Yes, I don't drink alcohol because of the empty calories.

Not by itself, but I notice I tend to eat a bit more if I'm not careful. One glass of wine with dinner doesn't seem to hurt anything, but more than that and my willpower crumbles a bit. I definitely drink much less now than before I lost weight, in part because I am wary of that loss of control.

Starting Weight: 260 lbs. (November 2010)
Quasi-Maintenance: 165 lbs. (June 2011)
Goal Weight: 150 lbs. (reached December 8, 2011)

Size 22W to Size 4

Currently maintaining within 5 lbs. (+ or -) of goal. I weigh daily, but also use a tape measure and the fit of my clothes to guage how well I'm doing.

It definitely hinders mine! When I was younger, I didn't have a problem losing weight and drinking alcohol, but now one drink will throw my metabolism out of whack for days!

no not in weight gain or calorie type problems...but I get depression easily so the next day or two after a few drinks and I don't want to exercise so I stall.

WenWash;

"Conventional wisdom" notwithstanding,
the answer to your question is;
NO, it does NOT hinder - as long as you stick to having a drink as you described.

One a day (and no, you can't save up your 1/day to have 7 on Friday night, doesn't work that way).

There is reputable research showing that one glass of wine a day, in addition to having other benefits, will actually assist in weight maintenance.

"Facts" (and research) matter, CW is, 9 times out of 10, just plain wrong (but some can't let the facts get in the way of jumping on the bandwagon).

I drink, too - when it's in my range. No negative effects at all.

Some people can't stop after 1 or 2...they will drink 6 (or more) - which puts them over for sure.

For some people, depending on what they drink/amount - they can get bloated (retain water weight=increased scale numbers).

Some people have a drink or two, or three - and start pigging out=sabotage.

The best exercise in the world is to bend down and help someone up.

Does it hinder even if it's within your calorie range? It doesn't make me snack more because I don't over indulge but I'm just curious.

Yes, it sure can do that. It has to be in moderation for sure with me. If I drink wine before I go to bed, then I want to eat everything in site and I will too! So, I cannot lose weight if doing this too much, must be in moderation for me! emoticon Save it for a cheat day! emoticon

Yes. When I drink it seems that those are the days that I end up either at the high end of my calorie range, or over it. I love cocktails - I was a bartender back in college and had fun making all kinds of great tasting concoctions. So rather than how it makes me feel, it really is about taste. So although I can manage without it, I do miss some of that, as well as the social connection. I like both various beers - especially the dark stouts - and hard liquor; I'm not too crazy about wine although I live in wine country so that is often served at gatherings. emoticon or emoticon

Add to that my job can be quite stressful and sometimes after work or on Friday evening, I do really want to have something to relax with friends or co-workers away from the office. If I'm going to have one drink then I usually want another so I know for me, I'm better off just skipping it all together. For that many calories, I'd really rather have a mini meal. emoticon

The timing in which I saw this is telling - just this week I started of really well then found on a couple days I was over and both had some alcohol - hard cider on one day and an after dinner drink on another evening. Those extra calories are just enough to keep me in the maintain rather than losing weight range. DRAT! emoticon

Yes. When I decided I had to change the way I ate and start eating heatlhy and lose some weight I pretty much stopped drinking during the week and moderated it on the weekend. Now I still stay away from wine most days during the week although may have a glass or two with some dinners....just calls for it.
For me it's not only the extra empty calories from the wine, but if I over do it, I'll over eat too. Plus too much wine just isn't healthy for me or my heart and that is of prime concern to me. But boy! do I love a glass or two of wine. emoticon

I've been alcohol-free for 6 days and I've lost 2 pounds already. 5 more to go to get back to where I was. Tomorrow is "payday" when I'm always tempted to buy a bottle of wine or a six-pack of bottled beer. NOT GOING TO DRINK ! I want to keep losing weight - that is my main motivator. Pray for me ! (I'm going to pray for myself. lol )

I was alcohol-free for 107 days and lost 12 pounds in that time. Now for the past month, I drank quite a bit and regained 7 of those pounds. Going to be alcohol-free again until I re-lose those 7 pounds and a few more. Really want to get down into the 150's. emoticon

Nope, haven't had a drink since October 26, 1986.

"Rather train yourself for godliness; for while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come" (1Timothy4:7-8)

"Jesus answered, 'The most important [commandment] is, 'Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength'" (Mark 12:29-30).

I'm going to be alcohol-free until I reach my short-term goal of 159 pounds. I've been in 160 ville for too long. Even started creeping back up to 170 ! YIKES !

I don't snack when I'm drinking alcohol - it's just that alcoholic beverages have so many calories of their own. Alcohol has 7 calories per gram whereas carbs and proteins only have 4. Of course fats are even worse at 9 calories per gram. It's hard to track alcohol calories as beer and wine don't carry labels listing calories. But they certainly add up - as I can notice on my scale !

Oh, yes indeed it does. I have discovered that when I have an alcoholic drink, my snacking motor kicks in big time. It definitely makes me want to eat and that has been a problem. I let myself indulge on a Fri. and Sat. evening while watching a movie or having a nice dinner with my husband. I make sure that I keep up with my exercise routines.

I started drinking again this past month - not every day, but about 10 days out of the month - and I've re-gained 5 pounds ! I'm going to be alcohol-free again and I'll re-lose that weight. Alcohol and weight-gain really correlates with me. Other people find this to be true? I don't have a problem with over-eating. It's that beer or wine that gets me every time !
