of life it's also a part of life to forgive!
Maybe Alec Baldwin should get punished for the homophobic rant he went on the other day, maybe he should lose sponsors and be taught a lesson. Maybe the gay and lesbian community should be in an uproar over what he said , I have a few gay friends and its tough enough for them to be accepted, thank god things are changing and they are getting the rights they deserve to love who they want and be able to get married.
I think he's more of a menace then Paula Deen......

We've all said and done things we're "ashamed" of or wish we could take back. If any of us says differently, we are in denial. I say accept her apology and move on, perhaps our country could heal if we did just that. We're all picking scabs off of old wounds and they can never heal when that is done.

First I agree, the N word needs to be dead and buried! Never used again...
However, I do not think Paula Dean should have her career ended over a mistake! We
All have made mistakes and said things we regret and it matters how she treats people...
And many people, both black and White, have voiced her non racist behaviour, kindness and
True friendship! I also question this treatment because she is a woman! Men have done many "a thing" and managed just fine! I hope they leave her alone and move on...

When I first heard the story, I thought "she's a 60 something woman from the south. Is anyone surprised by her use of a racial slur?" However this controversy started over her response to a deposition question in a case involving a former manager of one of her restaurants. For me, that changes it to some degree because no employee should have to tolerate hearing derogatory language of a racial/sexual nature in the work place. She has varied her response as to how many times she has used the word in question. I do not believe that she used the word only once as she has said on more than one occasion. That simply doesn't make sense. Her tearful apologies have not seemed heartfelt either. They seemed staged for the camera, her fans and her sponsors. That said, I think this is an opportunity for her to learn a very valuable lesson about not using how you are raised and the culture and time period you are raised in as an excuse. This is the 21st century and NO ONE should be planning a plantation style wedding complete with a wait staff dressed as slaves. I found that far more offensive than any word. I'm sure she will come out on the other side (think Martha Stewart), but it will take time and this is probably a great opportunity for her to take her restaurants and cookbooks in a healthier direction to showcase her own lifestyle changes since finding out she had Type 2 diabetes.

To the person who posted before me especially ........FENWAYGIRL
I find it ODD to say the least you bring up the matter about "we all have sinned' yada yada and then casually throw out there .......... "We have all probably used the N' word at some time! ............ Excuse me But I will say for myself: I NEVER ................ AND I MEAN NEVER have used that horrible word and to try to excuse her "Plantation wedding" which clearly was an attempt to bring back the days of SLAVERY which were long ago abolished !! Since you want to throw info about re: "Forgiveness" then I will toss it back ............ Jesus said,
"You will know a man by his fruits." ................... I think I can clearly see Paula deens fruit bowl and I do not wish to partake ................. But then like I said before, "I never WAS a fan of hers ............. so there is nothing for ME to forgive .............. I eat healthy food, not sugar and fat!!

Everyone on the face of this earth has sinned there are no saints here, I think she's been unfairly judged. I think it would be hard to find people who haven't said the word being her age, I give her credit for saying that she said it.
What kills me is you hear rappers saying this word you hear communities of African Americans saying this to one another as a sign of saying hello all the time, but some lady from the south says it and they want to ruin everything she's ever done. There shouldn't be a double standard here, the word is bad it shouldn't be said by anyone, but we do live in America last I checked and we do have freedom of speech.
I don't condone her saying the word, but I think enough is enough already let it go, she didn't kill anyone.
What bothers me is people like Aaron Hernandez (sports star) thinking he can get away with his actions because he's a sports hero or Lindsey Lohan, Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie making a mochary of our justice system with DUI's and drug charges and getting rehab time after time or going to jail for 18 minutes because there is no room in the jails!
If there is no room in a jail in California then send them to the nearest state that does have room and send them there for a few months like every other citizen would get if charged with the things they've done.
I don't go for this special treatment of movie stars and sports stars that bothers me more then what Paula did. People love to judge others they should look in their own 4 walls to see how holy they are and then let them cast a stone.

Starting to like the new me!

You know, this is so not-funny funny. Yesterday, I was at my neighbor's house borrowing a cup of fertilizer (no, seriously. This is the neighborhood I live in!) when my neighbor, an elderly lady I've known my entire life, casually dropped the N-word into our conversation.

It literally didn't even blink on her radar. It was just her way of describing a black man to me.

I excused myself from the conversation.

