It makes sense if the early arrival takes street parking (if there won't be any spots there later on). When you're both in the house you can switch spots and she can have the convenience of having the parking spot when she goes to leave in the morning.

I agree with SUMMERSHORTS....arrange some type of schedule and take turns. Maybe a week at a time. I grew up in NYC...sometimes I had to walk 5 blocks to find a spot and then have to move before 8am due to alternate side of the street parking. Life ain't easy

That's totally my instinct too, but like you said, I do have to live with her! Politeness and civility will rule the day.

Sounds like a plan...since you have to live with them! Knowing me I'd remind the one roommate of her use of the space last summer (but that is not perhaps the charitable thing to do!)

Time passes either way! I choose to look back one day and be happy I took charge of my mouth instead of looking in the mirror and wishing I had!

That's a really interesting idea! I'll have to bring it up to the other girls.

I want to have a roommate meeting to settle the parking thing and some other stuff that has been simmering.

use a rotating schedule :

Person A
Person B
Person C
Person D

Each get three days in a row using the parking spot, even days that they may not really need to. I wouldn't assign days of the week either, just start like today (Wed) Person A would have it today, tomorrow and Friday, person B would have it Saturday, Sunday, Monday Person C would Tue, Wed, Thurs Person D would have it Friday, Saturday, Sunday Person A gets it Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday etc....

Use a common calendar either on the refrigerator or use Google Calendar.

One week per roommate is an interesting idea. Though on the rest of the week when I am not the last one home, maybe I could "sell" the days to one of my other roommates?

The other thing too is that my team sports all end by mid July and after that I'll only want the spot one day a week. I should also mention that this particular roommate had night classes 3 days a week last summer so she had the spot for 3 days with no complaints from the rest of us.

I say it would be fair to take alternate weeks to who gets the spot, or offer to pay a little more rent to have it full time is a great option if they are up for it.

If there's a baseball game that night, I could be walking a 1/4 mile back to the house. I've had a similar schedule for most of the time I've lived in the house and have been perfectly willing to change around days that I stay out to suit the other roommates. I'm the only one who is out late on a regular schedule so I'm not sure how much good taking turns would do.

Unless this is a security issue, like mentioned in the previous response, I am not sure what the issue is. It seems a bit more fair to split the time evenly as was already suggested. If you are always the one who comes home late, it doesn't seem fair that you should always be the one to get the parking spot. Perhaps you could each park there for one week a month??

Parking can be an absolute nightmare! We spent 10 days in Lisbon in March/April and it was horrendous trying to find somewhere to park; I would not enjoy living there and having to do battle every day for a spot.

Perhaps taking it in turns to use the parking space might be a less contentious method? If a month/week is as evenly divided as possible, then everyone will get their fair share. Do you have to drive around looking for a spot if your allotted space is taken and how far would you have to then walk to get back to your house? I don't know what kind of safety issues you would face, coming home 9pm or later.

Background: I live in a house with 3 other young women and we have a 1 car parking spot plus on-street parking (which can get tight after rush hour). House rule when I moved in was that whoever was home last would get the spot.

I'm out late-ish 2-3 times a week because I do different sports activities that my roommates don't. I'll get home from those at 9pm or later. One of my roommates who gets home usually around 630 isn't happy with this and wants to use the spot more often. Also, I am almost always the first one up and out of the house in the morning. Any thoughts/solutions would be appreciated.
