I know this sound morbid, but hearing the news this morning that James Gandolfini died of a heart attack was motivation enough for me today. I am only a couple of years younger than he is and if I don't start now, it could be me. Sometimes fear is the best motivator. emoticon

First and foremost, I always plan my workout the day before. I include when I am going to workout and the type or types of workouts. I usually tell my fiance about it too so I have someone else to keep me accountable and push me out of bed for the morning workouts when the alarm goes off and I just want to snuggle.

Second, and perhaps the biggest motivator, is I remember how awful I felt when I was bigger. How awful I feel when I don't work out, and how strong and lean I feel when I am in my usual rhythm, even though I'm not necessarily lean.

My method: Don't allow myself to think about it. Have my workout clothing set out the night before. Roll out of bed and straight into my workout clothing before I have opened my eyes, and way before I've had the chance to think about what I'm about to do. Before I know it, I'm on the road, enjoying the fresh air (OK, OK, sucking down the fresh air).

A little hard work never hurt anyone. A little pain or hunger never hurt anyone. I am stronger than my desires.

I have had several knee arthritis flare-ups that incapacitated me. I am so thankful that I can walk, even with some knee pain, that it motivates me to walk. Thinking of all the things I missed because I could not walk very far and places I might miss if I give up really motivates me!

It's summer and I love the water. I joined Cal Fit so I can use their pool. The hour long swim classes are fun! I get outside after sitting in a cubicle all day and they play music while we run around in the pool. I feel spent afterwards and it's awesome. They have a sauna too so I can warm up if needed after. It's perfect.

To motivate myself, I think of how I get a break away from work, chaos, and the kids. I work out at the gym and they have child care so my 8 year old goes to child care while I get to work out.

Stopped negotiating with myself -- it's not if -- it's how long. Today I am adding 5 minutes extra for a friend going in for a painful test for cancer, and adding another 5 minutes for someone who was so encouraging to me this week on my Spark Page. That gives me a reason to have an extra hard push that day. Do it for others that you care about or inspire you! It works for me.

love that "No matter how slow you go, you're still lapping everyone on the couch." maybe barely but still .. makes me smile .. THANKS

But to answer the question...for me...sometimes have to go back to the start when I was happy with having done 10 minutes of walking or biking and not expect to do a 45 minute workout.

I repeat to myself the phrase: "No matter how slow you go, you're still lapping everyone on the couch." It doesn't matter what you do, just get up and move!! Take a few strolls around the mall or the park! And just remember that literally no matter WHAT it is, you are bettering yourself by doing it. I have recently gotten into jogging with this mindset (I have NEVER been any good at running). I started with combining walking and running 1 mile on the treadmill for 3 days a week, because even though it wasn’t much, I was at least doing something. After doing this for a few weeks, I upped the mileage very slowly to 1.3. I am now up to 1.5 miles, 5 days a week and am jogging the whole time instead of incorporating walking. I also have a 5k planned for the end of July and am looking forward to that! And to think that it all started with this one state of mind. Simply aim to make yourself a little bit better every day. Do something today that will make your progress slightly better than yesterday and you will be amazed with how far it will take you.

I track my food. If I track my food, I tend to eat within plan. Because otherwise, why bother? And if I'm tracking my food and eating well, I've made enough effort that I want results, darn it. So investing a little more time in working out seems like a great bargain!

Getting the workout scheduled into my daily habits has been a big help. Finding a gym to work out in that is not too crowded when I go is also HUGE. I will need to find non-gym stuff to do eventually, but for now I like stuff that gives me numbers (more motivation) and enjoying air conditioning and not having to put on more sunblock.

I get bored really easily at the gym so I only do about 10-15 minutes on each machine but I'll do 4/5 different machines in one session. That way I see it as 10-minute chunks of cardio with some strength training to break it up and the hour passes pretty quickly!
And it's always more fun when you have someone else to go with emoticon

I tell myself I will do just 15 minutes. I can do anything for 15 minutes. And I usually end up with 30 - 40 minutes with a burn at the end. The only times I was just at 15 minutes was when I was sick with a migraine. So I kind of trick myself into doing it but it works like a charm!

My motivation is just getting up and doing a 45min power walk with some good music, sometimes its hard, this morning a nice cool breeze coming in my window, I could of just grabbed my coffee and laid in bed, but I just thought about how good I feel when I do my walk. And how clear my mind feels, and how happy I get to work.

I do only the kinds of exercise I really like to do. Sometimes it intersects with what can manage my health better. Occasionally it does not. When you have circulatory problems, big-time, like I do ... it pays to find a cardio exercise you like to do... in my case, it had to be more frisky than walking the hills near home ... because, walking is what I REALLY like to do - but it just doesn't cut it ... so belly dance came next, then cardio belly dance came after that, then yoga and Masala Bhangra dance exercise were tied for next, after that, would be pilates core fusion type, in last place. But that last place is the last place of the absolute best!

I've always loved walking. It's been my method of meditating most of my life. And if I can walk out in the wild or where I can look at people's gardens or in any interesting surroundings, that makes it that much more enjoyable. I seldom have trouble motivating myself to walk outdoors. The other stuff is harder. I have to bribe myself. I can watch a TV show or listen to an audio book IF I do my strength training at the same time. Of course with the hatha yoga my arthritic joins tell me if I haven't been doing it often enough. Pain's a great motivator.

Lately, I find that I can tap into all kinds of emotions and use the momentum from them to get myself going... Anger and frustration are particularly effective--and lord knows I get enough of those at work to take home and burn off!! lol

Keep pressing play.
