I try to stay within the lower half of my range ... but go into the upper half of the range once or twice per week. Ocassionally (a couple of days per month), I will be either a little below or above the range.
My goal is to maintain a healthy way of eating for the rest of my life -- and for me, "healthy" means the ability to splurge ocassionally when the situation calls for it. A lifestyle of deprivation is not one I would stay on forever. Having a few "eating light days" balances things out and gives me a chance to contemplate on the fact that I don't NEED to eat a lot every day: those days also help me "re-set" my body and keep the carb cravings at bay.
So ... I mix it up. It's worked for me. I have gradually lost 50 pounds over a period of a few years living a lifestyle I can maintain for the rest of my life.