That's really not the norm down here anymore. People like that are part of a dying era of prejudice and racism.

The problems Ms. Deen is having right now really have nothing to do with all the hoopla about what she said or didn't say years ago. It is all about business, contracts, and her business associates and the ups and downs of being a celebrity and allegations having to do with the business. It isn't really about her personally, just the cost of doing business. Celebrities have good years and bad years, whether deserved or not. It'll all die down and life and business go on.

I've always liked Paula Deen and here southern style of cooking. She has taken many hits from various food snobs and elitists over the years who believe that southern cuisine is horrible and that all Southerners are uneducated rednecks. Yet she has endured.

This latest controversy is just not fair to Ms. Deen. We have all thought or made inappropriate comments about others over the years. Does that make us bad people? I don't think so...it makes us human. Simple as that. Society today places too much emphasis upon a person's every little comments -- past or present -- and then seeks to embarrass them or call them out on things said or done in the past.

I will always like Paula Deen's charm, her style, and her southern cooking. I hope that she pulls through this public bashing of her...and will continue to thrill us with her southern cooking and warm, country charm. emoticon

I read the deposition. It sounds like the allegations of sexual harrassment are aimed at her brother. She wasn't aware of anything inappropriate going on. Remember at this point they are allegations that haven't been proven true at this point. They're allegations.

I think Food Network has been looking for a way to get rid of her since her diabetes diagnosis. She apologised for her language so people who are always preaching forgiveness should practice what they preach. I was happy to see the chefs on The Chew stick up for her yesterday on their show. These are people who know her personally.

I've never liked Paula Deen, but I think she's gotten the short end of the stick. She is from an era, and a part of America, where the N word was in common usage. If she was a person of colour, people wouldn't look at her twice — they'd presume she was reliving the old days, and ignore her use of the word (can you imagine telling a little old African American granny she couldn't use that word?). People forget that as horrible as slavery was for a lot of people, there were "good folk" as well. Often, slaves were looked on as members of the family — not free, but well taken care of. Northerners can't really grasp this concept — the horror of not having the "freedom" to struggle to work to feed and clothe yourself outweighs the thought that doing your part meant that there would always be a meal and a roof over your head and people caring what happened to you.

I don't think Paula is racist. I think she cares a lot for dark-skinned folk. I think she uses the words she knows from childhood and has a matter of fact way of describing things like skin colour which has, unfortunately, gotten her the label of "racist." I refer to myself as white as a ghost often, and I don't mind when others do. Occasionally I wish I could tan and not turn lobster-red instead. "As black as this board here" isn't a nice way of phrasing things, but it's pretty honest. Paula's insensitive to those who still feel pain from the N word (it's incredible how much power words hold), but all she actually did was tell the truth to a court of law. To be skewered for that is much worse than using the wrong terminology in private conversation.

The precedent is horrible. People may lie in a court of law to protect themselves and their reputations. To keep their jobs.

I really think a lot of this has come from TMZ. That show has entirely too much influence these days — and the hosts aren't as level-headed and fair as they think they are. They give their opinions just as anyone else does, but more people are watching, and they have more people who are willing to agree with what they say. When companies are afraid of losing business because they are associated with something that the population at large (their customer base) will shy away from, it's hard to say "We just reported the facts." When you have influence, you have to think about the repercussions of what you report.

I have to say that I have never met a "perfect person" yet, so it makes sense to cut others some slack since I definitely know I have made mistakes in my own life, seriously people should let it go especially if it was something that was said thirty years ago. I am definitely not the same woman I was thirty years ago.

It's not just what she said 30 years ago -- though 30 years ago, it was well-established that the N word was not something to be used. The bigger problem is the stuff she has been saying over the past week.

She is presenting herself as a stupid old woman who doesn't know right from wrong -- and that is even more damaging to her career as anything she said 30 years ago. Companies handling millions of dollars accountable to shareholders can't afford to take a gamble on anyone who behaves the way she has the past few days -- totally out of control and not responding appropriately to this situation. She seems to be a woman who is not very bright whose fame has way exceeded her mental abilities.

For example: her apologies have not been totally coherent. Did you see the U-tubes? Have you read the transcipt of this morning's interview on the Today show? This morning with Matt Lauer, she said she didn't know for sure that it was wrong to use the N word because she has heard it used by black people themselves. Even this morning she didn't know it was wrong?

