Yes. 3 yrs ago my cholesterol was significantly above normal. Since I have lost 40 lbs and now actively involved in a regular exercise program, it is now at a normal level. Yes, I do watch my cholesterol intake, that along with a lot of other nutrients on the nutrition tracker daily.

No. Dietary cholesterol is not proven to lead to high levels of blood serum cholesterol. There's a much stronger correlation between eating foods that are high in processed fats (vegetable oils) and simple carbohydrates (think: donuts, Oreos, etc.) and high blood serum cholesterol.

I never was too concerned with it, but having lost over 30 pounds, it's gone way down on its' own, which it wasn't doing on statins alone.

My good cholesterol was always extremely high which led my total numbers to be over 200. My doctor put me on statins and my good cholesterol dropped significantly, plus I started getting severe muscle pains. I was a heavy protein/egg eater and exerciser. Now I try to watch my intake of fats and cholesterol but have weaned myself off the statins.

High cholesterol is hereditary, dietary and also an age thing. It creeps up on you.

Absolutely not!

I eat a real food diet high in vegetables and fats, especially saturated fats and lower in carbohydrates. I am in excellent health and my blood work is great.

Well... yes and no. I'm concerned, but only because they're too low. For my age and gender, my TChol should be in the 200s. Mine is below that (around 150-ish). Not critically low, but lower than I'd prefer to see it. More CVD has been associated with *low* cholesterol values than with high ones.

I know you're talking about your dietary/nutrition RDAs, but if you're truly concerned, you need to request a panel from your doctor. Ingested cholesterol is only the first step in what affects your health; and that hasn't been shown to necessarily raise your blood cholesterol.

Research it. And take those valid concerns to your healthcare professionals! Some will order labs drawn if you request it over the phone, even. It's worth the attempt, if only to set your mind at ease.

they've forgotten we're really just animals ...

Quick question for all of you regarding cholesterol. I receive my bloodwork back and my doctor is trying to put me on a statin. My results were:

Total 225
HDL 80
LDL 125 (She states the new goal is less than 100 although my paperwork said 130 and she crossed it out?)
Trig 86
Chol/HDL Ratio 2.8

I tried to explain to her how high my GOOD cholesterol was, if it wasn't that good it would not push me over 200. She didn't even discuss the ratio etc.

The only fat I try to eat is Nut butter (homemade) coconut oil and avocado. I do cardio 5-6 days/week.

Any thoughts or tips to get the LDL down?

Thanks

Personally, no. My blood work is always flawless and I eat healthy and exercise enough that it shouldn't be an issue.

I took a peak at your nutrition tracker and noticed you eat eggs/egg whites often. Every time I eat an egg/egg whites mine goes over too. I don't worry about it because it's dietary cholesterol. I already know when I don't have eggs (or shrimp) my cholesterol is well within the recommended guidelines. Since eggs are a dietary cholesterol, it doesn't worry me.

Cholesterol is like the flip side of fiber. Context matters.

For a long time, we thought fiber was absolutely key to preventing a bunch of different cancers (even breast cancer) and heart disease and maybe even Alzheimer's. Then they discovered that people who took fiber supplements but got very little from their food weren't healthier than those who got slightly more from food but didn't take supplements. Just having fiber wasn't important; getting fiber from food is what matters. Since then, they have started finding all sorts of compounds in grains, vegetables, and beans and other high-fiber foods that are protective. For example, phytic acid helps the body remove heavy metals that can lead to cancer. There's a lot of phytic acid in whole wheat and beans and things like that, and there's little to no phytic acid in Metamucil. It's not fiber that's healthy; it's high-fiber foods.

And with cholesterol, it's not cholesterol that's harmful; it's some high-cholesterol foods. Most foods with lots of cholesterol also have lots of saturated fats or even trans-fat, and some high-cholesterol foods have lots of sugar. Cholesterol and sat-fat tend to be high in processed foods, too, which have empty calories and may even have actively harmful compounds. (Processed meats are looking like they're especially damaging.) Plus, people who eat a lot of cholesterol tend NOT to eat as much fiber or get as many vitamins. Most high-cholesterol foods are high in calories, so they leave less room for other healthy foods.

