There was lots of the very thick, strained yogurt where I lived in the Balkans for a few years ... it's probably one of those things (like Burek, Turkish coffee etc) that's all over the former Ottoman empire area - which of course includes Greece.

A yogurt empire! Thanks for the link, Karen! It's my favorite yogurt...just the 0%, unflavored kind. Sooo rich!

Thank you so much for posting this blog & for the link to the story. I find it amazing!!! When I was in Israel they always served in restaurants yogurt in large pitchers at every meal, it was so good you good drink it is very good & creamy. Judy
I remember reading about this man a while ago. Chobani isn't available where I live (Greece) but we have dozens of yogurt brands here. Interestingly, in Turkey they drink aryan (sp?) which is a liquid yogurt like kefir, but a little different, so honestly, I would have expected him to make aryan and turn that into his empire :) Good for him for finding a niche! If you can find aryan, try it, it's really good and very refreshing in the summer.

Good for him! I wish I had just a fraction of that motivation! I'm in Canada too, but had some Chobani last time I visited the US. I must say it was quite yummy. I'm so relieved that yogurt is healthy!

Thanks for sharing that - it was completely new to me.
yes, that's quite a story. timing is everything. At a point where the US was just being introduced to greek yogurt and most were unflavored, here came Chobani. and his family had expertise in that area. Good for him

We don't have Chobani in Canada but Americans here rave on and on about it! I really want to try it and see what all the fuss is about. Maybe I'll ask my mom to pick some up next time she hits the grocery store across the border.

I can bench Nicole Richie, eat more than she does in a day before noon, I have a good 20 lbs on her but could still wear her pants.

Have you ever wondered about Chobani yogurt ? I know many of us are fans. I know I am. Did you know it's not Greek, but a Turkish recipe ? Read more about the Turkish immigrant who came to the US with $3,000 and recreated a yogurt empire. It's pretty cool !