She seemed on medication this morning -- and/or falling apart. Companies just can't take that risk with their shareholders' money.

Many people say things that are part of their growing up years. In my house, we were taught never to use the derogatory term she has used in the past, but I knew many Southerners who thought it was o.k. Because it was common in their household. I don't condone that behavior, but I can't see pulling up something from the past to ruin someone.

I just hope that no one goes back thirty years ago and holds me accountable for something I said. I had no filter back then and just said whatever popped into my little head. Although I know I never used the N word. As bad as the C word to describe a woman.

It is just the latest "scandal" to talk about.

I used to watch, not only Paula Deen, but also the Food Network on a regular basis. I think she did more damage to her "brand" when she did not admit she had diabetes than anything she admitted to saying or using more than 20 years ago.

I now watch the Cooking Channel. Yes, it is the sister channel to the Food Network, but the people I view as not as arrogant as those on the Food Network (no not just Paula herself).

All that being said, I think it is sad that the only time the word racism comes up, it is portrayed as ONLY white to black. It is the same no matter who it is from or toward. No, there is no "reverse" anything. It is forward either way.

Where to begin..I am very ambivalent about the whole Paula Deen thing. I hate what she said but at the same time I hate the way the media /press seems always to build you up to knock you down. I know Paula put her own foot in it, with what she said, lo those many years ago. But I also I remember that Jesus said "He who is without sin cast the first stone.

Who among us can go back 20 to 30 years and say we didn't make mistakes..Maybe not her mistakes.. but others.

Political correctness has run amouk, my friends, with the language police everywhere these days and can destroy people lives quickly.

That being said, what was done to blacks in this country is a dog gone shame. I feel for those that had to live thru it. It is a stain on our countries' history.

I lived in Louisiana for a year in 1963. What a culture shock for a 12 year old. I saw the signs and I didn't understand why they said " white only".and "coloreds to the rear".It made me very sad and my still small voice inside, cried out WHY? WHY? WHY? I was originally from W.Virginia , but had a good Mother that taught her children, that all people are just people, no matter the color of their skin. Like Martin Luther King said,.it really is content of character, that matters. It's just a simple, small outer difference, like eye color.. I still at 62 wonder WHY.... WHY ... WHY???

As a black southern woman, born during the age of Jim Crow, I understand, and can in no way, despise, or resent Paula Dean. I am sorry that a woman of her hard work, and eventual fame, could not grow beyond the chains of her own heritage. In the words of any good southern woman I say: " She didn't know any better, bless her heart." This may not seem like enough. But I come from a world that sent blacks to the back entrance usually with no eat-in option in restaurants, and a sign on a grocery store in the early 70's posted in the window of a local grocery store that stated: "Bag boy wanted; Colored need not apply."

I am against racial slurs, taunts, and invectives. I do understand ignorance.
I feel that Paula Deen has done more damage with her butter, mayo, and cream cheese laden recipes than she has done with her culturally derived racism.
I suspect there is good in her.
I wish her well.

It definitely seems like we don't know the whole story. Saying the word 20 years ago could be forgiven, but if there's been a pattern of racist/abusive behavior in the workplace, that's different.

One aspect of this that I find very interesting is where people say she needed to go because her food is so unhealthy. If you watch Food Network at all, you know she isn't the only one who cooks like that, and I don't hear an outcry to fire those celebrity cooks. Those shows stay on the air as long as there's an audience watching (or the star quits or gets fired...). Just sayin'.

Wow I really liked her show and her personality from what I could tell from the television. But to those who say we need to hear both sides first, she already admitted to saying a racist hurtful comment and asking her employees to do something that would further stereotype them as the N word. Nothing to defend let her and her lawyers defend such behaviour, if someone says such things out their mouths they mean it. I live in the North and I've been to the South and that behaviour exist in both places sadly now and in my grandparents day. People should really watch what they say, I would never call someone something like that or equal to it because I know the sting of ignorance and non education behind making statements like that and what it can do to people if you don't potentially know your self worth as a human being. And it's not ok to be dismissive of such behaviour, no it's not murder but it's degrading and disrespectful to a whole segment of the population and contrary to popular belief not all blacks run around saying the N word themselves so it doesn't make it ok. I bet if I said something like that or similar at my job I would be fired so quick or bought up on actions so she shouldn't be treated any different. emoticon