So rather than just looking at your cholesterol, look where the cholesterol is coming from and whether you're getting *enough* of the healthy things. If you went over your cholesterol because you had an egg-oatmeal-fruit pancake for breakfast and a hardboiled egg with your spinach, bell pepper, and salmon salad for dinner, I wouldn't worry. If you went over your cholesterol because you had a bacon, egg, and cheese biscuit for breakfast and a half-pound cheeseburger with fries cooked in beef tallow for dinner, you've probably got a problem.

High cholesterol and Heart issues run in my mother's family....and mine was trending higher and higher a few years ago, despite diet and exercise. Discussions with my Doc, and decided to go on a low dose of meds. Its worked! My diet is not overly high in cholesterol, but I do track it consistently. Why bother with the meds if I don't?!! I certainly don't consider the meds a "Free Pass" to eat whatever, not exercise, and gain weight!! I'm afraid many folks have that mentality.....

My doctor says my cholesterol is "disgustingly heathy," so I don't worry about dietary cholesterol too much.

Not really. Seems most of the stuff I eat doesn't contain cholesterol so it must be coming from somewhere else.

No, it is my opinion based on research that dietary cholesterol is not a major factor in having high cholesterol in the body. Other factors play more of a part. Anyhow, I don't have a problem with cholesterol.

No as I have always watched my numbers.....I find the sodium intake my number one concern, so I am always working on keeping it under 1500 mg per day.

no. my cholesterol level is well under 100 but that doesn't mean I would sit down and eat a dozen eggs. Just use common sense.

Not really, I track it but am more concerned about Saturated fats and sodium. With my diet Cholesterol is only an issue when I stray off it.

Not really. I rarely eat red meat and usually eat lean meats like fish and poultry. My cholesterol is currently a little high but I know it directly correlates to my weight, which is a bit too much right now. I finally got a doctor to listen to this after seeing two others who didn't bother to listen. Now to just find time to get an appointment with the endocronologist she recommended!

My cholesterol issues are the number of eggs I eat and the fact that I should be more active. Eating healthy and watching the types of fats I eat have now become a part of my lifestyle

You should have some cholesterol in your diet. I track mine in the food tracker and usually stay within range.

We thought about it way back in the 1980's, but not anymore, it ain't as bad as thought, and the companies that make the meds for it are mad, because people are stopping buying them and doctors are not prescribing them as much, unless the drug company is paying the doctor off, that is.

Plan for tomorrow, but enjoy the heck out of today.

No. I had high cholesterol at one point (just outta college), and I realized the best thing for cholesterol is exercise. There are some foods you should try to eat as well (oatmeal etc.), and some to avoid (anything high-fat, try to cut back on meats, less cake/candies/sugary stuff), but mine has been normal since then. Hopefully, I will never have to take pills, but definitely if you're eating well and exercising regularly, you're doing the best things you can to help keep it low. The actual "cholesterol" on the package isn't normally what translates into cholesterol in your body.

Cholesterol has not been a problem for me in the past. I think I actually did track cholesterol for a while but felt like I was starting to get overzealous about tracking my food.

I'm trying to be balanced in my eating but think that I will probably not track cholesterol. I'm working on getting more of my protein from plant sources and trying to eat leaner cuts of meat. I'm hoping that this will continue to keep my cholesterol in a good range.

If I ever have a reading that creates a cause for concern, I'll definitely start being more vigilant about my cholesterol intake.

Maybe i 'should' pay more attention to cholesterol than i do - but i basically pay no attention to it at all, whatsoever. i watch my fat grams and I eat a varied, healthy diet... so long as my doctor continues to be satisfied with my bloodwork (always comes in within 'normal' ranges) I don't think I'll be adding it to my list of things to monitor closely.

Goal 1 - break 200 (46 pounds lost)**DONE**
Goal 2 - leave obesity behind (BMI 29.9, at 185#) **DONE**
Goal 3 - BMI = Normal (154# or less)

I get my blood drawn annually and all of my numbers are always perfect. I'm tracing my food however, and my cholesterol is always a minimum of twice the RDA by Spark, sometimes even triple or quadruple. I've read recently that dietary cholesterol isn't an issue, but it's still kind of freaking me out seeing the numbers so much higher than what is recommended.

You'll never regret the workout you do, only the one you don't.
